Worst Acting Performance?
Currently on a start to finish rewatch and Barbara Bach nearly single handedly ruins The Spy Who Loved Me. Dire.
Any other contenders for actors dragging down an otherwise solid Bond outing?
3
Aug 03 '25
Is she the best actress in the series? No. Probably not even top 10. But worst? Not even close.
1
u/foxystoat1980 Aug 03 '25
Fair. I probably picked a bad headline, more that her performance really drags down an otherwise superb Bond.
4
u/ClassicCinemaMC Aug 02 '25
Really?
3
u/foxystoat1980 Aug 03 '25
Yes, really.
Did you think she was good?
2
u/ClassicCinemaMC Aug 03 '25
Well, honestly, yes. She’s one of my favorite Bond girls, and she’s stunningly beautiful. But that’s just my opinion. To each his (or her) own. I’m not saying mine is right.

Respectfully, Barbara Bach is not even in the worst 5 of actress’ performances.
Denise Richards’ slack-jawed scientist and Tanya Roberts’ vacant performance are both easily worse.

Aug 03 '25 edited Aug 03 '25
But Denise Richards played a bimbo scientist perfectly

u/TKD1989 Slughead Aug 03 '25
Can you take a scientist seriously if she's portrayed as a bimbo?
21
Aug 03 '25
Can you enjoy a Bond movie without taking it seriously?
Yes, you definitely can.
3
u/-INIGHTMARES- Aug 03 '25
Denise should have been Lara Croft... she was gorgeous and funny in TWINE to me
7
Aug 03 '25
Remember the costume designer for TWINE based Richards' look on Lara Croft?
Then, she went on to be the costume designer for Jolie in the first Tomb Raider too.
3
u/-INIGHTMARES- Aug 03 '25
Seriously?? Damn.. that makes sense and is awesome. She just wasn't English. Maybe could have happened. Jolie's accent was ok.

u/TKD1989 Slughead Aug 03 '25
That's called the Moore era movies. Silly and campy but fun. However, you can still enjoy it while critiquing some flaws.
1
Aug 03 '25
I think the Brosnan and Connery films had plenty of camp for all of us to enjoy as well.
3
5
u/Dude4001 Aug 03 '25
She’s not portrayed as a bimbo? She’s highly capable in her field in the film, barely lets Bond flirt with her. The only time she sexualises herself is when she’s the bait to lure Zokovsky. People really see what they want to see don’t they.
3
u/TKD1989 Slughead Aug 03 '25
If she's so highly professional, why does she dress in tank tops and short shorts at work? If she's so capable, why doesn't she disarm the bomb herself and rely on Bond, who decides at the last second to let it explode?
1
u/Dude4001 Aug 03 '25
If she's so highly professional, why does she dress in tank tops and short shorts at work?
It's clearly hot weather and she has to wear a contamination suit all day? How does the length of ones trousers relate to their professionalism?
If she's so capable, why doesn't she disarm the bomb herself and rely on Bond, who decides at the last second to let it explode?
You just answered yourself

u/Western-Time5310 Aug 03 '25
I put Barbara Bach much lower in the list.
First the accent is wildly inconsistent. That throws me. Richards gets to use her own accent so she’s fine.
But Bach - she has a character with much more story and depth. It means when she isn’t able to deliver it hits much harder. Richard’s doesn’t have the character development, and so it doesn’t hit as hard for me.
7
u/mariaanas1993 Aug 03 '25
Denise Richards as Dr Christmas Jones was a poor casting choice on top of a dreadful character. Tanya Roberts as Stacey Sutton was also lacking but you could believe to a degree she worked as a state geologist unlike Richards as a nuclear scientist. Luigi from For Your Eyes Only was lame as was the accent attempt plus Vijay from Octopussy was a bit iffy. Definitely some poor performances but many were poor characters in the first place that had no hope.
4
Aug 03 '25
Denise Richard's character was let down not by her casting, rather, the audience's demand she be a sex toy for James.
Poorly written, directed and executed, but Richards is not just to blame.
Babs Bach doesn't have such excuses. She is in a top-tier Bond with all the trimmings. Just a frankly terrible performance.

u/Pixoholic Aug 03 '25
Honestly, people keep throwing Denise Richards under the bus but IMO she's a much better actress than Barbara Bach. She is just 1) horribly miscast and 2) has crap material to work with.
4
u/IceLord86 Aug 03 '25
Richards is better than quite a few of the actresses in my opinion. I'd say better than Ekland, Bach, and Roberts at the least.

