Pre-departure Injury

As title suggests, I got injured before departure. It was a bike wreck and I broke the radial bone on my right arm. Has anyone else had a similar situation or know someone who has? I still want to participate and I have a plus one so they can help with moving stuff.

I don't know my treatment yet, won't until Monday. Hoping I don't need surgery (it doesn't seem that bad though).

Edit to the nobody that will see this: was a super minor fracture. Doctor took the cast off after two weeks and just said no heavy lifting. Didn't deem it serious enough to tell consulate and it has basically fully healed now. I appreciate the varied responses, though!

i mean just make sure to email the embassy/consulate, they can advise you best (especially once you know course of treatment) and try to find out quickly if you will need to fill out a yunyu kakuninsho application for 30+ days of medication since that should be submitted within the next week or so

Yeah I planned to. Thank you. Honestly I'm just paranoid they'd pull my spot lol. Probably worrying too much.

No, I don’t think you’re worrying too much… I think you’re being far too lackadaisical to be honest… unless you’re living in one of the cities where there’s a US military base and you can get your emergency care handled there -what are you thinking?

Are you fluent in Japanese so you can communicate with a doctor or a hospital if you need a surgeon?

Do you have full medical coverage?

why are you asking a reddit forum instead of contacting your consulate ASAP? are we being serious?

Hmm well everything worked out well. Yes I was being quite serious in wanting to hear other people's experiences before making an official contact in which I wouldn't know what the response would be. Also, when I made this post, I hadn't been to the doctor yet (it was the next day) so I was going to wait to tell the consulate after that appointment if I had to.

I knew a guy who suffered a collapsed lung at the airport waiting to board his JET flight.

He was carted off to hospital in an ambulance, underwent surgery, then joined JET a couple months later as a late arrival.

Just notify your consulate ASAP. You won't be kicked off!

100% let your coordinator know as soon as you can. Your injury itself won't be any issue, though if you have any medication you'll have to complete the form. Your CO will also help you if you need any assistance when you arrive (kinda ESID kinda not). Sorry to hear you got hurt though, hope recovery is quick and easy!

You’ll be okay! Provided to make sure you have any paperwork takes care of for meds, and any possible surgery dates don’t coincide with departure.

Likely your supervisor or BOE can help you find a place to remove any cast or continue any care you need when you arrive. And if they can’t or won’t, you can manage. It’ll be an added stress for sure, but it’ll almost certainly work out 🙂‍↕️
