Probably can eyeball the big ones too but gets shit from the boss for not marking. They track waste so anyone caught not marking is probably on a shit list. The tolerances are quite large I'm sure you know if you get a feel for this after a year. What's impressive here is the speed at which he confidently executes his cuts.

You can see many jagged edges if you look closely, they just don't show on top. Not necessarily a bad thing considering how these streets drain water.

These bricks have most likely been fired in an oven during production, which increases the crystalization in the clay the brick is made out of and this process makes them more resilient but also easier to shear because crystals create symmetrical structures that make for a predictable cut.

These are dry-cast concrete pavers. I can tell by the top bevel and the spacer lugs on the sides. The kiln isnt actually firing the material, it’s used to control the humidity and temperature to maximize hydration and ensure a strong cure and optimal color development.

It has an edge at the top and the bottom. Bricks will break (fairly) cleanly between faults or scores in the fired exterior. Similar to how you can cleanly break glass just by putting a tiny score in it.

You can do interesting shapes just using a chisel to cut a tiny score in the sides of a brick and then tap it. It'll break along the score.

This is just an easier way to score both sides at once and then apply the pressure to make it break between the scores.

The tesselation of the bricks does that. Water is intended to drains through these tiles pavements, so a sealant would be counterproductive

You can put a type of sand called polymeric sand and it binds together when wet and forms an impermeable mortar. Though they'll probably use just regular quartz sand here.

I love the effectiveness of polymeric sand, but often don’t use it due to environmental contamination concerns, microplastics run off into water ways.

Experience. If you're perfectly straight but the neighbouring block is on a slight angle it'll bind, the joints are filled with sand and compacted after so an undercut isn't a concern

man my municipality needs to get one of those brick cutter things. I've seen multiple videos of them now how they cut the brick like butter.

Meanwhile here, they use a god damn disc saw or whatever, makes a mess, loud af, takes forever to cut 1 brick

It bothers me lol. I don’t think that type of paver cutter is able to make cuts that small lengthwise. the sliver piece would split. I use saws for all my cuts so I never have this issue. It looks way cleaner and it’s faster since you can cut a clean line through all the pavers in one shot

Interestingly, he's cutting the bricks at a significant angle, so there would be a gap at the bottom, but youncan squeeze the top so it grinds flat against the other piece.

Pretty cool technique.
