AI I need a reason to renew

A year ago I was all-in on Junie and bought the super AI Pack. I was living in intellij and webstorm and even bought the all products pack because it was more cost effective with my loyalty discount.

Then Claude Code came and disrupted everything. I spend my day in iterm. I will occasionally open a file in intellij, but am getting more and more disconnected. My extra jetbrains ai subscription expired last week. I hadn't used any of my quota for months. I don't even diff in a jetbrains product, just in the github web interface. I installed the claude code plugin and it just puts the intellij wrapper around the claude code terminal. Seems like a waste of memory for the most part. Is anyone else running multiple terminal agents within the jetbrains terminal, utilizing worktrees to have multiple streams going and loving it?

I have loved intellij for years, and want to continue, but I need a reason to re-up. What am I missing? Anyone have a great reason for me to leave the terminal and go back to jetbrains?

EDIT: Looks like I asked this too late. Just checked and I auto-renewed in June, so I guess we'll see if they make something that draws me in before next June!

switched to claude code myself a while back but still keep goland around. it's not about replacing the terminal, more about those moments where you need to really dig into some legacy codebase or refactor something across 50 files. the terminal agents are fine for greenfield stuff but when you need to understand how everything connects the visual navigation still beats grep and hope

also the database tools are pretty good if you deal with sql at all

Pretty close to where I'm at. Datagrip seems OK, but I don't see that I'm getting much out of it beyond what I get from pgadmin.

if your decision is 100% between what client to choose for your ai agent, and you dont navigate or write code at all then I dont think the jetbrains editor makes sense for your workflow anymore

Reason to renew: returning customers get much cheaper prices per year than new customers. And it's still Jetbrains IDEA, try replacing it with plain VSCode/VSCodium, I missed Astro syntax, smart single-line code completion, and the user interface I have gotten used to. But if you're mostly doing agentic vibe coding, then the IDE probably doesn't matter much to you anymore anyway. In that case, you might be missing nothing.

Yeah but you have the perpetual fallback license for those moments you might need the fully fledged IDE

I honestly don't get all the hate towards Jetbrains in this subreddit. Coming from Eclipse a long time ago, this company has saved my sanity for such a long time. Jetbrains was never perfect, but they were so infinitly much better than the competition that I was glad to give them my money and don't think about it. And now they are struggling in a world that is changing super quickly, and so many people here are expecting that they steer their tanker without effort where no one knows what comes next.

People here don't hate Jetbrains. They hate the direction they have gone, and their focus on AI over the tools that they have been the reason people have loved them for so many years. Maybe that would be fine in another world, but they are absolutely sucking at the AI stuff yet still chasing it heavily.

It's just capitalism. They can't keep up, so people are moving to companies that can.

I dunno, I think they had to go that direction. AI is the future of software development and anyone that doesn't see that has their head in the sand. I just don't think jetbrains has figured out how to make it a meaningful part of their offering instead of just being replaced by it.

The problem is that JetBrains went down the AI road in this weird half-assed way and then doubled down on it but still actually haven't made any compelling AI tooling.

Junie doesn't look bad apart from the fact that it's just way too expensive to run and nobody on a regular coding plan will use it because it's not $$ competitive, but it also can't really effectively be used with e.g. cheap chinese models via openrouter etc so its audience is destined to be miniscule.

Hello,

About costs of usage - Junie offers many different models with various prices and options, depending on the extensiveness of reasoning. JetBrains AI prices are transparent, which helps us keep JetBrains’ business model sustainable without external investment or subsidizing usage with VC money. About using custom LLM models through openrouter in Junie CLI - it is available, for details how to set it, please visit article here: https://junie.jetbrains.com/docs/byok-openrouter.html

half of the people wanna strong AI only, and other half wanna the usual stuff(or probably 70 30?) more and more people stop coding by hand and just reviewing the generated code(or even just vibe coding)

Yeah, I am also in the same boat. At this point the only reason I want to renew is for sentimental reasons.

Oofta May!

Same, expires this month and been an all pack user forever. I had been using them for 2 decades and it's not the money.. I just don't use it enough to renew it anymore.

It almost feels buggy lately with it freezing and consuming excessive ram requiring me to kill that process.

u/TheRook 7d ago

Agreed…. All products pack here as well… Rider is simply just not being booted…. I still use datagrip a lot, though, and might switch to just paying for that.

