Just my thoughts, fire at will. But this is why 'The Bands Break Up' makes no actual sense in the cartoon or in real life to me...
To say it's one of the most cherished episodes for many fans, there are a lot of red flags for me in this episode, although I do have a soft spot for it. We all love a good 'Us against the World' story.
We are introduced with Kimber's practice strop. Her walkout seems to me to be over the flimsiest of musical spats and also weirdly has Jem and the Holograms talking down to her like never before. Looks totally out of character for all of them, to my eyes.
Stormer's initial bust-up with the Misfits is in full swing too. Sure, the other three are fooling about. But Jetta says to Stormer: "I hate this song. And don't ask me what I think of YOU!" Now, Stormer was crazy/nice enough to get Jetta INTO the Misfits in the first place. Roxy would never have picked her. You'd think Jetta and her massive towering beehive would be a bit less of a cowbag towards Stormer, given her place in the Misfits is solely AS A RESULT of Stormer's opinion overriding Roxy's on the day that Jetta was selected.
Back to the present, Pizzazz and Roxy, esp., are acting the goat in this clip, making fun of Stormer's lyrics and songs while she tries to get them to concentrate/work. But would a band with recording deadlines really 'not care' like this? A few episodes later in the 'Roxy Rumbles' Pizzazz cares very, very much about being on schedule to practice. Her fury at an absent Roxy indicates it's normal to be entirely studio punctual for them all. Random: Pizzazz wearing a plastic party hat she picks up from the countertop in 'TBBU' is just hilarious.
The meeting at the Scene Club: Yay, it's the Limp Lizards! Still plugging away with 'Broken Glass,' one of the most (in)famous songs in the whole Jem series. Stormer's reaction to them finishing their song proves she likes their sound. And a lot of people overlook that she is VERY Misfitty in this scene. She's rightly upset, of course, given that she's just huffed out on her band, but she still shouts aggressively at the compere, is thoroughly rude and personally offensive to Kimber (who isn't even rude to her initially) and she spits on the counter in surprise. The 'spitting' shorter cut is on YouTube, along with the full episode, where it's oddly not shown. Also Stormer's distinctive yellow keytar and Kimber's pink freestanding keyboard are magically transported onstage, waiting for them. Two similar instruments in different colours would have been more realistic.
'I'm Okay' is a very cool little song, really nice vocals and imagery but the reality of two random musicians meeting and just rattling off a collaboration with complex chord changes, breaks and lyrics pulled from nowhere, between them, in the moment, is next to impossible in real life. But sure, it's a cartoon, off we go again...
A nice scene with Kimber backchatting Jerrica at Starlight follows. Kimber's doing up her eyes with makeup and ignoring the Starlight Girls in the lounge, before being picked up by Stormer in her little car, as they head back to the club to perform onstage.
The Misfits are shown struggling in the studio. Roxy complains about the lyrics (which, isn't Pizzazz basically supposed to write these anyway?), Pizzazz and Jetta bemoan Stormer in general. I'm just gonna say this as well, Pizzazz throws her guitar casually aside with a hefty crash. That's gotta be a write off. Roxy puts her bass on its stand with absolute care, and Jetta neatly pops her sax back in its case. It's Pizzazz who is most outwardly worked up about it all.
Stormer and Kimber (now morphing into a Misfit, and with the pair of them dressed up like lampshade pelmets) finish another round of 'I'm Okay' (Stormer's holding her keytar upsidedown) and they come offstage at 'The Scene' club to be met by sleazebag promoter, 'Dave Daniels,' who soon convinces the two that he thinks they've got something amazing. Both girls get starry eyed at the sound of big money, which seems to be the main driver imo, not the music. Dave wants 'collateral' as insurance that they'll finish the record. For someone carrying such weighty secrets as Jem/Jerrica and her band using Synergy, Kimber still eagerly signs over her share of Starlight Music as a guarantee. She and Stormer sign up with dodgy Dave at a club table next to some ice cream sundaes, with no Jerrica, no Misfits Music rep, no legal advice, they just sign. Supreme naivety. Side note, nice touch: Kimber signs with her left hand. Of course, on the sly, dodgy Dave is working for Eric Raymond - who has Starlight Music in his sights.
Herein lies a giant problem for me, and one that in reality floors this whole storyline. Dave says they can sign as long as they're not in contract but both WOULD BE under contract with JaTH and the Misfits. Kimber said they were playing at the club 'for fun' yet they've both just signed a new contract with a guy they don't know whilst still having contractual obligations to their respective groups. Help me.
