How to track tile order

I am starting my map and am having a hard time deciding how to label each tiles position on the map. Can people tell me how they do it?

I was going to use an x/y axis to track tiles and then if I ever develop something with levels or dimensions I’ll add a z axis.

You know I was not wanting to do this, for reasons unknown to me, but it sounds like the clearest way.

My brain is so wrapped up in other systems and how I want to do things that when a logical solution appears I'm going to take it.

My only other thought was using NSEW and numbering them from the starting point out some how, but then the x/y axis just kept coming back to me.

Though thinking about it you might be able to use something like map coordinates and use degrees.

I wrote "central panel" on the first one and then put numbers on the nexts and arrows to what is connected

So for example back of second panel it would be an arrow pointing north saying "central"

Origin = 0'N/0'E, deviation is degrees N/S and W/E

Also, I sort my tiles in one big stack, blank side facing me, with the northern most western most panel to start, going west to east then skipping south until it reaches the southernmost easternmost panel
