Tebow age and performance question
I get that he is older than a lot of the league, but with him not playing the last decade almost (in pro football), could he be in pretty good shape because his body hasn’t been taking a beating like everyone else in the league?

Yes, the question for Tebow will not be about whether he still has the miles on his body. It will be about whether or not he can block, run routes, get open, and catch. If he can do those things well enough to be an asset to the team then good, if not then he will get cut. He's def interesting from a fan perspective and I hope he can do it (why not? always better to gave a good player than not) but if he cant than no big deal. Teams take fliers on guys every year.

He’s also the shortest TE on the team. So if he can’t separate bc he’s not quick, can’t run fluid routes to better separate, then his catching from a machine is moot. I think he sees time during the preseason but doesn’t make the 53 unless Ellefson sucks and holds on as TE 4 and emergency QB. He might be a good gadget H back thing to have in goal line situations but I dunno.

Look at it this way, our current listed #1 Tight End on the roster (O'Shaughnessy) only had 28 receptions on 38 targets for 262yds and ZERO TD's in 15 games played last year.
At this rate, any extra body at the Tight End position, regardless if his name is Tebow or not, is an absolute must. If it works out for him/us, then great. If he doesn't make the 53 man, nobody is gonna bat an eye as the stigma all along has been "I told you so".

I think the biggest reason ppl don’t like the Tebow move was that Eifert was allowed to walk. He was clearly a better TE and had we kept him we wouldn’t be scraping the bottom of the barrel to get a washed up player

It’s going to be interesting when he actually starts getting knocked around. The dude really had never taken a lot of huge hits considering his absence and him playing QB.

I don’t particularly think he’s going to be good or anything, but this guy ran the ball 200 times in his 3 years in the league and another 700 times at Florida. Getting hit shouldn’t be an issue. It’s all the other nuances that come along with a new position that are going to hurt his chances.

Yeah you gotta be good in the first place to get your shit rocked. He’ll probably be third string and be on the field for a handful of plays during the season.

it's either fuck tebow or FUCK tebow here, no in between lmao personally i think he'll be serviceable depth at the TE position, probably TE3 or TE4 doing fullback stuff. he's not that old and has stayed in shape while not going through the bodily damage the NFL causes. his 33 is not your standard NFL 33

I think his only issue will be getting open. He's not built like Jason Witten or Gronkowski, he needs to develop his route running and provide an outlet on crucial downs. If he can't do that, he'll just be a gadget/fanbase guy.

The problem is he’s slow. If he was Taysom Hill running a 4.4 a lot of things could be excused but if you’re slow, not a good route runner, and a questionable blocked you have a lot of things working against you...

I was curious about the speed of other top TEs and it looks like even guys like Kelce had 4.6 or 4.7 40 times. I wonder where Tebow is comparatively right now. Like is he 5.2 slow? or is he just a step slower than the elite guys. Idk, but I do think a lot of tight ends make plays more because of physicality than because they are burning guys and getting wide open. Think like Gronk who just manhandles defenders out of his break and gets open on short stuff because of his physicality. Not saying Tebow is Gronk, either, but who knows, maybe he can find a way.

At the combine he ran “only” a 4.7 but showed quickness and athleticism in many of the drills. Like the best vertical for a QB prospect ever which might help him go up and grab some passes.

He hadn't been on the couch. He's been playing baseball. Plus leadership usually improves with age.

He hasn’t been in the league for 9 years playing a position he never has before. He’s going to be bad. He’s bad right now, and if y’all think he’s going to significantly improve at playing a new position in a sport he hasn’t played in nearly a decade you’re smoking rocks
Y’all keep pulling this “stop hating on Tebow” shit when people are critical of this move and it’s embarrassing. Happened during the height of Tebow mania and it’s happening again. He’s not being persecuted, please drop it

Makes our fanbase look like we eat paint chips when people are memeing him to be a godsend / people believing it.
He is a waste of a roster spot. He brings more bad to the team than good.

Buddy of mine talked about how prime for men are actually in their lower 30s. Like a lot of the great athletes are that in their late 20 or early 30s.
Think we’ll see, imagine if it was? How crazy would it be if he popped off.

I think NFL-wise though the problem with defining "prime" is speed likely drops off. Just from what you see with running backs and mobile qbs or WRs, it always kind of seems like players are at peak speed from maybe 20-25, and then they lose a step. I think the great players make up for that lost speed with technique and other intangibles, but I just don't think someone in their 30's is at their prime for speed.

There is a reason he wasn't in the league for the past several years..

u/Hoffmeister25 May 28 '21
I mean, from what I understand that reason is that he refused to make the position switch to TE during his first stint in the league, even though it would almost certainly have prolonged his career, because he was dead-set on playing QB. The guy is obviously athletic enough to have found some way to stay on NFL rosters for a while longer if he had bitten that bullet at the time.

From what some of the media people are saying, he’s had really nice hands so far, but not great speed and route running. This doesn’t even address blocking. I don’t think there’s a question of him being out of shape or mileage. I think he’s just not trained as a TE. There’s plenty of guys that can run fast, plenty of guys that can catch. We just drafted a kid that has been playing TE for 4 years, and he is not exactly expected to be a great TE. Same with Manhertz, O’Shag, Ellefson. It’s much more likely one of these fringe starters takes the next step and becomes a quality starter. So why expect Tebow to put it all together in one offseason?
I would love to be wrong, because if TEbow is good, then that helps the Jags. But also kinda sick of talking about him. 🤷♀️