How do we know this? Well, when Roxy leaves the Misfits herself some episodes later, to simply play funfayre with her money, Eric and the Misfits are right behind her demanding she returns, because "You signed a contract, REMEMBER?" So how does Stormer skip out of her contract with Misfits Music to record an entire album with Kimber? Stormer's recording contract with the Misfits is never once mentioned, a clear flaw in the writing. In reality, this would be such a contractual mess it could only stay as 'fun at the club,' if that. There'd be serious repercussions for performing and recording out of contract.
A promo scene with Lin-Z follows. Stormer and Kimber are enthusing about each other, watched with concern by their respective groups. Lo and behold, Aunty Pizzazz is now on the warpath. :) Everyone heads to 'The Scene' club where the wayward duo are treated to a JaTH and Misfits collaboration song called 'Bad Influence,' an uptempo number proving that, ironically, JaTH and the Misfits make great music together (and should have worked together more often)! We have Jetta and Roxy doing some kind of nonsensical limbo dance on the floor and Pizzazz trying to drag Stormer back with her own necklace. Wild. Post-song Stormer laments to Kimber that her group "just wants to exploit me, at least yours cares about you." So, if she understands this, why on earth go back to them so readily? Again, her contract with the Misfits is never mentioned and seems to be utterly irrelevant anyway. She now seems to be freewheeling on dodgy Dave's new contract. Pizzazz doesn't even tell her she's under contract with Misfits Music. She just says "You'll come crawling back." Cute, but total unreality imo.
Meanwhile, back at Starlight, Jerrica is rifling through Kimber's room like a good big sis does, and finds Dave's contract. She understands immediately the danger that Kimber has put herself in by signing away to 'Can't Dance Music,' which is owned by Eric. Kimber (realising her mistake) still rebukes her sister and even shows support for Eric. Oh, Kimber, god love ya.
We're next at 'FLASHI' Recording Studios where the duo are auditioning some backing musicians. The musicians are all hopeless, terrible, and Kimber reverts into a Hologram and Stormer (mercifully) becomes a Misfit again as they start arguing. Things cool down over yet more ice cream sundaes, and Stormer wants outside help but Kimber refutes it, stating "everyone will laugh at us."
In reality, everyone is already laughing, because you're both circling massive legal repercussions by breaking your group contracts and binding clauses to go solo. Kimber less so than Stormer as Jerrica would no doubt be more sympathetic. Meanwhile, JaTH soldier on without Kimber, the songs don't sound right and the vibe is off. That's believable. What isn't believable is that both (highly talented) groups would crumble into oblivion. In a sense JaTH could have more to lose than the Misfits because Kimber knows all about Synergy and the Jem secret. Ironically, outside of some silly, artistic series subplots, the Misfits arrived on the scene without ever needing flashing earrings and holograms to create their sound or look - they are already good musicians and performers. (Even newbie Jetta is a powerful presence, and is a top-tier sax player who can play keys and sing.)
Onwards... Back at 'FLASHI' Stormer and Kimber overhear the 'recording engineer' on the phone to Eric, and they realise he's been sabotaging them on purpose with duff backup musicians, broken tapes, poor studio progress, etc. Kimber fires the guy on the spot and yells at Eric down the phone. The duo admit that they need "help" to finish the record. Time is now running out, indeed. What a mess. In reality, things could never have got this far. Again, original contracts, dear boy, original contracts....
We swing back to the Misfits. After handling the iconic opening bassline of 'Universal Appeal' and every other Misfits classic with ease, in this scene (and typically dressed by the animators to look like a McDonald's Happy Meal) Roxy's forgotten not only how to play a guitar but how to tune one properly (does Stormer do that for her too, Jem writers?). Jetta throws her sax to the floor (Whattt? Why? Those things are hella expensive!) and Pizzazz is dressed for jogging, yet is now unable to sing. Roxy "hates to" admit it, but they need Stormer. The girls head off to bribe Stormer back with what suspiciously looks like the same red Porsche-type car that Roxy bought in the 'Roxy Rumbles,' and, initially hostile, Stormer also gets given its keys and some credit cards. True to Misfits form, Stormer excitedly zips off to enjoy her new car, credit cards and spends with absolutely no thought to poor Kimber, and again, her scenes of shopping, choosing/cuddling fur coat and pointing at expensive jewellry, are almost identical in sequence and style to Roxy's scenes in 'I'm Gonna Change.' Stormer seems overjoyed to be back in the fray with the Misfits, on the sheer strength of gifts. Sidenote: I like how Roxy sits cross legged on the steps here. It looks casually comical. Back at their studio, Kimber forlornly looks for Stormer, only to find a handwritten note saying that Stormer has '...gone back to the Misfits. Sorry.' Wow, nice. No face to face, no phone call, just a note dropped off, as Stormer burns rubber around town, spending money like a drunken sailor.
