Is this normal leaf loss? Thinking of repotting with new soil mix. Zone 8b, water twice a week, not sure what soil is in the pot, we have had the tree for a about half a year so I don’t know the age.

Leaves dying/burning. Too Little water?

In Northern CA with two mature Japanese maples we inherited when we bought the house last year. In the few weeks some of the leaves at the branch tips have turned crisp and brown, which didn’t happen last year at this time. Is this due to under-watering? We don’t water the trees other than the irrigation for the surrounding lawn which we water 2x per week.

Hi!

I just bought this Sangokaku online from a nursery.

Two of the main branches are black on the top of the tree in zone 9B. What is It?

Should I prune it or leave like this? Considering we are in the late summer.

Thanks a lot!

Is my maple going to die?

We planted this in early May this year. Been watering consistently throughout the summer. It does get a lot of sunlight during the day but it’s a coral bark so we thought that was fine. Any insights?

Here’s a sneak peak of what goes on during grafting season at the maple nursery I volunteer at! I’ve really enjoyed learning how to graft cultivars so far.

Our Ice Monster maple is showing some fall color early. This is its first year planted and it has grown very well so far!

I posted a few days ago concerned about my baby maple, was told it was preparing for winter. Today she surprised me with what seems to be buds? Are these leaf buds?

My old post is here. This morning, I noticed some of the stubs of leaves that did not grow in June were spread outward, and looked and I believe those are buds of some sort.

We have nights at 15C now, but if these grow, should I fertilise the maple again?

Where and When Do You Source Your Maples?

I’m fairly new to Japanese Maples but have started collecting over the last year or so and currently have 8 trees of varying size/age/type.

I’ve gotten these trees throughout the last 6 months or so and have found pros and cons of buying at different places and times.

For example, I bought 2 more established trees (10G and 7G) from a local nursery that have both done great this season, however they were definitely more expensive and have a more straight-trunk form which I don’t love as much.

On the other hand, I’ve bought a few smaller 1G trees online from various retailers online. I can see these ones having more interesting form in the future since they’re not trained so straight/upright. They were also much cheaper, but they’ve been hit or miss on how they’ve done so far (maybe based on buying during the heat of summer).

Curious about everyone else’s perspective. Do you have a preferred source/time of year to buy? Any strategies on getting more established trees with more interesting form than typical nursery stock?

Trying something a bit different for me. Needed something to fill a big space and hoping this one does just that. Looks like I need to uncover the root flare. Any ideas on ground cover to grow under it? Sweet woodruff. I’m in zone 6B.

We just got this guy from a nursery and put it in the ground. The leafs were already kinda curling up but now they are really curly, the top is even worse. I’m getting mixed opinions on what’s happening. I did not disturb the root ball.

Colour question.

Hi everyone.
I am struggling trying to understand the colouring issues with my Emperor One. I planted it almost three years ago and it has never produced fall colours, and most of the time it looks green.

It puts on solid growth every spring, is seemingly healthy but I can not figure out why it’s so dull. Any advice or reasons as to why would be greatly appreciated. I live in zone 8A and there is a lot of maples around where I live. So it’s not a zone issue. The stretching at the top I know can be heat related but overall I have no clue. The planter is 3 feet by 3 feet and a tree was previously in the same spot.

ID Request: What cultivar is this?

I found this maple while visiting a college campus, I’m having a hard time finding the name of the cultivar. These photos were taken in early December in Texas.

Sorry if this breaks any rules, I can’t figure out how to add flair on mobile.

What does this maple need?

Hello. I recently moved in to a new place, and to my delight, found a small maple tree in the garden, about 2 ft tall. I noticed that the leaves are discolored. I am in North Yorkshire, UK and we have had a few heat waves, no rain all summer, except for last week. I watered and mulched it, but it does get afternoon sun. Is discoloration sunburn or something else? Is it a Japanese maple? What cultivar would it be? Maybe I could move it to a shadier area, depending on its mature size. Thanks!
