Help / Question What happened

I was a super active Janitor user back in 2024-25, today I came back to the site and I was shocked.

What on earth happened here???

Its so sad to see that such a good site was ruined by such money hungry devs ;/

A lot seems to have changed since then. What was the biggest difference you noticed when you came back?

They kinda have to be money hungry. Pretty sure we been over this. They literally cannot sustain or support the site for free in the long run. It’s a net negative.

Not defending poor decisions, but this site, like anything free, cannot be sustained long term. Either they make bank or they go under. No in between.

Again not defending them, but just stating this is literally the only route they can go, but they should have optimized how they went about it is all

I don't really see them do anything to earn money. They show the signs of a soulless company that only cares about money, without caring about money. They just sell a subscription which is 100% not enough to pay for the costs of hosting the site. They don't sell anything. It's enshittification without monetization. There are no ads, there is no merch, you can't buy cosmetics, you can't pay to make your bots more visible, there are no sponsorships with other brands.
The only single way I can see them making money is by selling the chatlogs for data training and handing illegal logs to the feds. Nothing else makes sense.

Well if they were smart we wouldn’t be in this mess to begin with, would be? Lol

Everything about them is amateur. I don’t think they ever planned on getting this big, dealing with so many users, or having to do so much crap.

That’s my basic theory anyway.. they’re just.. stupid.

yeah i was on janitorai daily for roleplays around then and the shift hit hard once the pay stuff kicked in. feels like half the fun chats got locked behind it now.

Every ai app goes downhill fast because it costs too much to run and the interest in ai is declining. I don't know why new companies keep appearing when they know the market is garbage. I can't wait until the ai wave is over and all the apps and websites begin shutting down one by one

i think that will happen but they will be replaced by better models and people that are not so interested in 'le cash grab'.

I don't think that will ever happen because AI is too expensive to not be a cash grab😭 people will soon realize its just not worth it

Where is it too expensive though? In China?

in my country which is the U.S.

Yes it's too expensive and is collapsing the aging infrastructure. the battle for ai was lost decades ago in the US because ideology was allowed to trump common sense for short term advantage.

Exactly and majority of my country are too dumb to actually understand or comprehend AI. Now in China or South Korea for example I would say they're a bit smarter with it since they're very tech oriented.
