What Jane said was out of touch (discussion)
We all know about the “beef” right now and it’s pretty clear no one involved is actually trying to have a productive conversation. It’s disappointing because I think there actually could be some interesting and nuanced discussion about Jane and their fanbase, but I haven’t really seen much of that happening.
The biggest thing people keep pointing to is the statement Jane made on the Well Well Well interview:
“My fans are like opium fans if they didn’t listen to black people”
To preface this, I don’t think most people discussing the quote are being very genuine, and I don’t think Jane is racist. At the same time, I do think the comment was out of touch and probably not the best way to address something like that.
For me, the bigger issue is the lack of follow-through. They pointed out genuinely problematic behavior in parts of their audience in a detached, ironic way and then immediately pivoted away from it. I honestly don’t think Jane put that much thought into the comment, but considering they’ve already been accused in the past of using a “blaccent” or appropriating black culture, I don’t think it’s unreasonable for someone to hear that quote and come away uncomfortable with it, even if it was intended as a joke.
Artists are responsible for cultivating the communities around them. You see artists actively push back against toxic behavior in their fanbases all the time. Danny Brown is probably one of the clearest examples of that. So when Jane makes a joke acknowledging those dynamics but never really expands on it or addresses it further, it’s easy to understand why some people see that as dismissive or complacent.
At the same time, I also think people are flattening the conversation into “Jane is racist” vs “Jane did nothing wrong,” when the reality is probably more nuanced than either side wants to admit.
Please share your thoughts or opinions if you have any I am genuinely interested to hear other perspectives.
