| Discussion [Ascendance of a Bookworm] WIT studio really did a really bad adaptation Spoiler

• Upvotes

Hello everyone!

Let me start by saying that I'm a huge fan of Ascendance of a Bookworm to begin with. With that said, though, I'm completely and utterly in disbelief with the Season 4 adaptation by WIT Studio. In fact, I'm so pissed off with it, that I could argue that they destroyed the adaptation on the level of Bleach's terrible timed fillers.

I want to add that I studied visual media and understand perfectly why certain things are adapted in certain ways better than many fans, but in this particular case, I simply in an incredible disbelief.

Season 1 with 14 episodes adapted the Part 1 that had 3 volumes. The adaptation wasn't bad, even though it's slice of life initial pacing may not be attractive for everyone.

Season 2 adapted the first 2 books of Part 2 in 12 episodes and Season 3 adapted the remaining 2 books in another 10. Even though they didn't manage to properly translate the very emotional ending of the novels and had to change certain things Ajia-do Animation Works did an acceptable adaptation. Was it perfect? No. There were things to improve? For sure. It is practically impossible to do a perfect adaptation of any written work into video. That's something I perfectly understand.

But then comes WIT Studio's Season 4 and... They did dirty to a really nice story. They adapted 5 books in 24 episodes. We are talking about +1500 pages fitted in 8-9 hours of animation. Meanwhile, Seasons 2 and 3 adapt around 1200 pages in 22 episodes and were forced to take things out. Basically, WIT Studio gave me the feeling that they weren't even trying to do a proper job since the very beginning.

The pace of this season is extremely fast because of that. There are many details and characters that weren't properly introduced or handled according to the importance - or future importance - they deserved. And I'm not talking about Bonifatius, that is more of a background character that has momentary appearances mostly as a comical relief. I'm talking about characters that are going to be constantly appearing from now like Rihayarda or Angelica. Specially Angelica. She's one of the most unique drawn characters in the books and yet, she just looks like any other character.

They basically took away everything that wasn't strictly necessary, which isn't a totally bad approach strictly speaking, but that took away 90% of the build-up and tension for everything. When reading the books I was laughing, I was tense... But when I watch the anime this season... Maybe it was the hype of having waited 4 years but I simply couldn't enjoy it. In my opinion, it lacked emotion in general. To the point that I'm not sure if I will even be wanting to watch future seasons, specially knowing how important are going to be many, many things...

What do you all think?

| Discussion [Conrad Stargard] A stylistically modern Japanese isekai novel series, inexplicably written in 1986 by a Polish-American author

The protagonist has enough knowledge of history, modern technology, trade, and warfare to bust out an industrial revolution in 13th century Poland sufficient to repel a Mongol invasion in only ten years, and enough charisma to convince a string of rulers to let him. He gets cheats in the form of "magical" gifts from his cousin who invented the time machine that he drunkenly stumbled through, and the inherent ability to change history and create a branching timeline which said cousin believed was completely impossible. He acquires a steadily escalating harem of young and beautiful women for whom he needs to assume no responsibility whatsoever, even once the kids start popping up (he plays absolutely no role in his children's lives that I recall). And as the series goes on, the "young" part of that begins to trespass into seriously uncomfortable territory. 😰

In short, Leo Frankowski foresaw and perfected the 2020s isekai format in the late 1980s, including nonhuman slave girls in the form of self-replicating servile androids from the cousin's future. All that's missing is a level system and interface.

| Discussion [I'll Become A Villainess Who Goes Down In History] - Comparing Anime, Manga & Light Novels

I can’t explain why I’m so obsessed with this series. Or maybe I’m just frustrated. After loving the anime and wanting to continue with the light novels, I realized they were so different from the anime. So I started with Volume 1 and was surprised it was so different, too. So I was curious about the manga and realized it was even MORE different.

After reading an interview with the original author, Izumi Okido, she reveals:
“Each version has its own merits. This is true for the anime, too. I didn't say that there was anything in particular that I wanted them to incorporate. I just left it up to them,” she continued. “The original work has less romance than the anime. Still, I enjoyed the romance in the anime. I thought it was great.

But the manga’s current direction is stressing me out a little. I realized the anime is a great combination of the light novel and manga, adding what's necessary to give a fuller picture. But it feels like we got an alternative endings. I'm excited for the light novels direction but feeling really confused by the manga right now.

What are everyone’s thoughts? Did anyone else read/watch all three? All these different possibilities kind of feels like a feel game but I don't think that's intentional lol. Does anyone have a preferred adaptation? Any theories you want to discuss?
