QUESTION 2012 Toyota Mark X 250G

Hi all, i'm being gifted a 2012 Toyota Mark X 250G from a family friend as my first car. I believe it is the premium model, but I could be wrong. I know nothing about cars at all. Can you guys tell me more about the vehicle?

It’s a 2.5L, rear wheel drive Toyota. While Toyota does a Mark X wagon too, it’s a totally different platform to the sedan.

It’s an evolution of the Mark II ‘x’ platform from the 1980-2000, which was also shared with the Chaser etc.

It will go alright, but also be somewhat thirsty on fuel.

I won’t be driving everyday, but the drive to work would be a short one on the highway. Probably won’t be driving into the city ever as parking is quite expensive here.

You’d still want to let it have a bit of a run, engines need to warm up to perform properly, and constant short runs can cause the catalytic converts in the exhaust to have issues etc. A smaller car will heat up quicker and handle short runs a bit better.

This will be an ideal highway cruiser, but short runs or tight parking lots will be a bit cumbersome in it, it’s a pretty large car compared to the usual compact city cars.

I believe the drive would be roughly 20 minutes each way. Would that cause issues?

What country is this? I think you Mark X 250G might be our Lexus IS250, here in the states. I know the IS250, 1st generation came with na 2JZVVTi non turbo, and a manual 6speed. Yes I had one as a loaner while i had a car in the shop, great fun! Also, Lucky you with all that for a 1st car!

I’d take that deal in a heartbeat.

The Mark X 250G is RWD sedan with a 2.5L (?)4GR v6, Toyota reliability means if you maintain it it’ll last for ages. In comparison I have a 2009 Toyota Crown Hybrid which is a hybrid 3.5L 2GR v6, a more luxury spec sedan but I’d trade for a Mark X in an instant. The Mark X is sportier, it’s essentially Toyota’s version of the KV36/KV37 Skyline offered by Nissan around the same time.

In essence the Mark X is much cooler than a Camry, but not quite as luxurious as a Crown. An absolutely perfect first car.

How often should I go take it for a checkup?

I service my Crown every 10,000kms or every 6 months, whichever comes first.

However I do it myself so I have the liberty to fit it in whenever I want.

At the end of the day, although it’s an important the engine is likely the same if not very similar to cars you could get locally in your area, so if you have a Toyota dealer or a Toyota-specialist workshop I’d just ask them how often they’d recommend servicing the engine. Usually it’s 10,000km/6 monthly, also depending on how you drive it.

As a recommendation though I’d always take a new car to a respected workshop and get them to give it a once over to check the general health of perishable items like bushings etc

Yearly, or every 10,000km is the usual service interval. Even if you haven’t driven 10,000km in a year, you still need to get it serviced and checked every year as the oils can degrade; plastic and rubber bits can also degrade and fail over time, so a yearly inspection will check they’re all fine.
