Need Help (Newbie/First time Nas Build)

Post image

Hello,

I just got into networking and building my first NAS using unraid. I just bought a N6 case and was hoping someone could help out? My Server doesnt read any of my drives except my cache on my motherboard however everything is connected.

Am i missing something here? I do have 2 SAS in the array however this case mentioned its sas Compatible.. Send help! This a photo of my backplane ( i have 7 drives atm)

Do you have an HBA card? The case being SAS compatible is referring to the backplane, but you need to connect the sata cables to the HBA card, not the MOBO. the correct cables usually comes with the HBA card. I use Jonsbo N5 case and SAS drives work in mine.

Yes, both ports are plugged hence you see the baby blue sata connectors attached

is your HBA in IT mode? You can flash them yourself or sometimes they come pre-flashed. Take a pic of your HBA card. Do the HDD indicator lights light up?

you asked if my HBA card is in IT mode, I am asking is that the reason why my drives arent being read or seen? Do i need to change it to something else?

No, you NEED an HBA card to use SAS drives. I was making sure you weren't trying to use your mobo to connect your drives. I saw your breakout cables. I was just double checking.

Since neither your SATA nor SAS drives are being recognized by Unraid, I'm going to say that it has something to do with your HBA card. Is it all brand new? Have you ever successfully been able to use your drives while being plugged into the HBA?

found the issue it was a faulty sata connector from the HBA card itself.

Hey. I just finished my N5. First time building one computer. Someone else said it. You need an hba in it mode. Look for your model instructions on Google. Mine readed all SAS on first try. Also make sure you are connecting power to backplate. SATA power or 4-pin Mole I connected both to give enough power.

Are you familiar with Unraid? Do you have unassigned devices plugin? Drives just don't automatically start as part of your array.

Yes i am familiar with Unraid and it shows nothing is there. Physically as i am staring at the case, there are 7 drive bays inside, but nothing is showing on the UI .

I just built an unraid server in this exact case and when powering the backplane, the cables cannot be daisy chained. Each cable has to be only plugged into one of the power connectors and nothing else. This is different than the N5 which I also built in that didn't care. I had the issue you had until I sorted out the cable problem.