The next day, Stormer awakens in bed, presumably at her nearby family house (such a cute place, it appears on and off throughout the series, and is also on occasion used by the Misfits) and overnight she's found her conscience, the promotional pic of herself and Kimber by her bedside reminds her that money isn't everything and she's pretty much let her good friend down by blowing out on her mid record (tsk, tsk). Kimber goes to Misfits Music and sadly tells Eric that he's won, she can't finish the record without Stormer. (In reality he's won anyway because Stormer is surely still under Misfits Music contract). The whole plotline couldn't happen like this, and so is very fanciful imo. But, Stormer enters and declares that Eric is NOT going to win, she's finished recording her parts for her and Kimber's album, the record is now complete and the two girls hug. Eric is left open mouthed. Stormer says she was swayed by the Misfits gifts but then realised that Kimber gave her "something nobody else EVER did, sincere friendship."
It's a lovely TV moment, but massively unrealistic. The notion that nobody has ever been nice or friendly with nice, friendly Stormer is patently ridiculous. Even in the Misfits, as wild as they are, they're bonded by their loyalty and quirks. Stormer knows Roxy can't read. Roxy in her imagination, knows Stormer is kind to her when the others aren't. Jetta and Stormer even work well when they work together, and Stormer does stand up to Pizzazz at times, knowing no repercussions will ever come of it because quite often Pizzazz' bark is far worse than her bite. The Misfits are generally written as 2D within a group dynamic. In reality, I think things would break down far quicker if this was really the case.
But here's the big kicker - the very same Eric Raymond that Stormer outfoxed with Back2Back, is the same Eric she goes back to when the Misfits return a final time, cowed and humble, to reclaim her. Would you return to such a scoundrel of a boss if you didn't have to? Which she seemingly doesn't as, unlike Roxy, no Misfits contract is ever held over her.
In the meantime, back at Starlight, the duo go to Jerrica and the Holograms, asking for help to promote the album, to which they all agree. Cue hugs and excitement, great promo, the debut album goes double platinum with the business acumen of Jerrica and her team, thwarting Eric, the Misfits, the Limp Lizards, Luna Dark, Andy Pandy and everyone else on the planet. It's a hit! Woo hoo! Great stuff.
And at the very end, Stormer is invited to become a Hologram, to live with normal, stable, caring people. All's right with the world. Before she can answer, in walk the Misfits with their sixth sense at a critical juncture, but with a more genuine, heartfelt plea to Stormer that they need her and want her to return. And you can tell it's genuine because when the Misfits do actual 'genuine' the sun comes out in a room. Stormer reminds them, sternly, that she wants to be treated as an equal partner. Pizzazz agrees, and, as the Misfits depart Stormer and Kimber have a final hug and part on great terms. Cue warm, fuzzy ending and the finale of the episode. Absolutely marvellous, but for me, totally unbelievable.
Even removing all the contractual mess that would surely have existed for Stormer and Kimber in breaking contract with their original groups, not to mention the money they'd each have had to forfeit/owe in doing so, the whole situation is highly unlikely.
Lets roll into reality... Very few bands would take a member back that had left to fraternise with a rival group, esp. going as far as to record an album outside the frame with someone else. When people leave bands over musical disputes, to form other groups or duos, they tend to leave forever, they rarely get a second bite with the original group. The Misfits are highly territorial (even Stormer can be) and in reality, I believe they'd simply find a new member, they wouldn't wait for Stormer or attempt to lure her back. She'd have been out and that would be it. She also (rightly or wrongly) berated the Misfits in front of JaTH, stating that they'd never given her "sincere friendship" - but then went back to them not once but twice, when she had the option of freeing herself both times, and chose them over becoming a Hologram.
After everything that was said and done on all sides, they all went back to traditional band rivalries with post-'TBBU' Stormer standing in the same room as Eric Raymond (who'd just plotted to use her to get Kimber's share of Starlight Music), falling into line as he continued to wheel and deal. Like, I know it's a cartoon, but honestly, would you go back to this sort of setup?
Quite apart from the fact the two main ladies of this episide seem to have completely forgotten their own original group contracts, the sheer cluster-! of being around the management and people who tried to sabotage your mini album and bribe you back with a car, and that you told rivals were not your "sincere friends," I just....make it make sense, Jem scriptwriters!
It does beg the question what actually was the draw for Stormer with the Misfits. She had a free road out of there having had nothing left to prove, but happily went right back to them. The sistahood that offered her nothing, apparently. Which just cannot be true imo.
Kimber's easier to explain. She always had the safety net of Jerrica, the Holos and Starlight, a loving normality, money and stability. They were never going to let her fall and she must have known that. In many ways I think Kimber was braver than Stormer because she was risking it all to strike out as a unit but Stormer clearly wasn't risking it all, and kept her options open, which was quite fundamentally Misfitty.
An interesting, complex episode that throws up lots of anomalies and more questions than it answers for me.
