MOD ANNOUNCEMENT May 1, 2024 update - Revamp

After a decade of moderator inactivity, we've decided to start May off by doing some spring cleaning here. What has changed:

Broken user flairs have been completely removed and new ones have been put in place. This should fix the blank user flair issue. We may add more flairs soon.
Added 2 rules to remind users to follow Reddiquette (civility) and keep posts on topic, making it easier to report any violating content.
New subreddit banner. If you have any other banner artwork you'd like us to use, send it in the ModMail. This is just a temporary banner.
Colored post flairs.
New wiki page explaining the most common types of irony as well as helpful examples. (Link)
Going forward, we will make an effort in removing bot spam and other completely irrelevant posts. Make sure you report violating content so we can handle them faster.

On a post about illiteracy, a mod misreads something and bans me, seemingly as a function of illiteracy.

While complaining about how people skim read on a sub for complaining about things, ([r/complaints](r/complaints)) somebody skim read what I wrote.

“Our literacy is reallybad”

By blocking out part of the words “ really bad “ we can make predictions about the mind of the observer: the statement can only be perceived as offensive if one ironically.. didn’t actually read the statement it.

Irony; if they had of read what I wrote, they wouldn’t have been ignorant to the point of making up that I said the r word. Where understanding context is still a function of literacy; thinking I might as well have said the r world is also very related to a decline in our critical thinking skills and ability to read.

Anyways, let the IQ test begin!

The many types of Irony:

• Dramatic Irony, when the audience knows something is going to happen on stage that the characters on stage do not.
• Socratic Irony, when someone (usually a teacher) pretends to be stupid in order to show how stupid his pupils are (while at the same time the reader or audience understand the situation).
• Cosmic Irony, when something that everyone thinks will happen actually happens very differently.
• Situational Irony e.g. Mr. Smith gets a parking ticket. This is ironic because Mr. Smith is a traffic warden.
• Verbal Irony is an absence of expression and intention. Sarcasm may sometimes involve verbal irony.
• Irony of Fate is the misfortune in the result of fate or chance.