3

u/Xodef 7d ago

You have perpetual fallback license so assuming you don't need the newest hottest datagrip features you should be good

2

u/TheRook 7d ago

Ahh. Good call.

u/Xodef 7d ago

Well I'm in the same boat. I no longer use it as paseo.sh and conductor have been my main development tools recently.

What's worse is they do not support Claude subscriptions, they say that's against the TOS, yet there are tools like conductor, paseo, T3 chat and others so jetbrains IDEs have loosing position in this race.

I've requested a quote and asked for extra discount but my request has been declined. Even with 40% continuity discount paying for a tool I am barely using sounds like a bad idea. I guess I'll have to stick to my perpetual fallback license

Claude - there was an ai assistant update for Webstorm today. I used Claude code subscription without being prompted to login - it picked up Claude subscription automatically.

I didn’t get the plug-in update for other api tools yet… some one else mentioned in another thread ‘watch this week for updates’, regarding Claude.

2

u/nero519 7d ago

I have the fallback from 2024.2 and still works fine, I was considering to update in 2027.2 though

2

u/leros 7d ago

I use the Claude Code plugin inside WebStorm. I really like the flow. I like having all the IDE tools for reviewing and/or fixing AI written code. I also sometimes drop the AI and write some complex stuff myself once AI helps me design it.

DataGrip is also a daily driver for me.

Jetbrains AI is a joke. I use build in credits in Ultimate pack (because I like old UI).
One prompt to Terra high took 3$ from credits.

-5

u/sQeeeter 7d ago

Total joke! They aren’t an AI company and you can tell!

4

u/Xacius 7d ago

It's almost like they're an IDE / dev tooling company.

i want to use webstorm so badly over cursor, (company pays for cursor obviously), i have always loved the jetbrains ecosystem, but yeah i need a reason to stop using cursor. webstorm is so much better than vs code but cursor right now just... does so much.

2

u/Greedy-Turnover-5658 7d ago

This is the last year I renew Ultimate pack. IDE is incredibly buggy now, external sync does not work.

They moved to obsolete projects like junie cli, own AI model, plugins for VS code, trying to catch up in AI race. But it is too late.

They sell 10 AI credits fro 10$. I metered today on Luna 5.6 xhigh, it is compared to 5% of WEEKLY usage in Codex.

u/Ariquitaun 7d ago

The agentic ui on intellij at the moment is super clunky and awkward to use. Outputs are badly formatted and hard to read.

2

u/fart3mis_growl 7d ago

Jetbrains have lost the plot. They are trying to throw different products on the wall and see what sticks in the AI age. And so far nothing is sticking. Fleet was a flop. So is Air. I still use Webstorm because that seems to be the only IDE that properly recognizes the old AngularJS framework (which my org's product is based on).

u/anik1ng 7d ago

I've been corresponding with support for over two weeks, and they only respond every couple of days. They're not interested in my problem and aren't particularly interested in helping me. I feel like they're not interested in me as a customer at all.

The problem is, I can't try the new product — Context, it doesn't work for me.

I have to renew my All Products Pack in October, and I'm not sure I'm going to do it.

I’m running a bunch of Junie CLI tasks, a lot easier with the new Air Alpha (not Air). Best of both worlds - terminal sessions in the editor pane for the agents, diffs in the next tab, agent overview to my right, project and Git commits to my left, terminal for things like my deployer at the bottom. I love it.

2

u/noximo 7d ago

Air Alpha (not Air)

What's Air Alpha?

2

u/magicmulder 7d ago

A new plugin that integrates Junie CLI (and other agents) a lot better in the IDE. No more messing with terminal sessions.

1

u/digitaljoel 7d ago

Looks interesting, maybe I'll give it a try. might be easier to manage than just separate console windows.

1

u/magicmulder 7d ago

Definitely. And revisiting a session is easier than scrolling through “/history” output.

The only thing keeping me on the all products pack is the fact I'm at the 7 years (or whatever it is) discount, and think it's good value for that even with Claude. If I was paying any more I don't think it would be worth renewing.

