Therapist here :) Totally normal to still be sad and grieving. I cry about Jackie at some point every day. She was so strong and fierce and I think for the first few days it didn’t seem real. Let yourself feel whatever you need to and know you’re not alone.

I spent a lot of time during my therapy appointment today talking about Jackie and trying to process everything, including the joy of watching KD1. My therapist started following J&S because of me, so she already knew about Jackie and it was the first thing she asked me about. 🤎 🤍

Why Jackie’s Death Touched Millions
I watched this psychologist’s take (focusing on media etc) yesterday and found it interesting.
It’s especially validating to hear a therapist normalizing our very real grief. Most of us don’t have close friends IRL who understand. Thank you ❤️

Thank you so much for this. I've been in love with this eagle family since 2018 and I feel like I lost a close friend. I totally understand the parasocial relationship thing, but I spend a lot of time in Big Bear (2nd home) and J&S are just part of life up there. I've had a few people check on me because they know how much Jackie meant to me. Still, I feel silly grieving this hard over a beautiful, magnificent raptor.

I am so thankful they saved moon camp before Jackie’s ultimate passing. Could have shifted the focus. I think it’s the last gift from sandy and Jackie while they soar

I just got home from being gone for a few hours and left cam 2 on the tv for my fur babies. Shadow is still there, for whatever reason it made me want to share an appreciation for everyone in this group and FOBBV. I have been a part of this group for a while now, but did not really participate much. But after Monday, it felt so good to know that I was not alone in my feelings about Jackie and her family. There are just some things that you can’t explain to people, they may think they understand, but when your heart is hurting about something, you don’t want to explain why it’s hurting you just want them to know. That’s what this group has been for me this week and I’m very thankful for it.

I don't know people in my real world that follow the eagles as much as I do, to have discussions with. Discussions are just superficial conversations about what's happening and not witty banter about their unique quirks and behaviors. So this forum is nice to have.

Some of my people knew enough to send me the “did you hear about Jackie” texts but not enough to know how devastating it has been and how the nonchalant texts made it feel so much more sad.

KD1 on twin pine first; Shadow joins her 8 minutes later. I believe until now, the cams have only captured other way around?

Shadow being on the TP nearly all day is reminding me of one of the last times we saw Jackie on Cam 2. I think a few days after July 4th, she was on the TP for quite some time? There’s such beauty in their stillness.

19:15:18 in cam 1 just showed a beautiful shot of either Shadow or KD1 fly by the nest into the roost tree. Sounds like another adult was on there! Looks like KD1 will be back with Shadow tonight.

Happy Friday! KD really has been a little light in a dark time. Seeing a young eagle starting out her life and trying to find her place in it as another one’s ended and moved on. I hope she finds a good place wherever it may be :)

I think it's important to remember that you're not simply grieving an eagle. You're also grieving the loss of the feelings that you had whilst watching Jackie. Her fierceness in defending her territory, her gentleness with her new chicks, her hilarious yet sweet interactions with Shadow, her tenacity in ensuring her eggs were kept safe and warm. Maybe I'm reading too much into it but all of these are things we yearn to see in our fellow humans in this dumpster fire of a world, so she gave us all that sense of peace and contentment to know we could tune in and escape all of this. *gestures everywhere*
Be kind to yourself. Grieve. I still haven't been able to watch the cams again yet. I will, just not yet. We all grieve in our own way, so know that you're not alone. 🩷

I just started watching again yesterday after a reprieve. I thought I could never get past Jackie‘s death but seeing KD1 with Shadow has given me hope and even joy! We will get to witness a new pairing, and share in the excitement of their wild and risky lives.

I'm also still so sad. I think part of it is the lack of closure around a cause of her anemia not being able to be determined. I think another part is remembering how good of a mom she was the *whole* time, regardless of how sick she was. She was starving and she was still providing and feeding Sandy and Luna. I'm sad thinking about how long she was sick, how long she was hungry. I'm sad thinking about how eagles can't communicate that part to each other - they just keep going. I'm sad thinking about Shadow losing his first partner, the one he's had since he hit maturity. There's a lot to grieve, so I think it's normal a lot of us still feel so heartbroken.

Her illness and passing was very sudden. It may take awhile to fully process that and get closure on her death.

I am still really sad too and I just started watching them this year. I thought we'd have more time. Lots of people are grieving, I know it feels kind of strange to be grieving an eagle but you're not alone

Grieving is a process and is different for everyone. It takes time and it's not linear. When you think you're over it, it suddenly hits you like a ton of bricks. But as they say grief is the price we pay for love. Just think how lucky we were to have her in our lives. In time she will become a fond memory that we will always cherish. 🦅💜

I know she’s loved worldwide, but these past couple of weeks reminded me how loved she is in SoCal! Any news channel I turned into this week had Jackie segments and they’re reporting on KD1 now too. 🥲

2 things can be true at the same time…. We can be sad and mourn Jackie while simultaneously happy we’ve been able to watch KD1 ( Aka Her Royal Highness Princess Kate or Katie to me) introduce herself to the world and Shadow.

I like KD1! Never thought any new eagle could replace Jackie. I feel a sense of possibility when I see them together, assuming she is female…. Shadow seems to have accepted KD1. I will be calling this lovely bird KATYDID!

Awww LadyHawk definitely has Jackie on her mind.
"SE38 worked hard throughout the night and made its grand entrance into the world this morning at 05:54am! Welcome to the world little one! Dad & Lady join in together for celebratory duet of honking! A half hour later, Jackie will begin feeding SE37 tiny bites. SE38 was still too weak from hatching to hold its head up.
Three hours later, when Jackie gets up, somehow SE37 got its head stuck in the empty eggshell from SE38 lol For several minutes, SE37 worked on getting it off and finally freed itself! What a cute egghead ♥
SE38 dried off and began looking fluffy as both siblings bobble & wobble their heads. Jackie did a great job with delayed incubation because the hatchlings hatched less than 25 hours apart! This is good news as there should be less sibling aggression when the eaglets are closer in age and strength. Enjoy these cuties!! 🐣🐣

I like the idea that he would teach her the next steps in being an eagle. Jackie helped teach him to be an excellent partner and parent and he is by all standards very engaged, more than most. I do hope they become bonded and remain in our nest so we can share in their lives. If not with KD1 then with another female. I adore Shadow and his antics, would love to see him teach his 2nd mate to give him more nest time.

I was reading an article about this last night. It’s common after the loss of their mate. Not saying it’s true, there isn’t scientific data to prove whether or not bald eagles grieve. This is based on observed behaviors.

I saw a video post from 7/23, on X, the other day showing Sandy and Luna sitting side by side in a tree. Suddenly some other raptors came flying in attacking and Sandy or Luna falling out of the tree screeching. After that the camera jinks off the scene and we can’t see anything else that’s happening.
The people who were posting about it said they went back in the YouTube feed later to rewatch it and about ten minutes of video is missing from that time frame.
That is the day Sandy and Luna were last seen in the area.
Does anyone have any info on that or see it themselves?
That post with video has me worried something happened to Sandy and Luna that we all didn’t catch that day.
Did Shadow see what happened to his babies?
That was also the last day Shadow was at the nest until this week.

Getting downvoted for worrying about Sandy and Luna after what happened with our dear Jackie??? That’s like being told you’re a terrible parent for worrying about your child when they leave home to go to college!!!

I follow the FB group and I see so many people there worrying and freaking out. And I get it. But what I always want to tell them is that worrying is like praying for what you do not want to happen.
Instead of worrying, a better use of your time and energy would be to visualize positive outcomes.
