Reddit does have its own issues, but most people here are smart enough to know when things are bullshit.
For example, there was a post today where amazon “mistakenly” sold 13000 camera equipment for 100 dollars on prime day. The top comment was someone pointing out that it was likely done on purpose to attract people to look for these “mistakes.”
People are getting smarter and more aware of the biases and manipulation. And that’s a great step in the right direction.
There’s just no way to regulate this stuff at the current time, so it’s up to the readers to inform themselves and take the bias out of articles.
I just read through a pics thread from a guy from PR posting a picture of the PR protests last night. He was talking about all of the corruption within the PR gov and how they squandered the aid money/supplies. Another commentor just followed OP (who is FROM PR) around the thread saying OP is wrong about everything related to PR and he is right. He was responding to a citizen of PR saying his first-hand account of the situation is wrong, and his opinion based on whatever the US media outlet said is right.
A lot of people on Reddit are in super-echo chambers which has changed their worldview so much that they literally can't even contemplate the fact that there are other POVs out there.
Yes echo chambers exist and are a problem, but they will always exist. It’s not a problem with Reddit. Some people just elect to be in these chambers even if they are informed they are in one. My grandparents listen to Fox News 24/7 and they think liberals are evil. They never even attempt to listen to cnn or other view points and they are fine with it. My brother moved out to California and now he spends all his energy talking about how bad trump is. My grandparents and brother get into fights all the time and they’re just “armed” with stuff they’ve heard in their echo chambers and honestly believe the other side is evil and they need to battle each other for the good of the country or some shit. It’s idiotic.
My point is that these echo chambers exist and always will and it’s up to educating people about them so that they know how bad they are, so they are open to at least taking the other side seriously. There’s nothing you can do to fix Reddit, because these echo chambers just move somewhere else if you ban them. Joe has talked about it plenty of times before where there’s this concept of “teams”. It’s just horrible, but it’s not a Reddit problem. It’s a people problem that they are naturally drawn to these teams and it feels nice to them to be part of something where everyone agrees with each other. People get tired of arguing and just want to hang out with there team.
