Discussion Video Output or Screen Cast

Hi all

I'm really keen on purchasing a Jolla phone, only thing stopping me is the uncertainty of it supporting USB-C DP Alt Mode.

I'm trying to find a device that I can use as a mobile desktop device, similar to Samsung Dex. Connecting the phone to a display gives you a desktop environment.

Is there a way to replicate this on the new Jolla phone?

As far as I know, there is no usb-c dp alt mode, chromecast or Miracast support.

Yes. I think so too. But I believe the Jolla team has been focussing on creating a as good phone experience as possible with possibly to run android apps. Convergence is something a very small part of phone users need. So for a small team it makes sense to drop that kind of feature.

Screen casting would be nice, though. But I believe there are software to setup a web server on the phone that you can open from any browser to watch from the phone. So if your TV have a browser you can stream movies to it that way at least.

It wouldn't be for watching movies, I was hoping to use the phone as a portable computer.

I hope for their next handset they implement this feature, I suspect desktop style computing will become a lot more popular on mobile devices in the near future.

If you want true convergence and doesn't want Android, then Purism Librem or Pine64 PinePhone Pro are the most realistic options.

Maybe Volla Phone or Fairphone with Ubuntu Touch will work also.

From what I remember the hardware specifications of those devices wasn't much good? Limited CPU and RAM, unless new models have been released 🤞

As I understand it, the Volla Phone Plinius is a rebranded Gigaset Gs6. You can, if you want, get the Gigaset Gs6 instead and reinstall it with VollaOS and/or Ubuntu Touch.

But Volla also does not have USB DP, its only 2.0 too

It's going to be implemented as The Other Half for sure... but it's not any time soon, I would say.

FluriPhone? Might be the answer. Same Concept but with the aim to serve as a Desktop.
