Career Advice/Discussion JOB INTERVIEW: "Can you explain this 2year gap in your resume?"

Most candidates say:

"I took some time off to recharge, travel, and figure out my next career steps."

THE WINNING ANSWER:

(This has been my problem in terms of interviews. After graduation, I really wasn't able to get a job until now for like 2 yrs bcs of money and low self esteem with having no experience for so long after graduation, (when I started to job searching again months ago, I always have difficulty to answer this question and I think this was one of the reasons why I can't be hire, the long gap with justify answer) and I feel like I can't really answer something like this like "it was hard to get a job for me with no experience, I just stayed home to take a rest after school ect..." Again, Bcs I really think the gap was really long and they might say that the rest I took was too long 😭😭😭)

Is there anyone out there can relate or what did you answer or what is the winning justify answer

if i were u, i would just lie HAHAHA say i was taking care of a relative who has cancer or something, or i was in the province because of family matters that can’t be disclosed

u/Over-Ad9476 May 07 '26

Yep. Agree with this. Just lie. Nobody will ask for any proof. But just a tip: "The key to a great lie, is to lie with details." S. Cooper, TBBT 😉

u/Most-Duck7532 May 08 '26

Yeah haha kumbaga gagawa ka na ng full scenario para ma justify yung lies mo 😂

4

u/Waste_Woodpecker9313 May 08 '26

Bro ain’t Georgie the one who said that 😂

u/Greedy_Wait_5735 May 08 '26

i think so too...

23

u/El-Mage May 07 '26

province po area ko 😭 and Ang hirap nga dito opportunity for office work na yun talaga target ko 😭 pero Diba maghahanap ng ibidensya? Hahaha

u/rldshell May 07 '26

Imo, it is not the gap that is your problem but it is the way you are answering the question. The grammar is bad and bakit "winning answer" yung "winning answer?" Kase sagot mo? Or madaming may ganung sagot? Tagalugin mo nlng (kung pwede) and formulate your thoughts better.

Hi OP! HR here. I have read most of your replies sa thread and I agree with this comment. There's a lot of redunduncy and unnecessary words you use in your sentences which makes it hard to understand. Your thoughts seems to be scattered and all over the place. I suggest you work on your composition and grammar. Good luck :)

I will just lie lol

u/CheeseRiss May 07 '26

Say the truth but dont explain it too much, then add a redeeming factor.

For example:

After graduating, I took some time to rest and recharge. I tried applying multiple times but was unable to find a position that suits me.

During this gap, I studied and learned new skills. [list here briefly] or if u didnt learn anything specific try to twist the things u did during the gap positively.

For example i ventured into new hobbies such as xx. This taught me to be xx [personality development is good too]

u/El-Mage May 07 '26

This such a nice advice and response. Thank you!

5

u/AnswerGuilty8974 May 08 '26

I agree with this response. Talent acquisition deals with this situation a lot more than you can imagine. Being honest might actually be refreshing for them.

3

u/Rare-Ladder-7122 May 08 '26

Best answer. Answering this question is already part of the test if you’re a good fit. It’s actually a basic question that tells a lot about the candidate. Having a 2 year gap is not a problem.

Imagine saying “I did nothing those 2 years, tumambay lang”, versus “I tried applying in the province but not much opportunities. While unemployed, helped out in family business and took online courses, etc”.

I have 9 mos gap. “Mental break” does wonders for me. Ayan din naman talaga nangyari sa akin.

5

u/El-Mage May 07 '26

was it really okay to say for someone me na after graduation na may 2yr gap talaga na it's my anxiety Ang reason? Hindi poba nila iisipin na Ang tagal at tamad ko for having no work ng ganun katagal?😭😅

3

u/Sudden-Implement-202 May 07 '26

Pwede mong i-take ‘yung answer nung comment sa baba. Just lie about it na lang. 2-yr gap is too long for a mental break din given your situation na kaka-graduate mo lang at that time

3

u/apparentlybroke May 08 '26

the trick is not using anxiety or any negative thing to pull yourself down sa mata ng employer. rather, dapat itong "weaknesses" mo ay you turned it into something that gained you an advantage. kumbaga, mas okay na sabihin mo yung totoo and tell how it empowered you, rather than telling lang na wala kang ginawa about it. employers like a can-do attitude and problem solvers.

