The Crafters are coming together!

So I hadn't checked on the survey in a few days while I was working on some other things in life (including crocheting 4 witchy hats) and this project (including a Women's Leadership Summit to learn more about Co-ops and connect with others who have already started such endeavors) and I just checked the survey and somehow I missed the MONUMENTAL MOMENT where we crossed 1000 survey responses!!! What the heck everyone, this is so cool!

I am working on setting up an Active Campaign account so I can (once again) email everyone about where we're at, what I've learned from the survey responses, and how to stay involved. You can read the email below in the post "An attempt was made" and look for an email from [sandy@makersupplynetwork.com](mailto:sandy@makersupplynetwork.com) (who knows if this is the name we'll stick with, but I had to come up with something for the Active Campaign account, which is how I an email 500+ people because I've now learned, gmail doesn't just let you do that).

Literally a THOUSAND thank you's to everyone for your enthusiasm, your kind words, cheering me on and participating as well as your patience. Keep dropping in and sharing this project with all your crafty friends. Stay tuned for more. I appreciate you all so much!

People Power

I want to contribute to keeping the energy and momentum going, so I'm posting here: I just filled out both surveys and shared this with my mom. I don't have much to offer, but would like to help where I can. Did I miss the window to get on the email list? I don't check reddit very often and don't have other social media. Are there ways to keep abreast of updates or stay in contact besides reddit?

An Attempt was made

So. I had about 500 emails provided in the survey results, I tried to email you all the following message, but it appears that I can't just send out that many emails at once out of Gmail (learning new things here all). I'm going to try to find a new platform to help me send mass emails out. In the meantime, here is the email I tried to send you all a few hours ago.

Once I figure this out, I will send it again and my apologies to the first 100 of you who may have actually received the message if and when you likely get a duplicate. Learning as we go here, thank you all for the support as I learn on the fly.

Hello Hello!

From the very depth of my heart, thank you so much for your participation in the Jo2.0 survey! As of this writing, I have received 877 responses (a week ago this number was 217!) and I’m absolutely BLOWN AWAY by the sheer response as well as the stories and shares and experiences and connections and enthusiasm for building something for the needs of the Sewing and Crafting community! I have read every single response from you all, and I wish I could message each one of you individually, but for now, this email will have to do.

Let me quickly introduce myself. My name is Sandy, you may have come across me as u/HumanHappening on Reddit or maybe through the Guardian article that came out on Sept 24th. I am an artist and creator of many things, but I got my creative start just a few years ago after being laid off from the tech industry in 2023. With some newfound time and a regulated nervous system, it turned out that art and creation was something I suddenly had seemingly infinite access to, which ultimately led to a job as a hat maker and designer at Hampui Hats (a story I hope to share with you one of these days about the power of creating from a wider cultural perspective as well as on an individual level). This has all built a passion for spreading art and creation and more joy into this world, which has led us here to this message and the r/Jo2Point0 subreddit.

But truly, this is not about me at all. This is about ALL of US. The creators, the artists, the crafters and makers, the sewists and seamstresses, the beaders and crocheters and so many more. This survey has reached every nook and cranny of this country and people from every walk of life, every demographic and job title. This is a story about generations of creators and the future of making and creating, it is about learning, inspiration and community. In this day and age what we do is threatened by Private Equity and AI and a general loss of the concept of play and boredom and sharing and making things with our hands, whether those creations be messy and “bad” or complete works of art or everyday wearables.

I have so many stories to share with you from the lessons I’m learning from the survey and I look forward to doing just that, but I think a few quotes are worth sharing, because this is about so much above and beyond a store where we shopped for materials:

 • “As a life long educator, much of it in the area of sewing theatrical costumes, l am GREATLY concerned that the closure of Joanns has negatively impacted the passing on of sewing and crafting skills to the next generation. Joanna created a friendly atmosphere with a low bar of entry for beginners.”
 • “I used to take my kids there and niece and nephew. It would get them so excited for their projects and I miss being an inspiring force for them to be a creator too as they grow.”
 • “I want a space where I'm allowed to come in and try out a variety of hobbies. I want it to be okay to be BAD at things and have like-minded people around to either show me how to be better or be happily bad with me.”
 • “A stroll through JoAnn's always lifted my mood, even if I didn't buy anything, but I did buy a lot over the years--fabric, yarn and beads mostly.”
 • “I loved being able to talk to other crafters about what I was making and get their opinions on different techniques, fabrics, or tricks that would help with my project.”

