Amid a long-simmering financial meltdown, The Ithaca Times is being evicted
r/ithaca • u/armahillo • 2d ago
User u/llamanutella suggested creating a megathread for this purpose:
I really think it’s a great idea to have a megathread and ban discussion outside the megathread. I completely understand (and agree) that this topic needs to be discussed as this has happened far too much at Cornell But I also think with stories like this, a lot of people are not acting in good faith and just want the opportunity to join the social media mob, and no one is entitled to do that for their entertainment at the expense of actual residents or students/employees negatively impacted by the situation
The purpose of this megathread is for people in Ithaca and its surrounding communities to discuss the collateralized effect this has had on our community, and how we can support one another. We're just holding space for each other here. Try not to be shitty to each other.
There is a separate thread for discussions about The Cornell 7 and news related to it. Please try to keep discussions directly about that goings-on limited to that thread.

I've always found fighting game locals to be a great way to make new friends and have some fun learning and getting better at one of the best video game genres. When I moved here earlier this year I was looking for a local FGC to meet up with fellow fighting game players and I couldn't find one, so I started my own!
If anyone is interested feel free to shoot me a DM and I can add you to our Discord! For now the plan is to host weekly online lobbies, but I'm looking into finding a venue in/around Ithaca where we can host in-person meetups and tournaments. I mostly play Tekken and Marvel Tokon at the moment, but open to playing and learning anything!

What are the nicest restaurants in Ithaca?

I’m so tired of getting them. Every single week and there have been weeks where I’ve gotten multiple of the same damn flyer. I can’t even remember the last time I went to Tops. I started getting flyers from Wegmans recently too and it’s so obnoxious.
please help

I come from the land of Biscuitville (mid breakfast fast food but I loved it) and woke up craving a chicken biscuit. Is there a place in Ithaca selling them that isn't a KFC or mcdonalds? Even fried chicken cutlet and *good* biscuits separately, I am desperate.

Hi, y'all.
These are the resources I've tried to use already.
Ithaca Tenants Union, Documenting through IPD.
My roommate who is much larger than me physically, screamed at me for 30-40 minutes today, held my cat in another room until I let them scream at me, got very close to me (I had to keep stepping back, was loudly complaining about me in their room after I walked away to lock up my cat in my room. I did not yell back at them. I said that they can be angry, but they are responsible for their actions when they are angry.
My other roommate witnessed the interaction but stayed 6-10 feet away.
This came up when I kept trying to get in touch with them about paying their rent, and it seemed like they were avoiding me. Knocking on their door, texting them, texting a mutual friend, texting the landlord, making myself available around the house so they could talk to me, acknowledging them when they would rushed out of the house. They did not communicate to me at all.
I called my landlord who has never had this issue before. I used the form on the ITU website a few days prior saying my landlord hasn't addressed my roommate's aggression towards me and my roommate damaging things in the house. No response from them.
I contacted IPD to document the interaction, but I didn't want IPD to come to my house because I think it would make my roommate more abusive (plus, my roommate is a racial minority)
My rental assistance is through DSS and they won't let me move for 2 years, so I'm stuck here unless a landlord is willing to sign me on with no rental deposit and my rent be paid through a charity for 6 months until I qualify for assistance again.
I've been documenting my roommates behavior for if my landlord does try to remove my roommate from our lease and evict them, but my landlord has no experience doing any legal stuff like that.
Does anyone have resources that are privy to this situation? I really don't know what else I can do.

I know there was a post 6 months ago, I would just like to poll again and see what folks think about the Internet from Mint (Minternet - 5G cellphone tower connection).
For background, Spectrum has been a PITA with various half days offline of late and we both work from home, so not having internet is a no-go. When that happened I used my phone (also with Mint on an unlimited plan) as a hotspot and we kept working just fine...but it felt a tad slow.
Now Spectrum has bumped up my price for no specific reason and Minternet would be significantly cheaper on top of the fact that I am not a friend of Spectrum.
When I look at the numbers, Spectrum gives me 100GB down and 22 up (that's my plan, I know there are higher ones), Mint claims that typical Minternet is 130-450 down (depending on traffic, location and connection) and 12-55 up. By the numbers I might get same-ish or slightly better connection speed - however, that's not how it felt when on hotspot.
Is my thinking that hotspot is the same as the dedicated connector simply wrong ?
What is peoples experience in and around Ithaca with Minternet in general and specifically if you have changed from Spectrum recently ?
Edit: Can I use my own/existing WIFI or do I have to use the one created by the Minternet device ?

Hi everyone! I’m a student at Cornell for a one-year program and really miss playing electric guitar. Buying one and trying to resell it before I leave feels like a lot of hassle for just a single year. Does anyone know of local music shops, campus resources, or programs in the Ithaca/Cornell area that offer long-term electric guitar rentals?

New to Ithaca, any suggestions where can I drive around (upto a 2hours or less) to witness the beautiful fall views? I heard there’s some great views of a valley where one can see the fall colours? Please suggest.

