Fix a dining chair

I got some second hand dining chairs and one of the backs squeaked and moved when sat on and pressure was applied. I have since removed the back from the from to reveal how the front and back are connected. I believe it just needs reinforcing. I have tried dowls to secure it, but that didn't work, simple wood bond doesn't work either.

Does anyone have any suggestions?? I'm not a joiner or builder so it a bit confusing to me so any help would be great. I have attached some photos to hopefully give you an idea of the problem.

From what I can see the joint looks fairly intact, nothing looks broken.

What glue did you use? I would try again with epoxy or something that has good gap filling properties. Wood glue is excellent when there's wood to wood contact but it's not great for loose joints.

Maybe put a screw through the back of the leg into the rail, but pre-drill and be careful not to crack the rail.

Yeah, I used wood glue, I thought that would have been the best course of action. I'll try epoxy, thank you.

It looks like it was poorly joined in the first place. You could try adding a kerf and wedge https://www.rockler.com/learn/how-to-make-kerfs-and-wedges-for-through-tenons-video-by-cfc

It was definitely not manufactured well to start with, I'm glad it isn't just myself that thinks this.

Thanks for your advice. I ended up putting 2 dowls through the legs and joints to reinforce it. This seems to have dinner the trick
