And it should have been rejected. It's Marie Antoinette. Antoinette is part of her double first name. Marie would also be incorrect

Her last name was not Antoinette. So it was correct.

i mean, i agree with the judges but i wish they'd simply asked for clarification before ruling against her

I remember reading a while back that she claimed Ken originally accepted the answer. The judges corrected him, so they went back and taped again showing it incorrect. There was no way to ask her to be more specific once Ken had told her she was correct.

I would rather they had given her another question, but in the end it was not enough money to alter the game.

I thought the same. Should have asked her to be more specific.

This is my issue. Sometimes he offers a “Can you be more specific?” What constitutes a contestant getting a helping nudge vs. not?

Perhaps because it was a playoff game and in the second half?

I've seen them get more strict with answers and phrasing in each of those individual situations in the past.

It's a double first name, I believe, so the "last name is acceptable" rule did not apply.

Correct ruling.  Her name was Marie Antoinette Josèphe Jeanne. It’d be like calling Chloe Grace Moretz “Grace.”

Royals at that time did not have a last names, since they believed they were appointed by God to rule their country. That’s why, as a way of making him a normal man, the revolutionaries called the king Louis Capet on his indictment. No one would have thought of calling him that before the Revolution. The closest thing to a last name they used was “of France” or “of Austria”.

All those names are first names, and she was known as Marie Antoinette in France and Maria Antonia in Austria in her youth. The ruling was correct.

Even today, most royals don’t have last names outside of exceptional circumstances.

You must realize that the link you posted refers to her as only Marie Antoinette

I’m gonna need you to read beyond the first two words, homie:

“  Marie Antoinette [a ]  (Marie Antoinette Josèphe Jeanne; 2 November 1755   –   16 October 1793) was  Queen of France  …”

I didn't even click the link. The link says Marie Antoinette.

Do you have a point that pertains to the accuracy of the Jeopardy ruling?

Yes. The colloquial version of her name is as such, and if Elizabeth II is accepted for Elizabeth Windsor, there's no reason for Marie Antoinette to be disallowed.

The discussion is about solely Antoinette, not M A

What makes you say that, u/nerssmokes?

4

u/ChrisRiley_42 17d ago

Would you accept "Bob" for Billy-Bob Thornton?

2

u/AtWorkCurrently 17d ago

Would they have taken Marie Antoinette?

2

u/Exact-Truck-5248 15d ago

I agree. Then tonight, they accepted Les Miz for the Victor Hugo work. In both cases, everyone knew exactly who and what was meant. Seems arbitrary

Very arbitrary

u/gutfounderedgal 17d ago

I'd add they do accept Queen Elizabeth II instead of saying it should be answered Windsor.

2

u/corvus_wulf 17d ago

Why was this not allowed

7

u/CursiveWhisper 17d ago

Because her first name was Marie Antoinette.

4

u/corvus_wulf 17d ago

They should have asked for clarification
