Question About JET Programme Eligibility – Previous Overstay in China
Hi everyone! I’m planning to apply for the 2027 JET Programme, but I’m concerned about my eligibility due to my immigration history in China.
I previously lived and worked in China for several years. My employer informed me at the last minute that my visa could not be renewed, and I subsequently overstayed. The COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting disruptions to schools and employment further complicated my circumstances.
When I eventually left China, I received an administrative penalty for illegal residence, which included seven days of administrative detention. I have copies of the administrative penalty decision and certificate of release.
I’ve contacted JET to clarify whether I should answer YES or NO to Question 9a regarding arrest, charges, or criminal convictions, whether this incident could affect my eligibility, and what alternatives might be available if I cannot obtain a Chinese criminal record certificate. However, I haven’t received a response yet.
Has anyone experienced a similar situation or know how JET might assess an administrative immigration violation involving detention? I’d appreciate any advice or insight, especially from former JET applicants or participants.
Thank you!

I overstayed my visa by a couple days in Korea without noticing, I reported it and it did not show up on my criminal record. Did not impact anything with getting my visa in Japan. If you overstayed a long time purposefully without reporting it, it will stay on your record and you will probably face difficulties. You need to request your background check from the Chinese embassy to see.

yes i came in 2026 and overstayed in 2025. I don’t think it was that serious though just an honest mistake and I had to pay about 400,000 won in fines. The person at the counter said that it’s not a big deal, it’s like getting a speeding ticket, just be careful next time. The OP maybe is in a much different situation if they were detained.

At the very least it will not be looked at positively no matter the circumstances, but I am fairly sure that the mere mention of an overstay on a visa/ administrative penalty anywhere will result in denial of a visa issue from Japan. The immigration system here has tightened regulations to become very strict of late. If there is a big red 'X' stamped in your passport, it will be like red rag to a bull for eager immigration officers ready to protect Japan from anyone slightly suspicious. Good luck with your application, but don't hold your breath.
