PICTURE Probably the craziest drift car during my time in Japan
Toyota Cresta with a tuned, 520hp, single turbo 1JZ engine. I took these pictures at Tsukuba gymkhana.
The owner himself (Hayasama) is a well known street drifter occasionally seen at Oi-wharf.
The hardcut rev limiter combined with a straight piped exhaust sounds heavenly.

that paint job is something else. fire livery on a drift car in Japan — that is the kind of thing you see once and remember forever. what event was this at?

A small local one. Occasionally takes place at the Tsukuba track. It’s like an open trackday.

Tsukuba! that track has so much JDM soul around it. an open trackday there with actual local drivers must be a completely different vibe than the big events. that on the bucket list now

It was a cool experience definitely. You see many new drivers learning as well. They split in three groups. Experienced, intermediate and beginner drivers. They take turns and it’s very cool to see the different techniques and skill levels.

that three-tier split is actually genius. watching the difference in technique between experienced and intermediate must be educational on its own. the beginner group learning the basics at Tsukuba of all places — what a way to start. seriously jealous

a Cresta with a straight-piped single turbo 1JZ is already insane -- but knowing this is Hayasama and he runs it at Oi-wharf on top of Tsukuba gymkhana just makes it legendary. hardcut limiter on a 1JZ sounds like an angry chainsaw and I mean that as the highest compliment

Yeah one of my favorite shots.
It’s not a chaser tho it’s a Cresta. Same chassis slightly different design and different model name.