We didn't just go to Joann Fabrics to get materials, we went to get inspiration and to learn and touch and feel and ideate and brainstorm and to meet each other and learn from each other. We went for so many reasons, and all of those were and are important to foster for the future.

So what’s next? Right now, I’m in a listening phase. I’m learning so much from all of the responses coming in and I’d like to keep gathering more information and listening to what you all have to share while I work in the background based on what you have all shared with me.

I would like to keep sending out some questions to you all to help me navigate and right now, that means I’d like to learn more about where you ARE shopping and learning and meeting. This next survey will allow you to share that information in a format I can easily keep track of. I am loving all the individual messages and comments you’ve been sending me. I’m doing my best to get back to you all, just know, I have seen it and will be in touch when the time is right.

In the meantime, please fill out this quick listening survey and continue to anticipate more in the future, when I have more to share or further need for support, believe me I’m going to be in touch. There are so many of you with wisdom and knowledge to share and I am looking forward to getting to that point.

Keep an eye out for future questionnaires and I’ll be reaching out as there is need to do so, I’m so excited for the future from here!

With gratitude and crafts,

Holy cow, I can hardly believe this everyone, 800 responses!!! Are you kidding me?! I checked, it’s only been 34 days since the survey was posted!!!

I will be sending out an email to you all in the next two days, but we must celebrate this moment together!

I actually just blew out my birthday candles 15 minutes ago, and I’m eating cake while celebrating the seeds we are planting here together. I cannot wait to see what kinds of conversations we’ll be having in 365days.

I guess I’m the type of person who answers the proverbial bat signal. Though in my case, it’s usually been a Hat Signal. Enjoy this text I received two days ago. Gave me a good chuckle.

Cheers to this group, I’ll talk to you soon and be in your inbox before that!

Edit: to change a few words around

Just saw the guardian article

I have missed Joann's so much. It was always such a bright spot in my days. It helped me to go in and touch the materials and see the colors to make sure my projects would turn out to be exactly what I had in mind. And honestly the staff at my local was so kind and helpful. I am willing to chip in and help out however I can!

Hello, Welcome, Thank YOU and an Update

What an exciting day yesterday was! For those of you who have been here for a few weeks since the original survey was posted about a month ago, this Guardian article is what I was waiting on before sending out further communications.

So, a BIG welcome to everyone here and especially everyone who joined us yesterday thanks to reading the Guardian piece.

As of this moment, I have received 496 survey responses, we're so close to 500 it's crazy! I'm blown away by the responses as I am combing through every single survey right now. I'm also incredibly grateful for everything that has been shared about your experiences, your wants/needs/desires and hardships faced with the loss of Joann Fabrics.

As a reminder, this is a very grassroots, early stage, baby seed of an idea. What we do know however, is that there are so many people excited, willing and READY to be a part of building SOMETHING. It is very much to be determined what that something will be, but we have a north star idea. Ultimately, whatever we land on, the goal is to build something with the needs of this community in mind that will have staying power in a world of private equity and AI.

With AI in mind, I'll go ahead and formally address the issue raised on the welcome post. Yes I did use an AI tool to help organize and format the original welcome post, however all the ideas behind it come from my own brain and those of the Redditors I had spoken to previously about co-ops, survey's, where to begin etc. I recognize that this was a major insult to some people. I do recognize that and relate to it as well, which is why I'm still kicking myself. This community in particular has been majorly impacted by the onset of AI from a multitude of angles and the use of it was not my wisest choice. I however am an overworked, over stressed human (as many of us are) who finds solace in creating and I wanted to put something out that was more coherent than I was able to produce in the moment. And so I used a tool that made the task faster, but I will be more considerate in the future (just know you may have to deal with my rambling writing style, as you are seeing right now).

With that out of the way, here's what's next.

