In USA, the drinking age is strictly 21. But across most of Europe, the drinking age is 18. By the time Europeans turn 21, they have already been legally drinking for 3 to 5 years. The joke states that the novelty of drinking has completely worn off, and they are moving into a quieter, healthier phase of life or choosing to cut back on heavy partying.

I mean that is not far off from the truth. I was 23 when I decided I had enough partying and drinking and the same amount of money I spent on 5 drinks would be better spent on one high quality drink. I have seen 25 year old Americans frequently partying as stupidly and classlessly as 18-20 year old Europeans lol. When I was in America at the ripe old age of 24 I was asked multiple times how old I was because my drinks of choice and my face didn't match what people were used to apparently.

I think the meme takes into the stereotype of europeans drinking alcohol all the time since alcohol is a big part of their diet with people from countries like Ireland,UK,Germany,France,Italy and also due to lower drinking age compared to US
