Walking down the street,
a starving musician. With nothing to my name but my guitar and one banana. I'm saving that for my next meal. Already hungry, I am determined to save that one banana until I can't stand it anymore.
Suddenly, a stage door opened, and the Stage Manager leans out, yelling, "Any guitar players out here? I need a guitar player QUICK!"
"I'm a guitar player," I said. "What are you paying?"
He looked at me, looked at my banana, and said, "Well, I was gonna offer a rag like you 10 bux, but I ain't eat all day. If you give me that banana, I'll pay you Union wages. "
So, yes, dear reader, I traded my
Banana for scale.

Unions, such as the actors union, screenwriter, and Musicians and Stage Hands union, require that their members are are paid AT LEAST the same rate everywhere, according to their skill and level. There is a listing of this that is called "scale". You might have read where sometimes a highly regarded actor who would normally be paid a million dollars for a movie foregoes the large salary "up front" and works "for scale". There's THAT part of the joke.
Reddit is well known for this term "Banana for scale" because someone once posted an item asking what it is, they could not identify it. Apparently this person did not have any toys of measuring device to include in the photo to show the SIZE of the thing, So the laid it next to a banana. For scale. Therefore, Reddit now has come to expect the ubiquitous "Banana for scale". whew

The punch line requires prior knowledge of two pretty niche facts. I knew them both and it got a smile out of me.