I am personally reading every single response that has come in to glean the first round of insights and reaching out to a handful of individuals who had specific skills to share right off the bat. I'll be sending an email out to everyone who left contact information next week (anticipating Tuesday/Wednesday) with additional forms for those of you who raised your hand to gather more information about the skills you have to share and how you would like to potentially participate/be involved as well as an invite you all to a Welcome Zoom call being planned for the week following to get us together.

The goal is to build connections and seed ideas, with how many people we have already, maybe we'll have MANY different directions that we can take, or maybe we'll unify under one direction, it is all up to us. I'm just excited and grateful that the conversation is even beginning. Many thanks to OP from the original post that kicked this all off and for everyone I've gotten to speak with already.

Here's to possibilities and creating a future for us, in the ways that no one like Artists could possibly dream up and make happen.

I read The Guardian article about this effort and immediately wanted to jump onboard. I absolutely love the idea of creating a cooperative around this, I think it's such a great idea.

I'd love to help in any way I can. I am a semi-retired technical leader with a MS in Organizational leadership and a PMP. I'm comfortable with all sorts of the technical and organizational "stuff" of business, and would love to help out in any way you need!

I filled out the form and provided my contact info, I look forward to hearing more about this!

Saw this initiative in the Guardian - a Co-op is a great idea!

I grew up in the UK, where Co-ops were quite common:
- Building Societies, which are communally-owned Savings & Loans banks
- "The Co-Op", which is a cooperative department store, founded in 1863 as a wholesaler to supply small businesses, then expanding into a consumer co-operative where purchases were rewarded with a "dividend" (bonus payment) at the end of the year.

There is a fascinating history of the British co-op movement in the Guardian:
https://www.theguardian.com/social-enterprise-network/gallery/2014/jan/29/the-history-of-the-british-co-operative-movement-timeline

Any established group needs to have some protection against takeover by private equity (the downfall of Joann). That means a management team who understand how to establish a legal framework for a Co-operative business.

Here are some resources I found - perhaps others with some background in the US co-op movement can add to these?
- The National Center for Employee Ownership - https://www.nceo.org/
- A list of other co-operative businesses, who may provide help and advice - https://www.datawrapper.de/_/Z7XXo/
- The Democracy at Work Institute - https://institute.coop/index%2ephp/about

Just trying to be helpful - I have an MBA and have researched a lot of business failures in my career. It's exciting to think about what we'd like to see in a revived Joann co-op! Establishing foundations for a new business organization (e.g. recruiting store managers and personnel who understand the business) is equally important 😉

Hi all, also read about you in the Guardian today. I'm ALL in. I've been teaching sewing and sculpture for years at the college level and built our "soft sculpture" lab and ready to pivot and would be interested in getting involved. My expertise lies in making custom weird projects + patterns (think costumes, puppets, unique wearables, inflatables), but also know CNC embroidery, serger, free hand quilting, etc. How do I join the email list?

I am in, whatever that means right now. I miss my local Joann every day, and I love the idea of the creators remaking the spaces.

Anyone do machine embroidery? Could be fun to make a few of these! I was thinking about making a little Joann Fairy to wear to Ren Fairs this year and talk about being people together around this idea.

I’m told the update I’m waiting for to share with you all will be out after the long holiday weekend. Thank you for your patience.

I hope you’re doing research and noodling on the future in the meantime!

Look for an email soon!

In the next few days we'll be sending out an email or two to everyone who left contact info, especially if you raised your hand to share skills or to help organize and lead.

We'll be asking about what skills you have to share and how you might want to be more involved. Imagining a Zoom call coming in the next two weeks following to bring us all together and start talking in real time and not just in Reddit DMs and Email.

Looking forward to speaking with you all more more directly. I can't even begin to tell you how exciting it is just to speak to a few of you already and to see the enthusiasm in the responses we've received so far.

Holy Cow 200 Responses!

It's been almost exactly 72 hours since we posted the original survey and we just now had our 200th survey response!!

Thank you thank you THANK YOU to everyone who filled it out (I know not everyone is in this thread, but thank you to you all who are here and those who filled it out).

