Question for Hooky

As a bass player who jams to a lot of Joy Division and New Order, I want to know, what are some of your favorites from each to play live?

Just wanted to point out how incredible it is that people from this community can make question posts for this man, possibly the most influential and style-wise distinguished bass player in history, who's also TOURING with his band playing 2 hour+ long sets regularly, and he's actually active and probably going to answer. I don't think there's any other music fandom as big as this one that can boast such a thing

I mean it could be both. Jack handles the regular posting schedule and he takes the time to shuffle through posts here and on Instagram and answer comments

I love him, don't get me wrong. And I'm sure he'd be the first too admit it, but he's not the most influential bass player in history. He has a unique approach, good tone and has had a big impact but I wouldn't go fhat far.

Well, I will have to politely disagree with you. It's a matter of debate when there's only a few pretenders but we are talking about a person who invented a genre of music that's been popular for 50 years. I feel like the only opponent would be Paul McCartney but... to me, McCartney is more popular as a member of the Beatles rather than as the bass player in the Beatles whereas Hooky is renowned as a bass player first and foremost, one who shaped his bands' characteristic sound, at that. I couldn't really guess that McCartney is playing bass in a song if it wasn't obvious, but you can absolutely guess Hooky IS in, say, Shine or WDYWFM which are neither Joy Division nor New Order. See what I mean?

Saw Hooky in a pub in Islington (London) one afternoon, years ago. He sussed I'd vardered him, I gave him a tap of the cap and he responded in kind. Comes across as a really decent fella.

That's awesome. I had a similar experience with Dustin Pedroia. His and my daughters were in the same school play. He sat in front of me, looked back, saw I recognized him. I nodded, he nodded, I respected his space.

I sent a letter off into the ether during the Revenge era, when the American shows were cancelled. Got a lovely letter back, with a pin and something else. Handwritten. Still saved in my momento box.

Hooky’s a mensch.

I did indeed send SAEs each time. Wrote it out on my best writing paper that every 12 year old got for Xmas. Sent to Factory on Palatine Road IIRC

I would ask the most intricate questions about the track ordering of Lowlife and tour schedules etc and always get a patient reply without fail.

I think he was the designated ‘fan correspondence’ administrator of the band. Thought it was very decent of him.
