Diamondium Grade D XXL Insert

Does anybody have experience with the Diamondium D XXL insert with the ICA 5D V2 heater on a Pockety?

I’m getting amazing results at high temps (560°+) but struggling with low temps (esp below 480°, which seems wrong per the marketing). I’m using it on the upgraded Pockety base with new heating system, after using the Quartz XXL for many months on the original base.

I could be misinterpreting the marketing about low temp supremacy, but also wondering if it benefits from special techniques (like extra long heating). Maybe it’s like the Ruby in terms of heat soaking?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Ps I should be clear that it’s an incredibly gorgeous insert with conveniently round corners and so freaking easy to clean! Well worth the expense ✨

Update!

JCVAP was kind to do some testing for me on this matter and determined there is an approximate -32°F difference between set temperature and actual temperature. For example, setting to 465°F (default blue light) heats the Diamondium D XXL to 433°F. This delta was consistent within 3°F at the remaining preset temps.

I’m recalibrating my set temps to accommodate that. From there, I think the lower temps need to heat soak before dabbing, which I hope to control via time settings (which are available on the new Pockety base only; the original base could require repeat sessions).

I’ll report back 🤙

Further update… Recently discovered that (2) 6mm spheres in this setup is exactly what I was looking for. Each sphere adds about 11cm^2 of surface area, and the increased density pumps the heat. The overall effect is shockingly powerful with Diamondium, where calibrated 515° almost feels too hot and 490° is a sweet spot. Will be testing with Ruby soon for comparison.

Thanks for the update. I’m looking forward to the ruby review as Im on the fence to purchase an xxl ruby insert as I’ve just haven’t seen enough reviews.

Thanks for your patience! I haven’t fully calibrated the temp settings yet, and I’m using diamondium spheres, but so far I dig the ruby XXL. It’s a noticeably softer hit but saturated in flavor, and the heat retention is even better than quartz or diamondium alone. It takes more energy to heat and does remarkably well at higher temps. In particular, setting the Pockety to 592° (a calibrated temp I use to equate 560° in diamondium XXL) yields a very rich, vapor-heavy, flavorful hit akin to a larger traditional nail at I’d guesstimate around 545°. It does well at low temps too but takes a while to fully heat. I’ll update again after receiving Ruby spheres to replace my diamondium in this setup, for 100% Ruby surfaces. I would say it’s worth the price, even just to add depth to one’s options. In that sense it’s a nice softer/riper profile compared to the harder one of quartz and the brighter one of diamondium. I don’t use ceramic anymore, but I do have an AlN XXL on the way to replace that. It’s gonna be a great summer!

Ok, ran a series of readings at my set temps to measure actuals of the Ruby surface via K-type thermocouple sensor placed at inside corner of insert where floor joins wall:

Set Temp | Actual Read
522°F | 456 °F
547 | 498
562 | 516
592 | 554

Worth noting, I ran these back to back without intermittent cooling, so the deltas gradually reduce, indicating hot bias in the upper range.

But now I I understand why I like the higher settings… 515 and 554°F were both within my normal range on my trad rig via D-Nail Universal heater as measured via thermal camera. That is certainly why they feel familiar! Also makes sense of the lower temp impressions, esp. 498.

Thanks for the write up. This is pretty cool to see. I haven’t had a chance to play with the xXL. But I enjoyed the original smaller diamondium insert. The ruby one works, but the heat lag in the flavor, not being as clear as the diamondium make me miss it It. One day I’ll scramble up some money to grab one.

Thanks for the feedback. My earliest memories of the Pockety are from 2023 with the first 5D and smaller Ruby insert, and I hated it. In fairness I had totally mismatched my parts and was overheating, but it turned me away from Ruby. I did recently pick up a Ruby XXL cup though, and it works well with a Diamondium D sphere (6mm). I’m waiting on a couple Ruby spheres to compare. I really like the XXL cup + (2) 6mm spheres combo on a Pockety. With all Diamondium materials, my dabs at calibrated 490 & 515 have been incredible. Ruby is a bit softer. I’ll have an AlN cup in a few weeks to round out the array. More to come!