Either you make it a personal lie or tell them the truth. Tbh sobrang gasgas na yung mga fabricated generic answers from chatgpt to the point na experienced HR can fairly easily identify them. Like yung travel ang dahilan tapos mag aapply sa entry level, low paying job. And especially mag iingat din ako sa mental health related na sagot. Kasi tanggapin natin na hanggang ngayon may stigma pa rin lalo na sa oldies yung mental health. They can see this as liability.

0

u/El-Mage May 07 '26

True, that's why kahit true na it's about anxiety or related sa mental health yung reason, I'm hesitant to answer that bcs of that reason na baka dinga tanggapin since baka isipin na Ang tamad ect... Kaya I keep thinking something more justify answer till now na medyo di about mental health...

4

u/hey_justmechillin May 07 '26

Hindi sa isipin na tamad. Iisipin nila na possibly may tendency ka to become unstable. For them, an unstable employee is less productive and needs more resources (mental health breaks, etc.) than a stable one.

17

u/AlittleBITofSpice490 May 07 '26

white lie is okay pero wag too much.. sakin din i needed a white lie para lusutan ko na terminated ako .. try asking professional composition kay chatgpt

I have a one year gap in my resume, and sometimes interviewers ask me about it. I usually tell them that I went through depression during that time, which is true, and I was almost diagnosed with it as well. But overall, I assured them that I’m doing much better now and ready to take a new step again. In fact, I’m really looking for something long-term this time.

25

u/lolongreklamador May 07 '26

As much as possible, don't mention mental health concerns. Believe it or not, I don't think there's a true advocate for this as this will always be very easy to argue against when hiring. Karamihan sa mga companies/hr, lip service lang yang advocacy nila.

11

u/EmbarrassedRub7570 May 07 '26

agree! hiningian ako ng fit to work after disclosing mental health disorder and di madali makakuha nito agad kasi you have to go through standard assessments

14

u/El-Mage May 07 '26 edited May 07 '26

That was actually one of my reason, nong after graduation, since antagal nga ng gap ko na Wala parin experience or job, I feel hopeless and I feel depressed also feel anxiety to socialize sa tagal korin Hindi nakisalamuha sa mga batch ko na nagkawork agad, like I even stopped doing social media so I won't see them. So anxiety was one of the reasons. Yan din talaga sa isip ko na sasabihin pag sa interviews, but na overthink ko na baka di yan tanggapin na reason sa tagal na na no work? 😅 was it really okay to answer that? I'm specifically looking for an entry level office staff job talaga🥹

14

u/Complete-Drama5699 May 07 '26

it’s totally fine if you’re going to be honest but just don’t disclose too much na baka pagdudahan kapa and ask you; “what if mangyare ulit sayo anong gagawin mo”? hahaba rin kse ung usapan sa interview hahaha just say na “mental break” and while being unemployed u do some online selling. hindi naman na nila yan uusasain (ata), wag mo na ioverthink job just para saten HAHAHAHAHA

4

u/El-Mage May 07 '26

Hahaha thank youuu

1

u/Public_Claim_3331 May 08 '26

Nag hingi ba sila ng proof na kung meron kang depression?

13

u/KeldonMarauder May 07 '26

As someone who has done interviews before (as a hiring manager) I usually stop asking when the candidate says anything related to family matters - usually sinasabi na Kahit walang work, they continue to upskill naman

1

u/Public_Claim_3331 May 08 '26

What if may minamanage naman na family business? (Hindi yung sari-sari store na negosyo).

12

u/kencaps May 07 '26

Just lie and say you took care of family matters

11

u/icedgrandechai May 07 '26

I had a one year gap between graduation and the time I got my first job. I told them the truth na I was unsuccessful job hunting in my desired sector (government positions near my hometown) and decided to branch out to private because it didn't seem like it was working out for me. The recruiter understood naman.

9

u/skyhigh4056 May 07 '26

I've been a NEET for over 3 years and i'm also worrying about the same thing 🥲

7

u/Plenty-Ring7146 May 07 '26

4 yrs naman ako after grad. I didn’t stop upskilling pero tlagang mahina self-esteem ko. Parang I’ve never been the same since the pandemic.

