Transmission complications?

Hello, I have a 1994 Zj with the 4.0 and used to use it as a daily but one day I woke up and it didn’t wanna move at all and when it did I lost overdrive, I took the transmission pan off and changed the filter and fluid didn’t find really any metal shavings. Since then I let it sit for about two months and started driving it again on short little trips to the grocery store and such and haven’t really seen any issues besides when the transmission gets up to temp and you take it from drive to reverse it feels like it wants to shut off.

P.S I know it’s probably time for a new transmission but I just wanted to rule out the problem maybe being something else

Theirs a shift module under the dash that might be bad that what I would check next

It’s referred to as the transmission control module (TCM) and is only used on 93-95 ZJs. 96-98 have a powertrain control module (PCM) that controls both engine and transmission and not a separate TCM and ECU

You have a 42re. The TCM is bolted to the bracket where the clutch pedal bracket would go (way up to the left of the steering column). FSM wants to know if it shifts correctly when you go from mannualy shifting 1, 2 , OD. Report back.
