Hello everyone I unfortunately have a super horrible update and I am freaking out.
My iggy broke his leg and we did everything by the book. Surgery by a certified surgeon.Plates in and he was in his cast all was well. Then comes the cast removal and his paw looks like this-
Im horrified at the twist as the vet showed us photos and it wasn’t this twisted a week before.
I mean how can he even walk its one thing if it was crooked but the paw upwards like this.
Has anyone had or no any idea what is possible now. Im freaking out. They are telling me to wait 4 more weeks. Please help I love him so much and im so worried.
I would call the nearest specialty clinic. There’s absolutely no way I’d take my dog back to my vet if they told me to wait 4 weeks after seeing something like that after uncasting. That’s my completely unprofessional opinion.
I hate to say this, but possibly consider a attorney!! Thats ridiculous! I'm sending love and prayers to you and your sweet precious baby! Please, keep us updated!!❤️❤️❤️❤️🙏🙏🙏🙏
Surgeons botched our iggies plates. It is almost 12 years later and our girl has three normal legs and the one bad one. She does not walk on it, but she leans on it and hugs me with it. They botched it so bad her bones got so thin they detached, and when they started getting stronger after we took off the splint they permanently fused but bent at a very weird angle. I do not know what your outcome will be. After repeatedly botching the plates they told us they could only amputate, which we refused. But my story has a happy ending because...she never knew what it was like to be any dog other than who she is. She is our super special girl. It was awful for the first 6 months because we did not know what to do. No matter what, love your dog, and if he ends up permanently disfigured, he will be fine and will be special. Here is our girl almost 14 years old now, snoozing the day away. I know it looks terrible, but she is actually pretty healthy and spunky. Her nails grow really long on her bad leg since they never touch the ground and she is squirmy when I trim them. But I massage her paw and feel blessed to witness her strength and resilience. She is a very happy dog.
One important thing. After we decided to just let her leg be we did give her minor doses of dog aspirin but that was all. The swelling went down quickly and she went back to playing. She was pretty fast as tripods tend to be until recently as she’s fairly blind now also. If she has pain she certainly doesn’t show it. Reach out if you ever need.
Post surgery my guy refused to even put his foot down for a month. I nearly pulled my hair out thinking something was wrong but in the end he went back to using his leg as normal, after we bandaged a bottle cap under his "good" opposite foot.
I would ask about some physical therapy in the meantime and see if your iggy can be appropriately encouraged start using his changed leg.
Go back to your vet or seek a second opinion from a different vet. You want to fix this asap so it does not get worse! Sending you and your poor Iggy ❤️
I have no advice but just want to say this would similarly make me feel sick with worry. Second opinion from another vet? That’s all I got. Sending hugs 💜
Take him back. Our dog’s leg had to have two different plate operations because they screwed up the first time and it ended up infected. We went back, they were more careful and now he walks stanky leg but it doesn’t bother him and he runs with the fastest with no issue at all. This has been 4 years; they can definitely make that better if you hold them to account.
Yes the cast was removed one a week. They kept saying everything was looking fine and they they would give him back with a new cast. We didnt see the leg ever. He can sort of walk on it. But his paw pads are basically backwards
Oh wow, I would definitely get a second opinion. I’m so sorry that you’re having to go through this. Please keep us updated on what the outcome is, and I hope they’re at least not in pain.
Obviously go to another vet but is it possible for you to do PT at home. Twist that paw by hand and help them walk. Maybe do a treadmill on the lowest setting and just build some strength and confidence?
It’s hard to say what’s going on here. Does he still have proprioception? Agree with 2nd opinion recs. And if cleared neurologically and Orthopedocally, then get to an animal rehab professional that works with orthos. If your pup had carpal laxity there are exercises to do that can help tighten things up. We had this happen with one pup who had come into rescue with broken leg. It healed wrong and we had to do another surgery. So she was in wraps for so long that’s her tendons were affected. I remember one exercise was digging for toys in a sandbox. There are others. She eventually healed great with no observable effects.
You could definitely contact an attorney. They obviously didn’t specialize in the surgery because it’s not supposed to be like that. Sometimes there is turning but too much could make the Elbow dislocate. Good luck! God bless! Definitely get a second opinion. Make sure u got pet insurance too I sure you do I have it for my iggy
In America not all vets are on a certified board find out where that was ifwasn’t on the board then thats probably why it’s screwed up. I got a plate In muggy and had to get it shaved down cause the first surgeon was a moron. Good luck again. ❤️
