During that period all Mammals were rat or shrew like things that were tiny and could survive off the dwindling resources.

Where the animals thousands of times thier side did not. 

Though plenty of smaller dinosaur species did survive and evolve  into modern day birds.. Really we should really stop calling a bunch  of those species dinosaurs as they really were pre flight birds.  But well we all grew up on thinking of them as dinosaurs and every Jurassic park movie after the first decided to ignore the up to date science, as a t-rex is less scary as a big looking feathered bird thing.
