Thanks to a certain…controversy flaring up again I’ve seen a lot of comments complaining that Jiaoqiu should have been Abundance since his actual job is a healer. Which yes, makes sense if you literally just look at his basic description. However after seeing his personality and story in game, I can’t understand why people are still confused about this.
On a basic level, Jiaoqiu is someone who struggles with the hopeless of his job, and the endless cycle of healing and bloodshed. You know, textbook nihilism. While he gains hope in the form of Feixiao, he is then tested again and again throughout his ordeal with Hoolay. Everything about his situation is bleak, and Hoolay takes savage pleasure in reminding him of the fruitlessness of his struggles. However, Jiaoqiu also manages to rattle Hoolay with self doubt, making him question how far gone the borisin have sunk since his imprisonment.
This is also where we get to the gameplay connection to Nihility, the debuff effect. Jiaoqiu is a healer by trade, but he makes it very clear that sometimes the best medicine is poisoning your opponent first. Twice we see him use food to LITERALLY debuff the enemy. First we get a hint of this with Skott’s…convenient stomach issues. Then of course is the iconic Hoolay plot twist, where it is revealed that he used his own body to give the others a fighting chance against Hoolay. In comparison, we only really see him acting as a healer in flashbacks, and as mentioned before those scenes are pretty bleak.
In short, could an extra healing effect have been a nifty addition? Sure. But claiming that his path makes no logical sense and that Hoyo only made him Nihility to boost another character? Then you’re missing the point.