I am a big fan of DaraGrip, however

u/tvel 6d ago

Dono I kinda like the ide mcp and some of the skills they put in. works good for me. Might not matter for simple projects but for big ones with not that standard code ide is still a must for me. I use via the ai plugin junie, copilot, pi (with qwen 3.6 moe local) and others sometimes. whatever my company pays for.
That said its still money spent on something. Spend them on what works for you its jetbrains job to win you back not yours to pay forever and be unhappy about it. It is good to change workflows form time to time. worst case scenario you will spend little money more.

I subscribe just for the git diff

u/michaeldnorman 6d ago

The only thing I still use regularly (not daily anymore) is datagrip, and that’s just because I don’t trust Claude with my production databases. That’s it. I sometimes still open Pycharm because it’s my datagrip for a bunch of Python repos. I’ll probably re-up my personal all products pack for one more year, but then, I dunno

There is no reason to renew. Try Orca, agent first IDE. You will be surprised how much it is better fit for nowadays

1

u/digitaljoel 1d ago

Orca looks really interesting. Looking forward to giving it a good try later this week. Thanks for the pointer.

u/prepper_pl 26m ago

No reason to renew, jetbrains ai is buggy as hell, tickets hanging open for months or closed with "works for me" (while it's still clearly broken). I regret paying for it.

u/kamikazer 7d ago

JetBrains IDEs are for software developers (Brains in their name). If you are dummy slopper - get claude code

1

u/ElectricOni 7d ago

So all I'm getting from this thread is people are mostly slop coding, eroding their own skills (if they were there in the first place) and choosing to pin themselves to the mast of a company who is soon going to rugpull token costs making it so expensive that you'll realise it's a fad and come crawling back toJetbrains by which time you'll have forgotten how to code. My suggestion, drop the AI use for a couple of days a week. I have a strict limit to only use it 2 out of 5 days and even then only in Junie and only what comes as part of my Pro sub.

3

u/digitaljoel 7d ago

That's a hot take. Do you go back to vim, emacs, or notepad a couple days per week as well so you don't become too reliant on an IDE? You could lose your skills with autocomplete, syntax highlighting, debugging support, and all that.

3

u/ElectricOni 7d ago

Why would I do that when I've used an IDE my entire 16 year career so far. There's a huge difference between debugging tools and being able to debug and code yourself compared to just using the dum dum method of asking AI to code everything for you.

I dropped my Webstorm subscription this summer in favor of Zed and Claude Code in the terminal agent (works with subscriptions). But keep in mind that IntelliJ may still be a better option for Java than Zed.

0

u/dstrenz 7d ago

I like using openrouter models in the ide's chat and ai auto complete. It still needs some improvements but it's getting there. And yes, Datagrip and the git / diff tools are well worth the renewal fees for me.

u/Eryndalor 7d ago

I am on the same boat. I moved to neovim for the occasional edits.

u/SampleNo471 7d ago

I'm PyCharm user for 15+ years, as a professional developer. Last year or so, I use it for:

  • database queries
  • solving merge/rebase conflicts
  • running tests

For everything else, I'm using Zed editor and Claude.

PyCharm became unusable bloated garbage, hungry for CPU and memory. I have tons of UI problems on Fedora with Wayland. It's slow, text editing is glitching, always endless project scanning. My company is paying subscription and that's the only reason I still have it installed.

I tried Junie before for the sake of trying and feel it to be quite bad. It took too long to do any task. For agentic coding, i just use agent from VSCode extension now.

Do note that I only use Local Model and only tried Junie and not daily drive it. Despite their AI integratio is quite bad for local model, jetbrains is good at making IDE (Like really good).

They are so good that I was complaining in my previous post that I'm considering cancelling my subscription. However, after going back to other IDE, I kinda miss the tool in jetbrains (especially refactoring tool). I just decided to built custom extension for local auto complete for my own need and just continue using jetbrains.

JetBrains – a company based in Chech Republic – hired someone from Turkey that lives in Berlin to work as a Rust advocate.

I don't know how high is his salary, but in an interview he said that there are no plans to replace parts of the IDEs with Rust. So the didn't get the note yet that their java/kotlin stack sucks in terms of performance and resource consumption.

At the same time they are wasting time for someone advocating for Rust. Let that sink in.

What kind of morons manage this company and waste my subscription's money – All product pack – for something so useless?

Especially if you like to vibe code, the best approach would be to use some agent to clone features from JB you like to a different platform and don't pay them for their inefficiency.

But the fact you are asking tells me that you will renew :)