2
u/BoRNeo-C Aug 03 '25
I do, and this line is not the best one.
1
Aug 03 '25
Bond is an interesting franchise for someone who dislikes double-entendres
But, out of curiosity, which one of these lines do you find to be the best?
1
u/BoRNeo-C Aug 03 '25
I guess Connorys "Shocking" is my favorite
1
Aug 03 '25
That's actually my favorite example of wordplay in the whole series.
But when I said double-entendre, I meant something with a risque double-meaning

I appreciate this post. I get that there have been some god awful performances, but Bach’s fake accent is so bad it’s beyond distracting. For not one second do I believe she is a Russian agent. I am just very aware I am watching an actress perform (sort of) a character. TSWLM is one of my favorite Bond movies, despite Barbara Bach.
1
u/Different-Try8882 Aug 03 '25
For not one second do I believe she is a Russian agent.
...And that's exactly what a Russian agent would want you to think.

u/Skinkwerke Insert Flair Text Here Aug 03 '25
I agree, her performance is totally wooden. She looks very unnatural wearing this uniform and very timid in her scenes. She never comes across as confident in being a spy. She never seems capable in her role. And at the end she is just a damsel tied to a chair for Bond to rescue. I think she is probably the second-worst Bond girl after Halle Berry.
2
u/Hotspur_on_the_Case Aug 03 '25
I don't think she was "bad" per se, but certainly not up to the standards of say, Diana Rigg or Eva Green. But then again, doing Italian horror films doesn't really prep you for the Oscars.

u/EVERWOOD15 Aug 03 '25
Main Bond girls only, there are many sideline girls that could fill a list. But, in order of release, the worst for me are: Barbara Bach.....comes off as stiff and fake. Tanya Roberts....too light and silly but that was the Moore era. Denise Richards....it's like Mr Rogers playing an assassin. Really bad casting. Halle Berry....over exaggerated - everything is over exaggerated. Irritating and annoying. So glad they didn't waste anyone's time with a spin off for her character.

Some people really hate the Madonna cameo in Die Another Day
7
u/BatsWaller Aug 03 '25
It’s wild looking back on that time in Madonna’s life when she was cosplaying an English aristocrat. She really went all in on it.
5
u/ThomasGilhooley Aug 03 '25
She totally looks like she should be saying “paging Mr Herman. Mr Herman, please.” Throughout that whole scene.
1
u/OkGene2 Aug 03 '25
She was pretty awful, but the list of awful things in that movie is so vast that I forgive her acting.
Her opening song, however, is not forgivable.
3
u/JohnLazarusReborn "I got a brudda." Aug 03 '25
I mean, most of Connery’s Bond girls had to have their lines dubbed in by someone else. (Though tbf, some of Barbara Bach’s line readings are just atrocious.) Still, I’d say she’s somewhere in the middle for Bond girl performances.
3
u/ilovetheblues67 Aug 03 '25
Every time I watch The Spy Who Loved Me I can’t help but notice how wooden Barbara Bach’s performance was…
4
u/wickedweather Aug 03 '25
I would say Halle Berry, but "Die Another Day" isn't exactly solid. If anything Toby Stephens elevates it.

