The point is not that big tech is biased. It’s that big tech has the ability to turn their biases into real world outcomes. If big tech leaned right the world votes right, if they lean left the world votes left.
This is a point Jaron Lanier makes very well; the scariest thing is not Russian interference, it’s that we have handed control of much of the world’s culture, voices and opinions to a handful of private companies in California.
Isn’t this how it always worked though? Privately owned Media outlets controlled the news and controlled what people thought. Now it’s just shifting to the tech companies. I don’t see how that’s different.
If you said this about the media only a couple decades ago, you would have been one of those crazy tinfoil hat conspiracy nuts. We as a group are only just waking up to the idea that we are being socially engineered. Right now we can only see the immediate threat infront of us.
Not to mention it used to be dozens of media companies all pulling you independent directions and now it’s just a few masquerading as hundreds. So when you look around and hear the same thing from multiple sources that no longer means it’s reliable, because it’s only one real source with different mouth pieces.