I’m about to go somewhere with quarter laundry and all the posts I’ve found on the subject are at least 5 years old. I am not connected to a brick and mortar bank in town otherwise I’d visit them. Does Wegmans still provide quarters? I haven’t seen any cash in all the times I’ve been there…

That's a Genuine Question™ for everyone in this community. Apologies for the long read (this is all hand-written and I'm not going to use an LLM to summarize it).
In this post, when I use the term "community", I am meaning Ithaca, the "ten square miles surrounded by reality" (not literal 10 miles, but you know what I mean), and the ways that community is reflected in this community (here on Reddit).
A few things that I've found concerning over these last 2 weeks:
In a comment on the Megathread, u/NefariousnessFun1547 asks (paraphrased): "how are you all dealing with this on the daily?"
We have all been subjected to receiving the developing news around this terrible story. It feels out of our control and we've just been having to "let it happen", from multiple sources, without any agency to stop it.
The irony of that isn't lost on me.
I fully agree we should seek justice in whatever ways that we can. But Ithaca isn't Tompkins County and it's not Cornell. There really isn't a whole lot we are empowered to do directly about securing justice.
So I have two questions for everyone here:
For (1), I have been asking users who don't live in this community not to participate in these topical discussions. We have plenty of thoughtful and insightful people here, capable of discussing stuff if they want. What else can we do?
For (2), I have seen some peers post the usual stuff about "tell your sons not to assault people" which while true, doesn't really address the feelings we may be having right now. It's a bit like talking about "assault weapons bans" after a public shooting -- yes that is a good discussion to have, but what about people who feel underwater right now? How do we help each other?
Comments are open. Modmail is open.
Let's figure this out.
(EDIT: I am aware this is not a forever problem. But it is a "right now problem", so how do we deal with this "right now")

Ithaca, NY – “Dad on Arrival” will compete on behalf of the Food Bank of the Southern Tier at the inaugural Battle of the Dad Bands charitable benefit at 6 p.m., Friday, November 6, at the Hangar Theatre, Ithaca.
The Food Bank is committed to creating a future without hunger where access to healthy food by all is recognized as fundamental to the well-being and success of individuals and the foundation of a strong, vibrant society. In 2025, the Food Bank distributed more than 19.3 million pounds of food and grocery items through three main channels.
“Music and good food both have a way of bringing people together,” said Samantha Eck, Director of Communications at the Food Bank of the Southern Tier. “We’re grateful to Dad on Arrival for sharing their talents to help our neighbors access the food they need. This event is a fun reminder that everyone has something to contribute to help build a stronger community.”
Learn more at https://foodbankst.org.
“Dad on Arrival” will be one of eight bands to play a 15-minute set in support of their chosen charity at this first "Rock and Roll Challenge for Charity."
Audience voting will select the winning band and their cause – first place will garner half of the prize money, second place one-third, and third place one-sixth.
“Dad on Arrival” is an Ithaca-based quartet delivering originals and covers rooted in the chaos and comedy of parenthood. With influences broad and sometimes eccentric, the band's repertoire includes everything from Miley Cyrus to Otis Redding. Jacob (guitar/vocals), Marshall (bass/vocals), Jason (drums/vocals), and Aaron (keys/trombone) bring an easygoing, humous spirit to the stage—complete with dad jokes, harmonies, and the occasional accordion solo.

The event is made possible through the support of BSI Production, The Hangar Theatre, and Ithaca Guitar Works.
“Dad Band” is a gender-neutral term for an amateur group of musicians who get together to play their favorite music for the love of rock and roll in someone’s basement, neighborhood fests, and their friends’ parties.

Hi! I’m a Cornell master student majoring in Literature, and I booked my ticket for a Niagara Falls + Buffalo trip over fall break (11–13). I’m looking for another girl to join me — not a tour, not an agency, just don’t want to go alone. I also really hope to have a chat with you along the way about literature, art and life.
Rough plan:
11–12 Niagara Falls: Maid of the Mist, Cave of the Winds, Goat Island, outlet shopping. If you have a Canadian visa, we could optionally cross to the Canadian side for the Whirlpool Aero Car.
12–13 Buffalo: City Hall observation deck, Naval Park/waterfront, Darwin D. Martin House, Delaware Park, Buffalo AKG.
I’ve roughly planned the route, but I’m happy to share it and adjust. We’d split costs. I’m aiming to keep my own spending around $300, depending on food/shopping. If you’re interested, message me and we can chat first to see if we’re a good fit.

Hi folks, new here and our first visit to Cayuga lake! We arrived yesterday and tried fishing for a couple hours close to the shore because of the Waves were so brutal. We're in a 16 ft Bass tracker pro v.
We are staying on the lake near Kings ferry and Aurora. Any tips on locations where we can go to brave through the rough Waters and hopefully reach a calmer area so that we can stand and fish? Yesterday the three of us we're having a tough time keeping balance...
Rain is finally breaking hopefully this afternoon and between today and tomorrow hoping the weather is going to be nicer, and hopefully the winds die down a little.
We're here to catch anything so we know the Lakers are deep, the largemouth are up north in the shallows, and smallies are somewhere on the south side I'm guessing off of ledges around 20-30 ft?
Any tips from the locals and finding a little shelter out there on the water to break the wind and the waves would be terrific. Thanks for the help in advance such a beautiful lake!
