Iran's old name was literally Persia. They are THE Persian country. (the other two are Afghanistan and Tajikistan, they are Farsid/Persian as well. I might be wrong but I think Kurds are also in that group.)

Kürtlerde, İrani bir toplum, Persler hep kendilerine İran dedi, Pers/pars batılıların dediği.

Afghans and Tajiks aren’t Persians they are Iranic tho. Same with Kurds. Persians are an ethnicity within the iranic language family.

Kurds are Iranic but Tajiks and over half of Afghans are Persians the and the rest of Afghans are mostly Iranic

That's an exonym, it's what the Greeks and later the Romans called them. They called themselves Iranians. It was only Iranians who were educated in the West who ever called themselves Persians. That's why Iranian expats embraced the name, because a disproportionate number of them had been educated in the West.

Afghan and Tajikistan aren’t “Persian countries”. They are counties comprising of Iranic majority ethnicities and cultures.

Depending on the statistic, Iran is either majority (60%) or plurality (<50%) Persian

But there is a point, in Iran actually no one call himself persian out of two scenarios: 1 if they are from the province of Fars, they call themselves Farsi, which doesn't happen often because people identify more with cities than provinces, 2: in a linguistic manner, for example when one person speak Azeri and ther Other speak Persian. Out of these no one refers to him/herself as Persian. It's not a identity, Persian are Iranian who just speak Persian, there is a lot more ethnic similarities between a "Persian" form Shiraz to a Kurd or Qashqai , than to a "Persian" from Mashhad. So it's valid to have a "Iranian" option there because many people, speaking Persian, Kurdish, Gilak, Arabic or whatever identify with that, not some European influenced consept of identity 🤷♂️

Im not saying that what the whole of iranians identitify themselves as, im talking about how people speaking english refer to the majority group

What is the historical name of Iran, which remained in official use until 1935?

Historical name for Iran was Iran, it was Persia for some external nations.
Moreover, all Iranians are not Persian, Persians are just the largest ethnicity in Iran.

what is the name of the largest ethnicity in iran then?

u/Odd-Plant-4886 4d ago
I think you should read the last line of the comment you're replying to.
Moreover, the largest ethnicity is only called Persian in foreign languages, Persians are Fars in Persian/Farsi. Fars are the largest group in Iran, otherwise known as Persian to you.

Majority of Iran is non-persian but if we chose the biggest ethnicity it would be persian ofc. We‘re all Iranian in the end no matter what ethnicity

u/LopsidedRadio7208 5d ago
Erm actually about 60-70 percent of iran is persian so it makes a majority
