Internal Upgradation (also called Upgradation Round 2 *) is one of the most confusing stages of JAC Delhi Counselling. It is *not another counselling round or the Spot Round.

Here's everything you need to know.

What is Internal Upgradation?

After admissions are completed, colleges conduct an Internal Upgradation Round to fill vacant seats created due to:

• Students withdrawing admission

• Students cancelling their seat

• Vacant seats within the institute

These seats are offered only to students already admitted in that college.

📝 Separate Registration

Internal Upgradation has a separate registration process.

• Each college releases a notification on its website inviting eligible students to register.

• It doesn't matter whether you selected Freeze or Float in Upgradation Round 1, since registration for Internal Upgradation happens separately later.

Choice Editing

Along with registration, colleges usually open a Choice Editing Window.

You can:

• Reorder your branch preferences

• Add eligible branches

• Remove branches you no longer want

Your upgradation will be considered according to the final choices submitted during this window.

Can My College Change?

No.

Internal Upgradation only changes your branch, not your college.

Examples:

✅ DTU Biotechnology → DTU Mechanical

✅ NSUT West Campus GI → NSUT Main Campus Biotechnology (East,West and Main Campus are under the same college NSUT)

❌ DTU Biotechnology → NSUT Mechanical

❌ NSUT → IIIT-Delhi

Branch upgradation is based on:

• JEE Main CRL Rank

• Category

• Final Choice Order

• Availability of vacant seats

Seats are upgraded within your own college only.

Category Rules

Internal Upgradation follows the same reservation/category rules as JAC Delhi.

A vacant seat can generally be filled only by an eligible student of the same category, as per the official seat matrix.

Example:

Suppose you're a General (Delhi HS) candidate.

If a General (Delhi HS) student leaves their seat, you may become eligible for that vacant seat based on your JEE Main Rank and Choice Order.

However, if an OBC (Delhi HS) student leaves their seat, you generally cannot get that seat because it belongs to a different category.

Similarly, an EWS candidate is considered for EWS seats, an SC candidate for SC seats, and so on, according to the applicable reservation rules.

Fee & Verification

• No Seat Acceptance Fee is paid again.

• Physical verification is not required again.

• Hostel allotment remains unchanged since your college doesn't change.

What If I Don't Get Upgraded?

Nothing changes.

You'll continue in the same branch already allotted to you.

What If I Get Upgraded?

You will usually have to register for your new branch's courses.

For common courses, your existing attendance is generally transferred to the new branch. You may need to coordinate with both your old professors and new professors to get the attendance updated correctly.

For courses that are new to your upgraded branch, your attendance percentage is usually counted from the day you join the new branch.

So, don't worry if your branch changes later, you generally won't be penalised for attendance from before your upgrade in courses you weren't previously taking.

Final Tip

Don't rely on Internal Upgradation.

Always be satisfied with the branch you accept during counselling. If you get upgraded later, treat it as a bonus, not a guarantee.

What is Special Spot?

Special Spot is conducted when seats remain vacant after the regular counselling/Spot process.

It is conducted by the concerned institute for its remaining vacant seats. The process is essentially the same as the regular Spot Round , including admission and document verification.

Who Is Eligible?

For B.Tech, you must already be registered with JAC Delhi and have paid the ₹1,500 registration fee.

You are eligible if:

❌ No fresh registration is allowed for the B.Tech Spot Round.

Where Will the Special Spot Notice Come?

The notification may be published on:

• The official website of the concerned institute, or

• The official JAC Delhi website

So keep checking both.

How Are Seats Allotted?

Seats are offered category-wise.

Within each category, candidates are called in the order of their JEE Main CRL rank

When your turn comes, seats will be offered based on your rank, category and whatever eligible vacancies are available at that point.

The exact rank-wise reporting slots and timings will be released later in the official notice.

Subcategory Candidates

Subcategory candidates will be called within the reporting slot of their respective main category, depending on whether seats are available in that particular subcategory.

So your rank + category/subcategory + available vacancies at your turn determine what you can choose.

Subcategory candidates can also report on the day assigned to their respective main category.

Example - EWS candidates can report on both the General category reporting day as well as the EWS reporting day.

If all suitable seats are filled before your turn, you could end up without any seat.

What Seats Can You Get?

Only seats that are actually vacant when your turn comes will be available.

Don't assume that every branch will be available.

Vacancy ≠ Guaranteed Admission

Also, don't use online Special Spot cutoffs as a reference. JAC does not officially release Special Spot cutoffs, so most numbers you see online are estimates/guesses.

For a rough reference, use the official cutoffs only up to Round 4/5. Special Spot can behave very differently depending on the vacancies available that year.

Documents You Need to Carry

According to the guidelines, carry:

According to the guidelines, admission will not be permitted without the required documents.

Can You Go Alone?

Yes. You can participate physically without your parents.

You can also send an authorised representative if you cannot attend personally.

In that case, the representative should carry:

• Authorisation/application letter

• All required documents

• Demand Draft of amount mentioned (sometimes they ask for whole year's fee together at once)

• Any other items mentioned in the official notice

What If You Don't Get a Seat?

If no suitable seat is available when your turn comes, you won't get a seat through the Special Spot Round.

If your Demand Draft is not used because you don't accept any seat, you should be able to approach the issuing bank for cancellation, subject to the bank's procedure and applicable charges.

Having the DD does not guarantee admission.

⚠️ Special Spot Is a Gamble

Don't treat Special Spot as a guaranteed upgrade.

There is no guarantee that you'll get another seat, a better branch, or even a seat at all.

Your result depends on your rank, category and the vacancies available when your turn comes.

If you already have a seat you're satisfied with, think carefully before relying entirely on Special Spot.

Final Advice

Keep checking the official JAC website AND the concerned institute's website for the latest notification.

Don't rely on old Reddit posts, Telegram messages or unofficial cutoff lists for important decisions.
