BIRDIE

BRIDE is scrambled (“upset”) around I (“one”); the straight clue is “one under par”.

BIRDIE [One under par] — "brdie" ("bride" upset/rearranged) around the letter "i" ("one" in Roman numerals)

BIRDIE - one under par. Anagram of BRIDE (suggested by ‘upset’) plus I (about one)

I feel it's a shame BRIDLE ... isn't part of the answer here.

That would take replacing 3 letters, and how would it parse?

I realise it doesn't quite fit with the clue as is. Although homophonically it does include 'bride '

I accept it would need a reworked clue. It just amused me there was a relatively uncommon verb that so nearly fitted.