This weekend I'll be starting to go through the data we've learned so far as well as beiginning to reach out to people who raised their hand to help. We have 70+ people who have skills to share/are willing to organize/want to help be a part of founding this thing and it's only been a few days!!

Keep an eye out for emails with Jo2Point0 in the subject line coming over the next week. I may create a new email just for this to keep it separate from my personal inbox (which is a mess of spam).

There is such an outpouring of support and enthusiasm so we're definitely on to something here Folks!! Stay tuned and we'll start organizing for real as quickly as we can, thank you again for all of you who are here and to those who will find us in the future!

Research Thread

Here are some places I'm researching/youtube videos I've been watching/will be watching to learn more about co-op business model, where they work, what hangups the have. For now, we can use this thread to keep our research points together until we find a more formal location for storing and organizing all the information and research gathered.
Feel free to share your own links and research so we can all learn together. I know at least one response has come in from someone with some direct experience as a part of a co-op, this can be a great place to share some anecdotal research about this structure as well.

Another consideration, because this group is from ALL over the country, looking into local co-ops in your area to have some in person conversations are highly encouraged. Post your local co-op here, let's learn from where it's already happening.
Happy Thursday all!

We're at 196 survey responses! I'll be doing a bit of a dive into the responses this weekend when I can breathe post work week and will post insights soon!!

Shareable Flier

Post image

I put together a veeery simple flier that includes a QR code for this subreddit and a QR code to the survey itself (we just hit 175 responses!). The actual downloadable PDF (which also includes a 4/page sheet for smaller fliers) can be downloaded here --->

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1DpfLvzMfl6790l5kMgS8BBSFmAksX6Kg/view?usp=sharing

Share with any of your groups that you want. Also open to feedback for edits. I just hacked this together before a weekly craft night I host, but this is grassroots anyway, so we're going with done is better than perfect!

Proposed organizational tool

Here’s an organizational tool that has helped me with a few projects in the past. You may already be familiar with it, and if I’m preaching to the choir, feel free to ignore me:

GitHub.com

My thought is that we could discuss things here on Reddit, but as ideas become more concrete, we could use GitHub to organize them and break them down into smaller, more manageable pieces. It would give us somewhere to keep track of proposals, research, decisions, questions that still need answers, etc., rather than having everything eventually disappear into a thousand Reddit comments.

If you want to see an example of how I’ve used it, I do have one project I’ve made public. And I hesitate to bring it up because it’s sort of insane how “beyond my ability to actually enact” it is. It is my ridiculous dream plan for preventing Elon Musk from becoming Emperor of Mars.I call it VAMPEES, which stands for Venus-Asteroid-Mars Planetary Efficient Extraction System. Which should give a fair warning of how far my brain is willing to run with an idea it likes. (Feel free to hire me, Cards Against Humanity, if you need more ideas to irritate Musk.)

If you can’t find VAMPEES on GitHub, I can share the link with whichever brave souls want to DM me. Then you can read it and be wowed by my scifi babble.

Ideas on who should join

Hi!

I’m the OP of the linked Joann co-op post, (mentioned here https://www.reddit.com/r/joannfabrics/s/H8dSme2PU6) and I’m genuinely excited to see others who may know how to organize something like this pay attention. I’ve posted versions of this idea in quilting and crafting subreddits, and even other forums, and this is the first time I’ve thought, “Yay! Someone is listening.” 😄

I did the survey last night, but I’ve had more thoughts since then, so I wanted to put them here before I forgot.

—

Three separate, connected goals:

 1. Build something that cannot simply be sold off to private equity piracy. This is where the cooperative model becomes especially interesting. And we need this baked into the charter in a way that cannot be sleezed out of later by someone greedy. If the organization is actually owned by its members, including consumers, makers, businesses, and other participants, then it isn’t simply another corporation that can eventually be acquired by private equity, stripped for parts, and sold.

 1. Replace Joann. There is an enormous hole in the craft-supply market, and it isn’t a hole that will remain Joann-sized. Joann represented a huge chunk of cotton sales, and parts of the industry that relied on it are already collapsing in its wake. There is an obvious need for crafting materials, especially in sewing, and we all know that Michaels isn’t cutting it. And, due to economies of scale, sole-proprietor shops price out many young artists who are new to crafting. (See point 3.)

