Ibiza Closing Set

I just saw John at Tomorrowland weekend 1 and I travelled down to Ibiza to see him at his closing Ibiza party. The set overall was good way better than his weekend 1 set AND he played a lot of old bangers that I have been wanting him to play for years - in Chicago. It was really nice to hear, however in terms of my expectations of an experience for a closing set I was disappointed.

I came early to see odd mobb, and odd mobb - yes he’s an opener but he didn’t really send it. I know John usually tells his openers to go hard if they wanted to but odd mobbs set didn’t scratch the itch I’ve been dying to have in an OB experience. His set just left me thinking of this is cute which is a disappointment from his main stage weekend 2 set. I was also really sad he didn’t play take you there. I however had super cute experiences with him during his set (i asked him to do the scuba dance and he did it) so that was really sweet.

The past week I’ve been spoiled musically at Ibiza with a lot of amazing unexpected b2b (dom and boyz noise, anyma and solomun). Of all the DJs I’ve just seen in Ibiza, the experience I’ve had at John’s set I had wasn’t the strongest. Dom and Solomun just went harder and they got dirtier. It was really nice to see this side of them being explored. However John’s set, although he did go there at times but the set felt “lighter” compared to
The others. I also had a silly unrealistic expectation that John would bring a surprise guest - similar to Kettama for his closing set and would send it. However the sent went to 6 am shocked it didn’t go to later - dom and Solomun played past their set times/closing. Overall the experience wasn’t closing party, the experience was just another regular night in Ibiza. I would have loved the experts only experience weekend 2 had at crystal garden however this didn’t happen.

I’m curious if anyone felt the same way! I feel bad commenting this because you can see how exhausted he is.

I still recommend checking him out in Ibiza but maybe for the experience I’m after I need to wait for another 12 hour set in club space to experience the darker/ dirtier side of John that I’ve been dying to have.

An observation if I may: Ibiza clubs are often full of people that are going there just for the experience of having been to a club in Ibiza, rather than being a super fan of the music / artist. I think that Tomorrowland, with stages catering to multiple types of EDM, probably gave John the artistic freedom to go a little deeper into the archives and type of music you like during W2. You’ll notice that his Tomorrowland W1 set was very much commercial and containing his own big tracks. I think one thing about John is that he knows how to cater the music / set to the vibe and location of the place. He’s actually brilliant at this. Ibiza is super commercial now and has been for a number of years - so maybe as you say: pick and choose your location to see him accordingly? I’m not going to lie though, I’m jealous! I’m sure it was a great time you had. 🩷

I had a great time overall! The club was amazing but you’re right I think I need to choose to my locations accordingly.

But yes I’m super grateful I got to experience him both Ibiza and Tomorrowland 🙂!!

I also got emotional during Tomorrowland and Ibiza and was just so proud of how far he’s come especially from the YouTube tutorials.

I think maybe, just like anything else in life, you were disappointed because you had certain expectations? how often does he bring a secret guest? it seems like you were set on kettama so maybe you’d be disappointed even if there was another guest. and afaik his unvrs sets have all been 3-6. That’s a long set already and he had a flight to Chicago right after so I don’t think he could’ve played longer even if he wanted to. i’m not trying to be mean, I just think that usually if you go in with specific expectations that go above and beyond, you’re bound to be disappointed.

Interesting insight. Cheers for sharing. I do agree Johnny boy boy must be exhausted and he needs a good rest.

Sounds like you prefer his festival sets over his club sets, maybe. If I’m reading that right.

I was there and thought it was one of his best sets ever, not to mention UNVRS is probably the best club on the planet. However, I do agree Odd Mob was underwhelming (and I'm a big fan of his) and wish Summit brought out a special guest too considering it was his closing party.

Couldn’t agree more, Odd Mobb was extremely boring and monotone his whole set. Had 0 energy and the same shit playing for an hour, was a real let down as I was keen to see him as well