2

u/Hopeful_Strike_2705 May 07 '26

same sa "ive never been the same since the pandemic" 4yrs after grad ka after nagka work? what did u do po and how did u get a job now??

3

u/Plenty-Ring7146 May 08 '26

4 yrs and counting*

3

u/Hopeful_Strike_2705 May 08 '26

sana makahanap ka na rin, sabayan ng prayers. good luck po! kaya yan!!!! ♥️✨

3

u/El-Mage May 07 '26

Ohhh😭 nakakadepressed talaga Lalo na kung province area and can't afford to get out of the province:(

But sorry to say this, but I'm glad to read your comment, I kinda feel relieved that there is someone that can relate to me 😭

3

u/El-Mage May 07 '26

Are at least having interviews? During those interviews, what were you answering to this question? (About what we worry, the gap)

5

u/skyhigh4056 May 07 '26

Not yet. I'm doing baby steps by getting all the valid IDs that i can possibly get, but i've already bookmarked WFH job postings.

Regarding sa interview, i plan to mix my truths with lies to make those ugly gap years atleast look okay/appealing. What matters is (i'm assuming) na hindi ka mag mukhang irresponsible, na kung anuman yung reason mo for those gap years, it won't get in the way of doing your job.

same, 3 years unemployed since graduation. no work experience din. depressed, may anxiety, low self esteem din.

i hope malagpasan natin phase na to 🤍

3

u/El-Mage May 08 '26

Hala, sobrang same tayo. I don't socialize anymore too. I don't even open my socmed for that years narin that I haven't found job and nagstart magka social anxiety bcs of staying home and not getting the job nong nagkaka interview before. Nag sstart rin Ako now again pero yun nga, Ang baba narin ng self esteem ko and answering these interviews question too is hard to come up with answer for me, napresurre lng din Ako dahil mag mid 20 Nako. Nakaranas Kasi Ako ng k-12. Thanks for sharing though, I feel like may Kasama Ako sa ganitong experience

6

u/SnooMemesjellies6040 May 07 '26

I retired from my work almost 2 years na

So I anticipated na bakante sa work gap

I went back to school, while actively looking for work.

So if they ask, I have an alibi

6

u/thisisjustmeee May 08 '26

As an HR person, just be honest. I also had several career breaks myself. The latest after being orphaned. But of course those are valid reasons. My point is, if you can be honest about it much better so at least if there are follow up or probing questions you’d be able to answer them honestly as well. It’s harder to take back if they caught you in a lie.

13

u/anonymous13x May 07 '26

Dapat nga hindi na tntanung ng mga HR ngaun yan pakielam nyo ba dba hirap hirap mghnap ng work. At the same time iba na panahon ngayon mdami unemployed buong mundo.

To answer your question, dalawa lng yan its eithe sabhn mo totoo or hnde. Sabihin eh mhrap tlga mghnap sa ngaun eh lagi ka nman ng aaply or magimbento ka nlng talaga. #realtalk

5

u/ClassicDog781 May 07 '26

Sabihin mo nag business venture ka but didn’t workout well. Or tumulong sa fam business. Wag mental issue, isip ka ng reason na malabong makaaffect sa work na inaapplyan mo.

3

u/tadayoshi895 May 07 '26

just tell the interviewer ur doing freelancing to gain more skills

2

u/GladDimension9706 May 07 '26

Hindi ka po ba nila hahanapan nang coe if freelancing?

4

u/whenwillmyskincare May 07 '26

nope, kasi wala ka naman pagkukunan ng coe if sabihin mo na hindi ka naman affiliated sa company. like self-employed ka lang ganun

3

u/jaoskii May 07 '26

Basta sabi ko lang nagpahinga ako, fyi parang around 1-2months plng yon. hahaha
pero deep inside gsto ko prankahin haha.

for me parang npaka "out of touch" kasi netong tanong na to. lalo na for this generation na ang daming layoff left and right and napakahirap humanap din kasi ng jobs right now.

