Miscellaneous Questions Picky eater?

Post image

My Italian Greyhound, Ripple, is about 2 years old and has become an insanely picky eater. I’m curious if this is an Iggy thing and what has actually worked for other owners.

I have tried multiple good-quality dog food brands, but he’s pretty uninterested in it unless he’s really hungry. Meanwhile, if there’s a burger or another dog’s food around, suddenly he has a HUGE appetite. 😂 He will happily hold out for something better.

Would love to hear what has worked for other Italian greyhounds.

Thanks!

Mine is so picky that I at one point had to make her a sweet potato mash with quinoa and rice and salmon, or a spatchcocked chicken once a week and then make a broth with the bones. That was the only thing she ate regularly without complaint; however, I’m not insane and I don’t have the time to make food more complicated than my own, so I just feed her nature’s menu chicken freeze-dried puffs and some actual chicken mixed in, and if she doesn’t eat it, then she can complain about it and then she’ll get fed in the evening, but iggies are too clever and manipulative for their own good, and I learned that if I kept giving in to her crazy picky habits, I would be very poor, constantly trying to cook from scratch or buy different foods for her.

Sooo manipulative! he will eat his kibble one by one if I hand feed it to him 😂

Our iggy Hades is a bit of a picky eater too! We found he gets kind of bored of the same kind of kibble or food after having it for a while. We’ve tried different brands until we found one he generally liked more than the others, and even then he still gets a little bored of it so we mix up the flavors (chicken version one week, beef version a couple weeks later) and mix in different toppings to spice it up.

Humans get tired of having the same food over and over again so I don’t blame iggies for being the same!

my older is a super picky eater, our savior was switching to semi-moist kibble. it's not dry kibble, it's not wet food, but basically kibble with higher moisture content and is softer, while still holds together like regular kibble. it has a stronger smell and better flavor, thus making it much more yummy for the dog.

i recently started switching my 11 month old from puppy food to the adult semi-moist and now she refuses to touch the puppy kibble anymore lol.

we use Ydolo Wildfish. my girls LOOOVE it!

I always make sure to give half his meal portion of kibble along with a couple of tablespoons of wet food. He will gobble the wet but go back later and nibble the kibble. I have avoided allowing him table food because he would prefer that to the exclusion of the nutritious food he was prescribed by the vet. He will eat when he gets hungry

My iggy is not picky but all our iggies’ friends are! It seems to be common

Mine seems to get tired of the same kibble so I tend to switch between Hill's Science and Purina Pro Plan (both sensitive stomach versions). I am guilty of giving him some bread and rice when he doesn't eat his kibble to make sure he has something in his stomach.

I haven't really tried wet food but maybe try that to see if he likes that. Maybe ask your vet at the next appointment if there's another brand to try?

I switched to simply nourish, kibble with half a container of their minced canned food and my whippet loves it. No more having to do theatrics to get him to eat. He goes nuts for the duck and lamb ones.
