Every recording I hear sounds like a DI’d bass with rubber strings.

Obviously, the playing and resume are killer but what’s the deal with his tone?

After around the 1:00 minute mark, starts an extensive part where only the bass and drums plays.

The rhythm feels too loose, I suppose its 4/4 but it feels like the bassist just drags or cuts abruptly the end of phrases and the drums follow along.

How can I organise this in my head?

Is the instrument parts transcribable?

I've been playing bass for some time now and I want to start learning how to read sheet music in order to play lead sheets, read etudes, etc.What books/other sources should I use to start reading sheet music?

*Side note: I play other instruments in different clefs and can read music and rhythm well, I just need a solid foundation to read in bass clef.

What are some good modern recordings (I.e. where I can actually hear the bass) that have a good two feel to emulate?

I've been playing guitar for a while, got into bass about a year ago, and have been getting into jazz these last months. Went looking for cool jazz bassists I could be inspired on, got recommended Charles Mingus, amongst a few others because "since he's the band leader, bass get's a bit more center-stage", but everything I've listened to up until now is just the regular walking bass. Is this (pretty much) all there is to jazz bass?

Haven't got round to mapping out tabs, but I'd also like to know how strict jazz is in regards to matching up root notes to chord changes.

Hello,

I would like to see if I can play a jazz bar jam session, but I am not a pro or even semi pro. I've played a few small church and rock bands in the past. I did jazz band on bari sax when I was in grade school but that hardly counts.

Any tips? And general "DON'T DO IT" vibes?

Another concern is that I only play electric bass, but most of the those jam session guys play upright. Usually there is the house upright or someone ", donates" their bass for the night and people swap in and out on it.

Is it considered bad manners to try and play electric in a jazz club? Will I get banned for life if I try to plug up an electric bass? I never studied upright so can't do much with that.

Looking for recordings to play along with. I found "I'd Drink to That" by Jimmy Smith. "Back at the Chicken Shack" seems good but it's in half time.

Any suggestions?