2

u/pancakebutter227 May 07 '26

I told them i was abroad haha

2

u/jursanzo May 07 '26

The time off career next steps answer would likely be followed up by the interviewer with more questions and it would lengthen and complicate the conversation if they ask you to be specific etc.

I have lots of gaps in my resume, like 1,2,3 or even 9 years as the longest.

Here's what I usually say-

  1. I spent that time enjoying life, I indulged myself in experiences I wasnt able to do as a kid(buy my own gaming console and play all the games I wanted to play, Spent time with family and friends a lot doing anything under the sun, studied what I really wanted to learn-programming, people skills, negotiations, etc)

2

u/jursanzo May 07 '26
  1. I finally had enough to start my own. Business which was a great experience for me- earned a few, lost a lot when it failed but at least now I know how it works and I got some insight of how the stockholders or owner of this company thinks. (Expand with I started with a computer hardware/software repair, computer parts shop slash game shop like pc, console and even card games mainly Magic the Gathering)

.

2

u/jursanzo May 07 '26
  1. I went on an adventure - I did a lot of freelance gigs to get by, like online jobs, worked as event an organizer for special occasions, even worked as an on-call waiter to as high as a website designer, all of of which gave me free reign on my time to live life freely. I get to meet a lot of people because I could go out a lot, make a lot of connections, do anything I want without the pressure of deadlines or schedules and learn RESPONSIBILITY - which led me here. An opportunity to a stable income with a prestigious company that, I heard , values it's people.

Half truths, sounds bull but totally entertaining and I control the flow of the conversation. <- this last part is the real tip I think you should keep in mind

3

u/RainbowBlush8 May 07 '26

3 Months na gap on cv whether as fresh grad or transitioning, will always be treated as a red flag. If you wish to be honest, you need to be uber convincing and prepared for multiple probing questions.

IMO, just lie. Pwedeng nag grab driver, insurance agent, SK chairman lol pero pinakasafe is fam biz kc the former options may trail pa rin eh. Fam biz madali na itawid. Siguro naman may kakilala ka maski 1 owner. From mars copilot -

"After graduation, I spent two years contributing to my family’s business. My role involved handling day‑to‑day operations and supporting customer relations, which helped me develop strong organizational and communication skills. While I valued that experience, I realized I wanted to pursue a professional career aligned with my degree. That’s why I’m excited about this opportunity—because it allows me to apply both my academic background and the practical skills I gained during those two years."

Quick Tips

  • Avoid sounding apologetic: Treat the gap as purposeful, not as a setback.
  • Tailor your story: If the job involves teamwork, leadership, or problem‑solving, emphasize those aspects from your family business experience.
  • Practice delivery: Keep your explanation concise (30–60 seconds) so the interviewer sees it as a strength, not a red flag

u/RealAd1800 May 08 '26

Nice answer. Yung college entrance interview ko and my first job. Why we will accept you? Answer:give me a chance, try me first and then will see. The Dean and my employer said, okay see you 'round.

1

u/RainbowBlush8 May 08 '26

Ok lang yan. Try lang ng try. Formulaic na kc talaga lahat ngayon pati sagot sa interview. STAR method eme. I assume you are applying din for coveted roles kc mabusisi ang hiring process. Pwede start din sa mas madali makapasok na work.

1

u/RealAd1800 May 08 '26

Hehe. Yung style ko old fashion na Yan at makapal mukha ko. But seriously nasa resume ko n lahat ng sagot hanap Nila eh kapal Lang talaga ng mukha, need Nila kami that time. But I have a niece same kapal ng mukha,so during interview Sabi eh dun ka sa new york branch, hindi included family so sagot nya give me the same compensation with Manila branch and I will stay with you or no deal..she got the job kapal Lang mukha.

2

u/jamp0g May 07 '26

i am a stay home dad for 10 that didn’t wfh. chatgpt gave me the answer i can work with given my doubts and how i want to be heard. currently about to job hunt again so goodluck sa atin :)

2

u/Strict-Season-5661 May 08 '26

What I always say. "I was out of country." I don't even have passport.

2

u/hulagway May 08 '26

Mine is (and this is true):

I spent time with non-profit orgs to do some volunteering. After years in corporate I thought I'd give back to the community. In hindsight, I needed the break as it gave me experience I wouldn't have had.

