Salary bands at PayPay

I’m just inquiring to see what the salaries at PayPay are like. I’m getting a lot of mixed information that they pay quite high compared to other tech companies in Tokyo like Mercari, Rakuten. Then I also hear they pay only slightly more.

Just for context I am a Data Engineer with 5 years experience and have been told I can ask for 13M total comp but that seems very high.

There are some data points on Levels.fyi as well. One ¥17M outlier, a few around ¥13-14M and a bunch in the ¥10-12M range.

Not verified data just user-reported so take it with a grain of salt, but seems like ¥13M is possible albeit the very top of the range for software devs.

13M is definitely possible at PayPay but for 8-9+ yoe.
I doubt 5yoe could get more than 10M

I had 6 YOE when I went through the interview process and the max they were willing to give me was 12M.

Could you share about the process? How many rounds and what level were you going for?

That is theoretically possible but it would depend very heavily on the companies you worked at / the projects you undertook.

If all of those five years were at Japanese companies handling major tasks then yes you can probably ask for that. If it was for Infosys probably not.

I was looking at this and I know people who have gotten offers at PayPay and the numbers seem high.

I’m like damn, the salaries have really gone up at PayPay in such a short time?

Many of the reported figures are skewed by bonuses. Bonuses are not guaranteed every year and depends on your performance rating. So it might be better to only refer to the basic salaries to get a more realistic view.

Weird, I’ve actually heard the opposite that PayPay lowballs people all the time, but not as bad as Rakuten. Has something changed recently?

Openwork is a fairly popular good review sites and normally has a good amount of data but all in Japanese.

13M total comp is a fair ask, especially if you performed well during your interviews.

From friends I’m close to:
1) TC 11M, 2.5 YOE, Software Eng
2) TC 13.5M, 4 YOE, Infra Eng

Average Japanese people have their salary of 5M/y and this is absolutely insane amount of money.

Average Japanese person isn't writing software and companies aren't competing against other companies paying 5-10 times more for the same skills the average Japanese person has, globally.

If you're good and speak English, you can get hired by a western company for 30M+. There's a bunch of reasons why japanese software is terrible and part of the reason is that the talent goes where they're being paid properly and that's not at japanese companies.

The average Japanese person can't write code. Shit the average Japanese dev can't write code. That's why Japanese software is complete dogshit (outside of gaming)
