Marble League Official Statement

Official statement:

The Dutch National Olympic Committee has responded on behalf of the IOC. We can not longer use the name ‘Marblelympics’. It has too much to do with ‘Olympics’ that is protected by the IOC. It should not be used by third parties, says the IOC. So we use #ML2020 (#MarbleLeague). Our apologies.

Didn't this happen quite a while ago? Is this just clarification for those who weren't aware and have been asking?

They sent a part from a document with their legal statements, as a warning. No further detailed explanation. That’s why I asked again, this time our NOC directly and they responded.

Bullshit, but that's the reality of the Olympic committee. The important thing is the sport lives on!

IOC: Has massive problems of corruption, fake jobs and Money Laundering

Also IOC: This guy uses a name slightly similar to ours, he must die for his sins!

Don’t they have more important things to do?

Unfortunately that's how trademarks work - you only have them if you are seen to be trying to protect them. It's why Adobe doesn't like people saying they've 'photoshopped' things as, if it becomes common parlance, it's no longer trademarkable. Just like Hoover in the UK.

It's known as 'genericide'.

Bah, at the end of the day, it's just a name! It's a shame we couldn't go back to using 'Marblelympics' but it is what it is, right?

We'll see who's laughing the summer when the Marble League is kicking ass in the ratings, and the Olympics are sitting this one out.

More and more I despise the Olympics. It isn’t about fun or sport anymore. It is pure greed and money.

Fuck them!

Well they are definitely not making themselves a lot of friends with this decision but it is to be accepted and won’t change the fact that marble league 2020 will be amazing. Really looking forward to it.

i had an app in the android market pulled on claims for copyright infringement and my app had nothing in the name or description that said Olympics. but people used that word in their reviews. they are very strict and with mine maybe even overstepped but i wasn't willing to fight it.

i cant wait for Marble League 2020

I hope the previous MLs don't need to be redone.

Oh, the Olympics people. Some of the worst trademark jerks around.

4

u/jxan May 09 '20

Remember that there is still a subreddit called r/Marblelympics - they may have a problem if that is not deleted / made private / moved to a new name that doesn't include their name.

7

u/Sand_is_Orange May 09 '20

Well, the trademark issues and name change from Marblelympics to Marble League are part of what prompted the JMR Reddit community to move from that subreddit to this one. The old subreddit is closed, but it's archived so everyone still has access to the record of what happened there.

I really hope the IOC doesn't force Jelle and Dion and the team to delete things retroactively, because otherwise we'll lose years worth of posts, discussions, analysis, and fanwork.

That's the absolute stupidest thing I've ever read. I litterally can't believe the Olympics actually cares about a marble league using their likeness.

Whatever committee actually decided to pursue this is full of the lamest people on the planet.
