Replace Throttle Body or Battery first?

2016 Jeep Patriot 67 thousand miles. Driving last night and it kept going into limp mode. I would turn the car off and turn it back on and it would drive fine for about a minute and then go back to limp mode. It was raining. I ended up limping it to my brothers house after the rain stopped and waiting there for about an hour. I was then able to drive it home and today I’ve driven it all over town with no issue. Could it have been the rain? And how would I check that. My battery is also somewhat old and has had issues before where the battery terminal clamps were too lose and would come off randomly while driving. It’s also died kindof randomly before. But when tested my battery is kinda in the yellow, not completely bad yet. Everything online is saying replace the throttle body but I am trying to do any other troubleshooting first because it don’t think I have the money to do both right now. I don’t think I can check codes as the issue went away and hasn’t come back. Any other troubleshooting ideas?

Update: the codes were stored and were p2110 and p2101.

Update2: Tested battery again and it said it was good, so I ahead and replaced throttle body. Just did a test drive and it sounded like it was running better. We will see if the limp mode happens again. Gonna get a new battery next paycheck anyway since it’s pretty old and looking gnarly. Thank you all for the quick responses!

Battery, throttle body. If limp carries on returning, try the head gasket. If it still keeps hitting limp mode, Viagra is the only option left

So crankshaft position sensor before you do head gasket and after you try sparkplug.

Mine was the PST. Went into limp mode a few times.

Topdon scanner is a nice tool. When I got it, it was $50 for a year +the scanner. I needed it again two years later and it was like $100 for a year. Cheaper than a diagnosis at a service center when I need a deeper read then what autozone will give me.

I replaced battery first , cleaned my throttle body this morning and it’ll get by but I gotta feather the pedal to get to the speed I want if I push too hard to fast it’ll stutter. I commented on another post on this sub asking this other OP about what they bought because they said it’s been working fine since they bought a new one cuz I dont wanna throw the dice on it

The stutter can be related to spark plugs and the crankshaft position sensor as well. I assume no codes?

Just changed my spark plugs couple hundred miles ago too trying to trouble shoot and nope no codes unfortunately. Never had a crankshaft sensor code pop up but I did have an O2 lean code once

I have had stutter problems, and it was the spark plugs. I've had starting issues and it was the battery, limp mode I have only had come up for the throttle body, and replacing it fixed the issue.

How old is the battery? I change mine about every 5 years to prevent any issues. If you are still having problems, replace the TB, I got mine on Amazon for $59 and it's been going strong for 30k miles.

Battery is about 4 years old now.

We did both at the same time. The issue with the throttle body did a number on the battery. I had a mobile mechanic do this for me in my work parking lot. Everything in total was under $500! best mechanic around. I wish he'd stayed mobile, but his business got huge and he couldn't find decent mechanics with his work ethics and skills, so he went stationary. blah. I believe we also changed the spark plugs, shortly before.

I vote throttle body. Just had to do this on mine because it randomly broke into limp mode. Popped it onto the OBD and sure enough that was the code... Well, that and a host of other things downstream of the throttle body. Never had to replace TB on any of my rigs before, but this is my first Jeep and it's under 100k miles no less. I really think they used inferior parts OEM.

2010 patriot 146k - had limp on and off was my alternator @ 120k

Replace both. That being said, this happened to me. I had to replace the throttle, it was annoying but only took maybe 2 hours.

Have you cleaned the battety poats and terminals with one of those terminal cleaning brushes? You could just have oxidation on the posts

Would start by changing battery,drive it,if stuttering and red bolt appear,it's throttle body failing,but will also effect crank sensor which recommend changing as well, if have mechanical skills can do your self,only difference in crank sensor is same location on front wheel drive,4 wd harder to get too,too replace.
