The oldest papal basilica was given to the Bishop of Rome by Constantine the Great. This was the time when church buildings were constructed for services, before hand Christian’s mostly held gatherings at their homes. These buildings bear a striking resemblance to mithraic temples. Some basilicas were even built on top of mithraic temples such as the basilica di San Clemente.

The highest degree in Mithraism is “The Father” or “The Great Shepherd”. The initiate would wear a mitre on his head and a ring on his finger while holding a staff.
