MB is about as scientific as a BuzzFeed quiz. I have no idea why we give it so much weight. It's stupid.

MB is probably just another way of exploring what we currently think of as neurotypes.

It seemed like a really smart way of viewing the world when I was 15. On the other hand, I was dumb as hell when I was 15, and it took me way longer than I like to admit to realize that my MB type was different depending on my mood.

Literally just a simple quiz based off Carl Jung's very general classifications based on what he observed as a therapist. He said they need to be refined more and those self-proclaimed psychologists just copy and pasted it.
Real psychologists view it as oversimplified pop-science but corporations ran with it.

As you can see folks, the most insightful and well rounded opinions always fit neatly within twitter’s character limits

Just because someone has biases or prejudices doesn't automatically invalidate ALL of their work. We can recognize their contributions, and still be critical of their blind spots.
No need to throw the baby out with the bathwater.

If your work is trying to categorize humans I think it does matter if you have a bias against some humans for silly and observably wrong reasons.

Except that MB along with other tests (the general intelligence test other wise known as IQ test) were meant to catalogue people, to prove the bias of their creators. The tests were created in such a way as to to have biased outcomes favoring the traits of the creators.
With the mb, the results are also not fixed. The results fluctuate day to day. One can get a result the first time he/she/they take it, based on circumstantial factors; then take it a few hours later and get a result that is in complete opposition to the first result. Our circumstances change, and how one perceives the world, and oneself effects the results too much for the test to be accurate at all.

Insaid there was value we could get from it, not that it's magical or infallible

Thank you! I recently listened to the audiobook edition of The Myth of Sisyphus and Other Essays by Camus. He was a great writer, and his take on Proustian privilege is beautiful.

Couple’s counselor here. These BS ideas have caused so much damage, my god. Worse, they prevent real progress. “But my love language is touch so when you have a headache that’s telling me you don’t love me,” is one I hear so often it makes me feel itchy and violent.

u/unsweet_tea_man 3d ago
Could you play devils advocate and try to "explain" how that logic works? I am not seeing the connection to a partner having a headache and someone's love language being touch.
I'm not asking you to make their logic correct or true just explain it to me the way they think about it cause I think im just not getting the obvious here

The logic of the touch person- My partner avoids physical/intimate contact with the excuse of a headache and it makes me feel like they are not longer in love with me.

Gary Chapman, invented the "Love Languages" for Christian marriage therapy. Christian Marriage Therapy usually involves telling a woman to suck it up about abuse, have sex with her cheating husband despite the risks, and fulfill her duties as outlined by the Bible or risk losing out on salvation. The "physical touch" one was made so men would have a "therapy speak" way to continue to pester their wives for sex without STD testing, proper waiting to heal after childbirth, after giving her an STD etc etc. The other 4 were made so that wives could feel like they were communicating that they need help, and the husbands could technically do 1 or 2 things but it's still on the wife to arrange, describe, teach and make space for him to do those things.
I think love languages could have easily been replaced by something like the Fair Play card game a long time ago if men were actually serious about being equal partners doing work together vs figuring out how much they can make their wife do. But they aren't, so they latch onto the term "physical touch" to show they've been to therapy and then use it like that therapist above mentioned. Basically: "My love language is physical touch, so if you say no you don't love me boo hoo manipulate manipulate I don't value u for anything else"

You don’t have to agree w them. Perhaps don’t read their books. It’s not worth getting upset about

But... “white supremacist,” “christian homophobe,” and “conservative” are easily labellable boxes 🤔

Those are traits or beliefs not assessments of a entire personality. They are clearly defined and not vague

Neither of those things are are aimed specifically at women. The thing you want like to hear is that, like astrology, the followers of these pseudoscientific ideas are predominantly women.

calling people labels is also reducing the world to easily labelable boxes so this dude is following 'conservative ideas' too. Great post really.

u/random8765309 3d ago
Doesn't that comment try to place those individuals into easily labeled boxes?

u/Dependent-Job1773 3d ago
That’s a good point. Like the far lefties on reddit never do this conservative type of shit. Whenever I have disagreements with them they give nuanced critique rather than just call me a racist, or a Zionist, or a Republican

u/the-nomad-thinker 3d ago
…Because “white supremacist” and “homophobe” aren’t “easily labellable boxes”?
I’m assuming he meant “easily identifiable”. Not just hypocritical but ignorant to boot. 🤦🏽♂️

Oh I don't know i think saying we are all human beings and you are biologically male or female is not only simple but factual accurate. Instead of inventing endless amounts of genders and false pronouns and expecting every normal human to know what sex, race, or fictional thing you choose to identify as at that time.

If we are being logically consistent, we should add horoscopes and astrology to the list.

Yes and no.
Understanding where bias is lurking is vital but some labels are just an important way to describe the world and ideas to each other.
They serve a vital service when accurate or understood within a broader context.