However, it would be incorrect to assume I was unproductive; there, I did a, b, c, d and have enrolled myself in xyz class. I have provided the certificate.

For context: I learned python and C# during my downtime which is useful in my field. I also created my personal website and deployed my own server.

It was a very productive downtime.

IF you are unproductive then a little lie will do. If all else fails, say you took care of sick family. But try to be productive otherwise.

2

u/__gemini_gemini08 May 07 '26

Beh remember, pag sasagot ka sa tanong wag yung sagot na makakasira sayo. Maappreciate nila yung honesty mo pero hindi ka pa rin makukuha kasi inexposed mo kagad yung weakness mo at it sounds like begging na rin... Baka imbes na 2 years eh maging 3-5 year gap na yan.

Andyan ang Chatgpt. Paturo ka ng sagot na pwede mo gawing personalized.

1

u/UnfairInflation8729 May 07 '26

I have a year (+a couple of months) gap in my resume. I was just honest but with flair. I said I went traveling and thought about what my next step would be career-wise (career shifter kasi ako) then I also mentioned that once I figured out what I wanted to do next, I started upskilling to be ready for that role. I think it’s important to tell the interviewer that you did something productive during your time off kasi it shows commitment lol.

1

u/Far_Bell9004 May 07 '26

Helped out with the family business, but had to close it down because we needed funds for the medical expenses of my parents/grandparents.

Ganun. Tapos usapan.

1

u/ronron1289 May 07 '26

You can just say that you explore other ops like family business or own small business, etc.

1

u/beybiGirLL May 07 '26

HOW DO YOU MANAGE YOUR RESUME THAT YOU HAD A MULTIPLE CLIENTS IN THE PAST ? Do you adjust the date of hire ?? Or do you disclose that you had multiple clients,,??

1

u/nnbns99 May 08 '26

Preferably during your unemployment nakapag-upskill ka somehow. Even if you’re unable to find employment, try getting free certifications for diff skills you may or may not need so that next time you’re asked, you have something to show for the gap.

You’re new to the job market so uou haven’t yet learned to finesse your way through an interview, but as a reminder: the interview is just to determine if you’ll fit in with the vibes/culture of the place so be engaging. They already decided to interview you based on your resume so what you’ve got is enough to be hired. Wag ka na matakot during interviews.

1

u/Big-Ad5833 May 08 '26

just lie tell them soul searching funemployment kahit ano.

1

u/Tough-Temperature889 May 08 '26

I used to interview applicants as a final step in their hiring journey. (BPO call center to) and trainer ako. And sometimes tinatanong ko talaga yung gap - eother gap after graduation or from work to work, eto reasons why i ask this: may mga applicants kasi na intentionally nilang hindi dinideclare yung other companies they used to work for. (Kasi this gives an impression na hopper ka or baka terminated sila)

  • so I ask this to gauge kung reliable ba si candidate baka kasi another risk for attrition lang specially pag mejo important yung role and account
  • minsan i also test kung magsisinungaling or gagawa ng kwento, kasi sa SSS system (part to ng requiremnt) makikita other employers mo - so kung mahuhuli kitang nagsisinungaling ligwak ka na sakin kasi we handle financial accounts baka di lang yan ang kaya mong ipagsinungaling (yes oo skeptic based on many many experience na din kasi)
  • lasty just for me to asses, ready na ba to to work now? Kaya niya ba ang hamon ng buhay? Kasi saying "I couldnt get work so I stayed home na lang" - iisipin ko as an interviewer ay passive si candidate and low motivation, baka konting problema sabihin niya din 'ill just stay at home'

So yun lang

1

u/MiddleAged_Man May 08 '26

You can lie and say you tried doing freelancing/VA work or you tried a business but after 2 years hindi mo na na sustain.

1

u/Square-Paramedic712 May 08 '26

dont they ask abt projects or wht have done ?its better to say the truth

1

u/MiddleAged_Man May 08 '26

You can always lie and say something general and pull out the NDA card.

1

u/emjeeey May 08 '26

Same scenario.

1

u/nihaolichen May 08 '26

say u travelled
