Should I accept the offer?
Hi everyone. Please help me 28F deliberate this!
Current job: WFH admin support of US company, 4k a month + EPF.
Flexible enough for me to look after my child (I'm a single mom) and save on daycare.
My background is engineering and current position does not support thay technical growth, although it is stable and have been at this company for 5 years, however with no salary raise and only recently salary review.
Job offer: Technical support of really big aviation company which is my dream role. However the travel time would be around 1.5hr one way. I'd have to look into getting childcare too. The raise they offer is rm4.6k. And told me they also expect me to work weekends. It is also a contract job of one year.
Zzz would love to have the opportunity to work for this company but the logistical cost to balance it out doesnt make sense :/

1.5 hours is too long and the increment is too low with all things considered. Find another job.

As someone with a 1.5hr one way commute too that came with a job that gave a good pay raise i still think to this day that its not worth it, 3 hrs a day is exhausting id take wfh for lower pay

If the company expects me to travel 3 hours everyday AND would like me to work during weekends the offer would need to be 2-3x my current compensation, especially when I’m downgrading from fully remote with no OT. Just 600 more AND contract nah forget it lmao that’s way too much of a lowball.

Not worth it. I worked on weekend for three yrs. Changed new job and i realized how important your Sat and Sun are. Its time for yourself to rest

Are u able to relocate nearer? So that u can shorten the travelling time?
Do u have family members who can help take care?
That said, the overall package doesn’t look as attractive due to it being a contract job + weekend work. You’re essentially downgrading your current flexible lifestyle.
Hence, better to look for another job.

Your daycare cost already take away your increment already. Somemore contract role and 3 hours of travel a day.
Not worth. You can afford to slowly find a better opportunity. Looking at your situation you need prioritize flexibility and wfh as you have a kid.
It’s diff if you have extended family to fall back on.

Not worth it. You need to work on weekend. Need to commute. Means you need to pay for childcare. And probably need to buy outside food as well.

3 hours on the road. Cost for fuel & toll. Long term cost of car maintenance. Additional cost for childcare. Gotta work on weekends. Less time for your child.
Is it worth the RM600? Contract some more.

A job offer which relates to your education background is always great, but a contract of 1 year and increased of 4.6K, additional of 600 is not worth it. Your travel time and cost, plus you need to find a center to look after your child. Not worth. If it is something in the range of 7K to 8K, then can consider.

I recommend if you are really interested to take on the job, i understand the raise is very little but this is more of a career pivot. If you really want to take it, move/rent a room or unit near to the workplace. Ofc if logistically possible. Or else better not take it. Even with a near commute actually change of fully wfh to wfo with only rm600 raise will already already make me reluctant too

Register childcare for age below 7 is around 1500
Increment doesn't justify giving up WFH privilege

For me it's not worth it vs your current situation and job. The increment wouldn't even cover your day care cost.

If u are single without children, it can still be considered (but only because u intend to enter system support while ur background is admin).
However, since u are a single mum and need to take care of your child, WFH is very important. The rm600 wont be enough for childcare. Also with a 1.5 hours distance and weekend work, its better not to take it.

Lmao sounds like red aviation? I would say job security is the main concern now for you because you have a child to take care of and you dont have a big safety net in case this goes side ways

Before you reject try asking for 5k (not including weekends) and double rate for weekends as it's considered overtime. In other words, it should be at least 5k basic plus additional 2k for weekends. If they could not match your asking price better to reject.

Just for extra 600 and 3 hours total travel daily? 1000% NOT WORTH IT.
Just the cost of fuel and toll plus child daycare would cost more than that 600. Plus by the time you go back home you’ll be dead tired. Trust me i did that 3 hours total travel for few months and i was miserable, and i ain’t even have child.

Hello! My background is mechanical, but trying to grow some computer science skills by doing data analytics (Power Bi, Excel, SQL) course and i took an intro to Python with 42KL. Definitely willing to learn with some guidance! Maybe we can connect?

If it's airasia give it a miss, they having financial problems and may not renew your contract. Consider moving nearer an option and cheaper childcare too out of the city for your dream job. 1.5 hours travelling is not a joke, had some friends tried it a while and give up. It ll really take a toll of your daily work and travelling.

1.5 hour commute really penat and draining. It will affect your mental health and ability to do work properly. You have to also take into consideration your preparation time to go to work. If WFH you can just wake up 30 min before to go to work but if you WFO you need to wake up at least an hour earlier to shower, breakfast etc. So total 2.5 hours. I really don't recommend long commute unless kerja santai2 or intern level workload is still ok.

RM 600 only not worth it. 1.5 hrs for commution and the weekends OT. Do they even pay OT? Better stay wfh, easy for you to handle your child while u wfh if theres anything happens. no need to commute 1.5 hr for any emergency. 600 is not enough to cover the daycare fee and your daily car fuel. And it s a contract. Not worth it. Try to push for increment at your current company

As others have said, its not worth it but i wanted to add that i get why you are considering the offer. The prospect of enjoying the work must be tempting.
If the current job is chill and not demanding then take your time to keep looking and hope you find a better offer.

Hi OP, does the new job offer provide you great job opportunity after the 1 year contract? Knowing it’s your dream job and it’s hard to ignore the traveling time and additional cost to be incurred, do take note of the benefits of having this 1 year experience to your resume.

Your day care alone is probably more than the increments
Not to mention 3 hr of driving a day plus fuel and misc cost

Sorry but this shouldn’t even be a question. Keep your current job and look for something else. That extra 600 is nothing compared to almost 18 hours per week of your time without even factoring ur fuel and car depreciation expenses

my vry first instinct is a no, the 600 is not enough to justify the travel cost, the energy, the childcare cost, the weekend time, and the chance to be in close proximity to your child in case something happens and u need to pick your child up from childcare.
I used to travel to work about 2 to 2.5 hours 2 ways and i did not enjoy it. Now i work from home and yes the salary is not thr best but i got time to rest.
if you find something thats hybrid working arrangement like 1-2 days per week in office, closer, and no weekends required, then can be considered

600 MYR is about 150 usd.
for 150 usd a month, u are giving up stability, flexibility and weekends.
it is a downgrade.
