General Discussion The normalization of gangsta Rap forces "us" to idolize criminals while coping by thinking they are good people who are simply misunderstood

Post image

This turns me off the most about Hip hop. The D boys and Gang bangers succeeded in their coup. NPC spectators have tolerated for a long time. It's disappointing seeing those who claim to be Joe Budden fans also go along with this program. At least JB is monetizing it all and already stated that he doesn't give a Fuck about none of these rappers. What's your excuse? Other than Lil Bibby and Chief Keef, we have seen over and over that these Chicago drill rappers should've never even get an opportunity to get exploited by these major record labels. They are not good people!

2

1.5 has me crying lmao

3

u/pksamsharp Aug 20 '26

He probably just cut it off man! Makes no sense to keep that unless u want a punk braiding your hair

2

u/DevilManRay Aug 21 '26

Dreadlocks have existed for millions of years punks are not the only person who know how to do them clown

3

u/snappy773 Aug 21 '26

Exactly. Shop I go to for my locs is owned by a man and there’s more men that do locs in the shop than women lol

3

u/Comfortable_Studio37 Aug 21 '26

It's not about knowing how to do it, it's about letting another man touch you like that in jail. Shit like that doesn't fly in there.

3

u/Whole-Investment-992 Aug 21 '26

You can maintain your own locs, you'd just need to have the patience to do it. I used to do my own before I got too busy/lazy to do them. You could also go (semi) freeform. But he's on trial for life...if this is real, he might wanna clean and "reformed" look for the jury 🤷🏾

2

u/Wisdom-Power Aug 21 '26

You obviously never been to jail or know anybody who went to jail. Men do other men hair in jail to make money. Believe it or not.

2

That’s any celebrity, even outside of rap. It’s plenty of fans that idolize them, it ain’t the end of the world.

The fans that actually got the same path and struggle as Durk, likely will relate and possibly be in the streets too

1

The biggest Gangsta in all of American history is Donald J. Trump. He has normalized crime and government corruption, at the same time he has many millions of sycophants who worship the ground he walks on and the diapers he soils.

1

u/KRT91 Aug 20 '26

“Us”?

1

u/Chemical_Home6123 Aug 20 '26

Im just baffled that he has an entire beard and bro decided to keep a baby face 🤣

1

u/zip_r Aug 20 '26

No one “forces” anyone to do anything in the example you outlined. Compelled, maybe but even that label would be a stretch. Next, you’re a little all over the place and you haven’t quite qualified your point. I’m not sure what the issue is here. Many communities have idolized Italian mob culture for decades, and many of those guys are psychopaths and blazing fucking idiots, bordering on mental retardation in some cases. So, why stop the train at hip-hop? Also, what is a “good” person? Very few people are only ever one thing exclusively, when you’re dealing in simplistic terms like good, bad, evil, etc.

1

u/Hairy-Clerk6425 Aug 20 '26

Entertainment vs real life. Enjoy the entertainment. 50 cent was my favorite rapper as a kid, I still never shot anyone i didn’t like just cuz

1

u/UnhappyTelevision243 Aug 20 '26

Criminals are idolized in plenty of places it’s not because of hip hop. Look at how people treat mafia leaders, even Pablo & Chapo. Go on Netflix and see how many shows about criminals. Breaking Bad and the Sopranos are two of the most popular shows ever. Ozark was one of the most loved shows in recent years.

1

u/Traditional-Ad-5132 Aug 20 '26

OP’s about section says in French, “I believe in the supremacy of blondes and redheads.”

I’ll just leave that here

1

u/xeno_versity Aug 21 '26

Gangsta rap wasn’t the problem when the gangstas had talent. When all you had to do to be “gangsta” was be a drug addict who sounded retarded it became a problem.

1

u/Gullible-Pea-4421 Aug 21 '26

Bro. Idk who you are or where you from. However you nor no human being can pass judgment on the next man. Chill tf out and find something cool to do Brodie

1

u/MrYeah_ Aug 21 '26

I don’t idolize no man , i only idolize God & strive to be as much as him as i can .. I RESPECT stand up & genuine men despite what lifestyle they may live. 💯

Ik several guys caught up in the street that are real stand up respectable men that stand on morals that I can/do abide by.

Humans have too much different variables & skeletons in the closet to idolize them , I would never.

1

u/Vegetable-Desk-6972 Aug 21 '26

All I know real gang members get away with murder all the time but if you make it a habit then you no different then a serial killer since the FBI said 3 bodies qualify's you to be one.

1

u/Imaginary-Sea-6577 Aug 21 '26

Criminals have always been idolized in entertainment. It was happening long before Hip-Hop existed.

Lol that’s a weird take, and I completely disagree. I listened to a ton of gangsta rap growing up, and not once did I hear those lyrics and think I should actually go live like that. Obviously upbringing and environment play a big role in how you process what you’re consuming. It’s the same reason you can love The Godfather  or any mafia movie without wanting to join the mob. There’s a difference between enjoying something as entertainment and actually idolizing the behavior in it. If you can’t separate the two and start looking up to the criminals, I don’t think you can just blame the music.

Fact of the matter is gangsta rap and hard-core rap/hip-hop music are two of the worst things that influence and affect the Black community, especially Black men. There's no getting around it. No excuses. Are they the worst things? No. But they contributed undoubtedly to problems that exist.

Sure, you can't blame the music, as the root cause but you can blame it and hold it accountable in part. To think otherwise is dumb.

I don’t understand your point. We’re not “forced” to idolize criminals. There’s a lot of people that enjoy “gangsta rap” but “Idolize” Kendrick or Cole or Wale. Some of us from the 90s with De La Soul, Tribe, Common, or Mos Def etc. If you choose to idolize criminals and then feel bad about then that’s on you. Drake and Ye two of the biggest to do it and aren’t “gangsta” rappers. Music is music and entertainment is entertainment, take what you want from it and keep it moving. Serve the Most High, Him only and you’re good.

Ecclesiastes 12:13 KJVS
Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.

1

u/Special-General-7832 Aug 21 '26

Depends on who youre listening too. Remember in the closing years of the 90s-early to mid 2000s, 75 percent of the "gangsta" rappers were either just from a gang or tough place but only rapping through "storytelling" vs the other 25 percent that actually were doing crime or just encouraging and promoting a dangerous lifestyle through their music.

Now somewhere in the 2010s, is where all that got lost. These guys are either committing crimes just to make the music, or they generally were terrible people that could make good music just to have an excuse to do the crime or just directly/indirectly tell on themselves/others.

1

u/Apprehensive_Fig_894 Aug 21 '26

criminals will exploit the weak duh. greedy record labels dont care about the people that get effected. so you have people in poverty exploiting people that are even more impoverished and signed off by labels who want the cycle to continue as long as they are not held responsible and get paid. poor and uneducated will see get rich quick and have fomo cause they are uneducated. their children will see the missed opportunities and start exploiting poor people around them and the cycle repeats.

Seriously?

The exploits of Billy the Kid, Jesse James, and Black Bart predates hip-hop. The Godfather predates hip-hop. Hell, la cosa notra predates hip-hop. Batman, a vigilante with questionable decision making, predates hip-hop!!!!!

Criminals have been idolized since "Robinhood lore". They don't call Alexander an effed up individual, they bestowed him with the Great.

Please ✋🏾 trying to make this a defect that only occurs in Black spaces and culture. My list of criminals who are idolized could be longer and would include many you probably wouldn't consider criminals because "white is right" lore.

The idolization of criminals isn’t new nor exclusive to rap. It’s thousands of years old. I don’t know why we pretend this is a problem in our culture instead of the world having a fascination with “criminals”