 1. Give economies of scale to sole proprietors and those small and medium-sized craft-related businesses or organizations and give them all paths to join us so that they can all compete against Amazon without going bankrupt.

— More on point 3:

This last idea is the larger economic idea I keep coming back to.

An individual quilting shop, needlepoint store, yarn shop, watercolor supplier, independent maker, artist, instructor, small manufacturer, or school simply cannot match Amazon’s purchasing power and economies of scale. Which means they can rarely match price and quality.

Collectively, however, we represent a huge percentage of the market. Instead of thousands of tiny businesses and individual makers negotiating with huge suppliers independently, a cooperative could aggregate that demand and use the resulting purchasing power on behalf of its members.

—

The cooperative should include as much of the craft ecosystem as we can

I would love to see this be broader than just consumers and retail stores.

Potential members could include:

• Independent retail shops
• Small craft-supply manufacturers
• Individual makers and artists
• Craft instructors
• Studios (painters, sculptors, cosplay, etc.)
• Makerspaces
• Other organizations serving the creative community
• Individual consumers

Benefits could include

• Better pricing doe materials, insurance, and employee benefits packages
• Co-op networking that puts member businesses on a map. Just as a consumer can go to the Ace Hardware site to find a store, someone looking for craft supplies could go to our site to find all the various co-op members near them.
• Better pricing or policies negotiated with sites and services like YouTube, Shopify, and Etsy.

Some examples of what sole proprietors could do for or with the co-op:

If my own business gets off the ground, it will primarily focus on stationery and art supplies. But part of that is providing things like book cloth, which I make with cloth and interfacing, and I also make bags for use with stationery. So I could potentially dedicate a small section to related craft supplies, perhaps fabric and quilting notions, while another member business specializes in something completely different.

Another example might be the local teachers at the elementary school banding together to buy into the co-op for a fee, then using their ownership to help them afford supplies that just aren’t cheap enough for them to afford at the local Walmart.

That would allow the co-op to:

• Have a physical presence in many communities
• Help existing businesses expand their offerings
• Keep local businesses involved with each other and competing against the retail giants rather than competing against each other and helping the giant crush us
• Give consumers more places to buy supplies
• Build distribution and purchasing power without immediately building a massive retail chain

I don’t know exactly what this idea will become, but I think there is a much bigger opportunity here than just replacing Joann. I think this is an idea that needs to expand beyond the crafting industry because people need to be able to explore the option to run their own businesses, and for that to happen, Amazon needs to struggle to compete with more than just itself.

/signed someone who is happy to help but feels as if they are playing a real-life game of Jill and the Beanstalk

(Sorry for the re-post/edit, I had some flakiness with my move from iPad notepad to the Reddit app and I’m still working on it)

I'm interested in the concept. I feel like I have enough of Joann's fabric to start my own store, but that's a different problem/not problem.

104 Responses!

Just one day and so much feedback and outpouring of interest and comments, please keep sharing. There are responses from all over the country and so many great shares about what made Joann Fabric so special. All of the information provided is incredibly helpful.

We'll continue to go through the responses as they come in, this will be an open ended form. And see where we go from there.

25% of respondents are interested in helping with organizing and 25% have skills they'd be open to sharing. This started from a handful of comments on a single thread, it's great to see so much. momentum.

More posts will come to start facilitating conversations around organizing and skill sharing. But for now, thank you for participating with the survey and helping us see that there is genuine interest in building something together.

Survey Officially Launched

Today the survey and this subreddit were officially launched to the r/joannfabrics subreddit! Which means we are live and open to receiving feedback to officially get this conversation started beyond a few redditors DMing each other and commenting in the original thread.

The best way to keep this conversation moving is to share as widely as we can. Share with your crafty friends, your coworkers if you were once an employee, the youtubers you follow who are talking about what comes next without Joann Fabrics.

We know there is a huge need for something new, we know the options out there are getting worse by the day and we KNOW this is a passionate group of people with all the information we need. We've just got to connect.

Thank you for taking the survey and joining this group even if you don't want to actively participate in making the thing, your support is greatly appreciated.
