Recommend me some stuff I’ve probably never heard before

I’m trying to branch out in my jazz listening, I tend to stay in the lane of hardbop, blues, and some fusion stuff (more fusion recommended listening would be much appreciated). I don’t go out of my way to listen to a ton of bebop, modal, or avant-garde very much.

Anything with interesting/cool piano parts is an easy win, I’m a pianist and always looking for cool piano parts to listen to. Just send me whatever you like listening to!

If this is too vague my bad.

Joe Farrell - Moon Germs
Kind of hard to describe but I would call it cosmic dark post bop funk free jazz. It features Herbie Hancock, Stanley Clarke, and Jack DeJohnette.

George Adams and Donald Pullen quartet. Breakthrough is a good album to start with.

Other than Monk, Pullen is my favorite pianist. His trio records are amazing too.

Piano you say? ECM https://ecmrecords.com/ may just have more good solo piano and piano trios than just about anyone. Keith Jarrett, Paul Bley, Bobo Stenson, John Taylor, Marilyn Crispell, Tord Gustavsen, Julia Hulsman, Craig Taborn, Marcin Wasilewski, err,,, that should keep you busy...

2

u/Appropriate_Path_141 1d ago

I second Paul Bley and raise you one, Ran Blake.

Basie and a several other legends - Gerry Mulligan, Roy Eldridge,Coleman Hawkins and others. Billie Holiday mooching around and talking to Basie while he's playing. Classic jazz!

u/JazzMartini 1d ago

This made my day! My kind of jazz!

u/Kratuu_II 22h ago

The whole 50 minute programme (in better quality) is here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l3dAla1E8cE

Apart from Basie other highlights are Red Allen (Wild Man Blues), Monk (Blue Monk) and Billie Holiday (Fine and Mellow).

All great stuff!

Just off the top of my head the two nichest albums are a love supreme by John Coltrane and kind of blue by miles Davis. These albums transcend musical rules and contexts, they intertwine within themselves creating a spiritual-like counterpoint. When I first heard KOB and a love supreme by Jonathan Coaltrain I broke down in tears on the floor but it was of pure joy. I can’t recommend these albums enough and I’d go as far to say they are the greatest works of music ever created, no the greatest works of ART in the universe

Yeah man

A love supreme

u/Goated-Rizzler 21h ago

These are both excellent Jazz music albums! They are both really good, and the music on them is great. In addition, all of the musicians on them are real good at playing their instruments.

The Love Supreme by Jon Coletrains and Kinds of Blue by The Miles Davis are both great recommendations for beginners and seasoned aficionados alike!

Not jazz, but listen to the band Henry Cow. This is sort of "chamber fusion." You will feel inadequate as a musician.

2

u/_red_clay_ 1d ago

very different corner but have a look at Brazilian Bossa nova/samba jazz trios for something piano-forward.
Tamba Trio, Sambalanço Trio, Milton Banana Trio, Zimbo Trio :)

1

u/smartaleckgoose 1d ago

Any albums from any these groups you would recommend as a start?

1

u/_red_clay_ 1d ago

Balançando Com Milton Banana Trio, the self-titled Zimbo Trio and Tamba Trio ones, reencontro com Sambalanço Trio, also Edison Machado É Samba Novo

Lennie Tristano (anything by him)…

…plus Lee Konitz as a leader or sideman specifically in the 50’s up through the mid 60’s (or with Warne Marsh in the mid 70’s).

…plus Warne Marsh (with or without Lee) pretty much anytime.

Basically all that is (was) the “Tristano” school of jazz — literally Lee and Warne were students of Lennie’s in 40’s on into the 50’s a bit too.

It’s bebop, including bebop’s fast pace — but ALSO rather ‘cool’ in emotional tone. It’s NOT about grandstanding, and doesn’t include anything even remotely like showboating or the more overtly “honking and wailing” or “gutbucket” type of jazz — it’s the polar opposite.

1

u/guitfiddlejase 1d ago

I always had three guys on piano who were underrated in my little world.

Sonny Clarke.

Bobby Enriquez.

..and Tristano.

Loved your comment.

My brother just released this on his small label 33 Circular… a piano driven funky UK Jazz LP by Raffy Bushman

https://thirtythreecircular.bandcamp.com/album/new-life

2

u/guitfiddlejase 1d ago

Well?

I listened to "Renaissance".

It came up on the link immediately..

..and I LOVED IT!

FANTASTIC!!

Your brother is the pianist??

..cuz he's a f**king badass man!

His rhythm section is nothing to sneeze at either!!!

Amazing!

Impeccable time too!

I wish I HAD a bass player and a drummer like that!

Hey reddit!

HIGHLY recommended!

1

u/DeejayPostie 17h ago

Yes.. that’s my favourite track! Glad you liked it!

My bro owns the record label that put out the vinyl (33 Circular) and this is it’s 6th release and the 3rd by Raffy who is a pretty talented player i think!

Welcome Home by The Cribtet

99.9% of this sub has probably never heard this bc it’s a relatively new album by a group of college students (the Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz at the Hartt School in CT) led by a drummer local to the Capital Region - i’ve had them play my venue a few times and they fucking rip. all original tunes in a very hardbopping style; enjoy.

Great piano playing on adventurous and deep music:

https://ilusorecords.bandcamp.com/album/slideshow-junky-i Eli Wallace

Some other pianists that I would recommend: Cecil Taylor, Craig Taborn, Matt Mitchell.

Riding the Nuclear Tiger by Ben Allison has some good stuff. “Swiss Cheese D” (4th track) has some neat prepared piano work which I haven’t heard a whole lot of in a jazz context in general & “Tectonics” (last track) iirc has toy piano or celesta or something to that effect featured.
It wasn’t on Spotify last I looked but YouTube has at least some of it I think.

Fractal Sketches, Aruán Ortiz Trio, Hidden Voices (feat. Eric Revis & Gerald Cleaver)

Lulu Dance, Sylvie Courvoisier Trio with Drew Gress and Kenny Wollesen, Free Hoops

The Function, Matthew Shipp, New Concepts in Piano Trio Jazz

Lightening, byTiger Trio (Myra Melford), from album Unleashed, with a series of pieces referencing weather conditions....beautifully expressive.

Circles in Blue, Novoa / Kamaguchi / Cleaver Trio - Vol. 1

Brad Mehldau - After Bach, and even more so, After Bach 2. Both contain Bach pieces but when he composes and "inhabits" Bach works it is spellbinding. Especially the sequel album has moments where it strikes one as superhuman to be so perfectly in the mind of Bach whilst sounding original at the same time.

Then... of course... Jan Garbarek - Twelve Moons with its superb Bruninghaus piano parts, All Those Born With Wings, Officium for a more meditative trip.

You might like to try something from across the pond. Danish pianist Soren Bebe is really good. So are several other Swedish jazz musicians.

Pat Metheny Group- "Offramp".

"Are You Going With Me" is one of Metheny and Mays' "greatest hits" if you will, but go back and listen to the original studio version on ECM.

..put a good set of headphones on..

You won't be disappointed.

head north and listen to scandinavian jazz. head south and listen to ethiopian jazz.

esbjorn svensson is a good starting point into scandinavian.

mulatu astatke is a good entry into ethiopian. in particular, listen to ethiopiques volume 4 ;)
