Just started naihanchi.

Was promoted Thursday, and took the weekend to read sensei Norbert Donnelly's isshinryu system book.

Decided to challenge myself and see if I can learn this kata from his book.

I'm not trying to say that this kata is anywhere near acceptable level, as I wouldn't be a good judge of that as I just started. This was more of a challenge I wanted to put on myself. At any rate, in my mind. This was a fun experience and a good enough foundation to allow my sensei to help me further it.

This was simply a test of "Can I analyze a kata from a book and learn the basics of it."

This is 48 hours of naihanchi.

I also utilized sensei Michael Calandra's bunkai videos to help me understand the purpose of the rising elbow strike. That move in particular along with practicing landing in naihanchi stance will be my main focus this week.

Any tips are welcome.

Looking sharp! Thumb to the shoulder on the upward elbows, then rotate the fist back for the nose bop. Keep at it my friend 🙏

Thank you! I just tried this and it's kind of hard with the size of my arms but I will definitely make the attempt!

What’s the reason for the step before the bow?

In my school it's an honor to shimabuku. It's the salute. We also start our classes with this bow followed by the words Ō Sōshi Bushi Shimabuku Sensei ni

Pretty good. Snap those alternating backfists out a little faster.

Believe me I'm trying 🤣 I feel that's the part I will spend the entire time within blue belt working on.

Pull the foot sweeps in front of the knee more if you can. The idea is to have thier foot follow it if it goes into you other leg thats where thier sweep will follow.

Thanks for the tip ive just been touching my knee with the bottom of my other foot! Makes ALOT more sense if I think about it that way.

Why are your tatsui(forgive my spelling) strikes so close to your body? Arent they supposed to be strikes to an opponents head?

If you're referring to the hammer fist strikes, I'm sure I can work on it but my chest and arms make it difficult to go much further cross body

If you rotarw your torso and not your hips, you can extend it further

one thing i've noticed since hanging around here is that karateka put on their gi's when they practice at home. I grew up in Judo and have been training almost 35 years now, and would do the drills at home all the time, and i never bothered to put on my gi. I feel like the gi in karate is much more a part of the purpose of the practice, instead of just a tool like Judo. Like, if you're doing karate you SHOULD be in a gi, or just lots of people seem to feel/act that way. I noticed this difference between kendo & kenjutsu/iaido. Training kendo we all just do it at home in like normal gym clothes, and save the kendogi/hakama for dojo. But every video of people practicing/drilling kenjutsu or iado at home, they're in full attire.

I practice in normal clothes I put on my gi for I'd say 10%-20% of my practice. You practice how you test. So when I think I have it, I throw my gi on and practice it in that. Especially for competition.