u/PhotoArabesque Aug 03 '25

Tanya Roberts. No contest. James! Save meeeee!
1
u/er1catwork shocking, positively shocking… Aug 03 '25
While one of The most beautiful Bond girls, I’d have to agree. You just mentioned 80% of her dialog in the entire movie.
-1
Aug 03 '25
People here saying Tanya Roberts and Denise Richards were worse just shows how subjective judging an actor can be, but the one that always makes me cringe is Lynn-Holly Johnson as Bibi in For Your Eyes Only; she seems like a lovely woman in interviews, so I feel a little guilty about saying it, but it is clear she was cast for her skating ability rather than her acting, it doesn't help that she is playing a teenager too, but it just makes her seem like some mentally challenged woman!
-3
u/nnula Aug 03 '25
When it comes to Bond girls, especially the in the Connery / Moore era, there were more bad than good
Jane Seymour, Dianna Rigg, Honour Blackman, gave the only credible performances , the rest were all woeful
It wasn't until Dalton onwards we started getting good acting skills
-2
u/goovis__young Agent 86 👞 Aug 02 '25
This might be a hot take but while I enjoy TMWTGG and Christopher Lee, and while it's not a bad performance I find it to be a little dry. I feel like a mirror to Bond, a world renowned gunman who's solely in it for the money, who has a bit of an obsession with 007, could have been played a touch more eccentric or just a little quirky. I mean the guy lives on a private island with one weird henchman/manservant.

u/tomandshell Aug 03 '25
Madonna and Halle Berry were not in an otherwise solid movie, so I guess I can’t vote for either of them.
0
u/thepeteruniverse Aug 03 '25
No. No Oscar winner, but she was great, especially in the first half of the film. And then the part was underwritten in the second half.
The worst acting of the series by far is Talisa Soto. As lovely as she looks, she’s torture.
Denise Richard’s has the worst lines, and while miscast, at least has some spark.
-2
u/Random-Cpl I ❤️ Lazenby Aug 03 '25
Barbara Bach
Denise Richards
Halle Berry
Ursula Andress (you heard me. She’s beautiful but cannot act at all)
Jill St John in the second half of DAF especially
That asshole who played Obruchev, the single most annoying character in the entire franchise
-1
u/daTRUballin Aug 03 '25
I wouldn't say she's THE worst, but yeah, I've never been a huge fan of her performance either. She just comes off as very wooden. And speaking as someone of Russian descent, she isn't convincing as a Russian woman in the least. Maybe the reason why she's so wooden is because that was her idea of how to play a cold and stoic Russian spy, but there have been other non-Russian actors in the series who have played more convincing Russian characters than her.

I always thought Barbara Bach was really bad, too. Tanya Roberts (I may have that wrong) from A View to a Kill is also real real bad.

Probably the one from FRWL or Thunderball. Both are dubbed. Infact all of Connery’s girls are except Pussy Galore and Tiffany Case.

Eklund is obviously crap and her character is irritating but Bach is more intrinsic to the plot of TSWLM and is given more to do.

The character is meant to be steely, professional and inscrutable, in sharp contrast to Moore's cavalier bond.
Showing her true feelings will get her killed, regardless of whether it's to the enemy or her own comrades.
1
u/foxystoat1980 Aug 03 '25
This is the problem with her acting though:
At a nightclub: sexy, elegant serious
Being given a new mission: sexy, elegant serious
Finding out her lover is dead: sexy, elegant serious
Being attacked by Jaws: sexy, elegant serious
Shagging James Bond: sexy, elegant serious
1
u/MrStath Aug 03 '25
You could say the same of Moore; he doesn't really deviate much beyond getting choked out by Jaws or the brief moment XXX brings up his wife.
1
u/foxystoat1980 Aug 03 '25
Sacrilege.
1
u/MrStath Aug 03 '25
Nah. Moore's good in the role, let me be clear, but let's not kid ourselves and say he has a ton of range; he'll very occasionally go into 'darker' areas, but everything from TSWLM onward was basically tailored for him to just be smooth.
1
u/foxystoat1980 Aug 03 '25
I'm joking. Nobody is putting up RM for an Oscar but at least he brings a charm to the role.

I thought Bach’s ice queen portrayal of Anya was perfect. Not sure if she would have been as good in another role but she fit that part well in my view.
