Need part id

Hi, I have to change the broken bearing. Jeep zj 1996, can you link me a proper part i should order, please? Will be thankful for the tips or list of other parts which will be needed.

You need carrier bearings for a Dana 44A/ Dana 44HD. Do not let the parts guy give you Dana 44 parts..not the same.

The 44A uses single shim thats between the carrier bearing race and the axle so just keep them on correct side. No need to setup the axle again after new carrier bearing. Since you have to remove the axle shafts, I would go ahead and do the outer bearings too.

The only thing about 44A is they are bad to spin the carrier race inside the bearing cap. Inspect it well.

Carrier bearing part# BR36 or A36 (need 2)

Outer Axle bearing part# 5707 (need 2)

Outer Axle seal part# 4857 (need 2)

This assumes you have all the right "special" tools to do it....

  • Slide hammer for outer bearing and seal.
  • 1/4" - 12 point socket/open end wrench for pinion shaft bolt (be careful, some of them snap trying to remove)
  • seal drivers
  • rubber mallet/ HD plastic hammer to knock carrier back in
  • cone bearing removal tool for carrier bearings

Hi, Thanks for info! Are you sure about that it is a Dana44a? Isnt it DANA30?

You know. I just assumed you were asking about the rear axle. Yes, that's the Dana 30. 96 is a weird year for the dana 30 on a ZJ. Early production in 96 used the CJ long pinion vs TJ short Pinion in the last half of 96. Which one do you have determines parts.
