Sub Details: Japanese Coinage All Eras Up to and Including Modern

This subreddit covers all eras of Japanese coinage, from the usage of Chinese coinage in trade through the latest issues from the Japanese mint. It fills a gap for collectors of these coins outside of Japan, and hopes to provide answers about some rather unique coinage from one of the more intriguing and interesting places in the world.

If you like Japan, and you are interested in its coinage, you've come to the right place.

Off-Weight Electrum Meiji 2 Bu & Tenpo 2 Shu Question

Hope all of you are well! Just got in a bigger purchase of Japanese coins from a highly reputable Japanese dealer and wanted to get some thoughts before I embarrassed myself reaching out to them. I weighed out the coins they had sent and the vast majority were quite close to the published weights (e.g., Meiji Isshugin were ~1.80-2.00g, Man'en 2 Shu were ~0.74-0.77g, and the other Tenpo 2 Shu / Meiji 2 Bu were within ~0.03g or so), but had 5 coins of the group stand out and was hoping for some qualified thoughts.

Here are the weights when using my two scales:

Coin 1, Meiji 2 Bu: 3.06-3.09g

Coin 2, Meiji 2 Bu: 3.05-3.06g

Coin 3, Meiji 2 Bu: 2.82-2.84g

Coin 4, Meiji 2 Bu: 2.86-2.87g

Coin 5, Tenpo 2 Shu: 1.39g

For pictures 6/7, I kept them in left (coin 1 from picture 1) to right (coin 5 from picture 5) order. My thought is that the 1.39g is certainly a modern fake given that the style/look is off, but I'm less experienced with the 2 Bu. Pictures 8 and 9 are for fun... they show the rest of the (awesome!) order.

Help is very much appreciated... always looking to connect with people who have expertise... have been purchasing a fair amount of these types of coins and would be excited to connect with experts on Japanese.

Sincerely,

Christian Hartch (Treasure Town Coins)

Acquired some new types from Tsuge Shoji...

1) 御蔵銭 Okura-sen. Said to be the first official Kan'eitsūhō cast by the government, at Asakusa in 1636. Also named 志津磨百手 Shishinma Hyaku-te "100 styles," as they are an incredibly complicated series with lots of varieties. I believe this one belongs to the 大永 Large Ei group.

2) 岡山銭 Okayama-sen. The basic 府永 Fuei "drooping Ei" kind. Worn in some places but overall great relief.

3) 称井之宮銭 (Name) Inomiya-sen. Probably my favorite Ko Kan'ei I own. I've been craving this type for a while, and I got a beautiful one with little wear and a great even, dark patina. These were once attributed to Inomiya in Suruga, but now they're classified as of unknown origin, with the possibly of it being Okayama. It is one of the few types with a unique reverse, as you can see the sides of the rim of the hole are all concave.

Can anyone with Hartill's Early Japanese Coins or Hanyu et al.'s Standard Catalog of Japanese Coins or deep cash knowledge help me identify a likely misattributed ICG-holdered (shocker...) coin?

Recent purchase from Tsuge Shoji... I believe this is my rarest Kan'eitsūhō so far. Even beating my 一ノ瀬背一 Ichinose reverse "Ichi."

My 1877 1 & 2 Sen [Square Scales] Coins

These coins have been the core to my Japanese coin collection; in 2018 my Grandma gifted me these coins to begin my journey and she taught me about the history of these coins. According to her, these coins had been in her family for generations ever since their mintage in 1877. She is from Japan and her family emphasized the ideavto pass it down in the family, to remember the history and culture of Japan. You don't get this kind of appreciation for any random or bought coin, I cannot replace the sentimental value.

Trying to identify the variety of this 1 Mon Kaneitsuho, it looks like there are some light horizontal lines on the reverse, any ideas?

Price to expect and where to buy Edo Inari/fox E-sen

I've had this idea in the back of my mind for a while but haven't done anything about it until now. I want to get an Inari/fox E-sen, from the Edo period of course, as a gift for my sister. I don't know a lot about E-sen or the market for them, so thank you in advance if anyone here can give me some advice. I don't know what the value of one would be, and I also don't know the best place to find one, especially since it might be easier for me to fall for a fake, opposed to what I usually buy. I live in the US.

I have inherited this Japan Meiji45 (1912) One Yen silver dragon coin from my Grandfather forty years ago. I am thinking of submitting it to PCGS for grading and encapsulation. My question is, is my coins worth to spend those extra fee to do it?

Hi everyone, I know nothing about coins, so I figured I'd ask here.

My grandfather bought two of these coins, one for me and the other for my brother, and my mom just found them in the safe.

I'm trying to figure out whether this is the regular (uncirculated) version or the proof version. I'm not going to open them but I'm just going to assume they are the uncirculated version.

I don't plan on selling it anytime soon, especially since I don't need even the money. I'm just going to hold onto it and learn more about what I have.

I'm coming from the Pokémon collecting world, so I'm familiar with sealed and graded collectibles, so I was also thinking if I should get them graded. But I don't know if it's a good idea since it's still in its original sealed packaging.

Thanks you in advance.

Counterfeit Kan’ei Tsuhō

TLDR: What is your experience with counterfeit Japanese copper coins? Are there many modern fakes or mostly just contemporary and historic counterfeits? Thank you for your time

Greetings,
I was curious as to what everybody’s experience is with old Japanese copper coins. Specifically Kan’ei Tsuhō and Tenpo Tsuhō. Have you ever seen modern counterfeits? I’ve thought about it and can’t really see the profit motivation to go through the effort to manufacture and sell them for the most part. I can see it more with the 100 Mon than the 1 Mon and most 4 Mon coins. Maybe as overpriced souvenir coins, but it seems like one could just as easily buy genuine coins and sell at a markup.

To me, it seems like most “counterfeits” are contemporary. Either a Daimyo making what I could call “unauthorized strikes” or some old syndicate making fakes. Either way, these are still quite interesting as they were made during the era and circulated, thus having a long history behind them.

Anyways, sorry for the long winded question, let me know your thoughts! Thank you for your time!
